Published by Kreechur Kumfort Publishing (A0.833832). In the year 594 BC, as the city-state of Athens was spiraling into social and economic ruin, Solon was elected Chief Magistrate. From this position of power earned on the battlefield, Solon was able to institute reforms and a new manner of governance. At a time when a high percentage of the people were steeped in indentured servitude due to crushing debt owed to a small percentage of aristocrats, his reforms were in no way popular, however they paved the way towards modern day democracy. Solon: Lawgiver of Athens depicts Athens during this time as Solon comes to power. You will hear the great city-state of Athens, the senate in turmoil, Solon shouting down the din, speaking calmly and with measured reason, and eventually you will hear a move towards a major tonality of the themes as Solon’s reforms take hold and social and economic stability is once again established. This piece was written to commemorate the opening of the Solon Center for the Arts in 2017 and was first performed by Solon High School Band in Solon, IA.

Louise Farrenc (1804-1875) was the only woman to hold a professorship at a European Conservatory (Paris) in the 19th Century.  They would only allow her to teach piano, not composition, because she was undeniably a virtuoso pianist.  During her lifetime she mainly composed for piano, but also wrote works for the orchestra, including three symphonies, and a great deal of mixed chamber music. She wrote no works for wind band of any kind, yet she lived in a golden age of especially French band music. As such, I felt a new generation of music students should hear the music of this incredibly talented composer who had the misfortunate of being born female in the 19th Century. This work is certainly characteristic of the Romantic Era and would make a lovely concert overture. the main sub ject of her variations is Martin Luther's A Mighty Fortress is Our God. If you purchase this score (and like it), please write to me at debbaut@gmail.com, subject Farrenc and I will send you a copy of the wav file as well as a link to her original piano work (I;'ve not taken too many liberties). If you still like it, parts may be had for $100 via Venmo or personal check. Write to debbaut@gmail.com, subject Farrenc..

Published by HMS Music (A0.1435814). ___________________________With a nice minor mode sound and a propelling timpani line, TIDINGS OF JOY opens with God Rest Ye, Merry, harmonized in drone fashion, then features a soli middle section of Pat-a-Pan for which you audition the players who get to play this more difficult middle section (keeps your best players challenged!) while the rest of the band vocalize a single pitch on ahh. The piece then recaps with God Rest You Merry with a slightly fuller instrumentation and a simple flute obligato line.FEATURES: Melody opportunities for all wind parts; Multiple percussion parts give colorful sound; timpani provide bass ostinato; Students sing ahh on a single note - great for improving intonation!; Soli section in middle will motivate players to learn the part so they get to play the melody (keeps your better players challenged); Low brass parts are very simple.RANGES: C minor (3 flats). This musical setting of the Kyrie was written for choir by Italian composer Antonio Lotti, who spent his entire career at the famous St. Mark's Basilica in Venice.The adaptation of choir literature for use by wind players provides an ideal tool for teaching basic musicianship such as intonation, balance, and blend as well as the advanced techniques of phrasing, nuance of line, and accuracy of ensemble articulation. Because the work consists of only 4 voices, players can more readily hear and address individual, section, and ensemble problems.The score and each part is notated with the specific voice assignment (S = soprano, A = alto, T = tenor, B = bass). This allows the conductor to rehearse like groups by simply asking for all players with the alto line and so forth.
