Published by Bill Malcolm (A0.786177). I wrote these comic strip impressions some years ago to feature a contrabassoon I had just acquired. The market for such music is almost non-existent, so I re-arranged them for concert band. The comic strips were all once in the Los Angeles times but for various reasons got pulled. Program notes and a condensed score are included. If printed front to back all parts should come out with correct page turns (which accounts for some of the shameless advertising and blank pages I included make sure this happens). Playing times are 3:27, 2:50, and 2:37 respectively.

Published by Scott Custer Jr (A0.1153691). My first complete concert band piece. It's been in the works for about 3 months. The early drafts of this piece were written in April/May and were then left to collect dust for months. I wrote it to experiment with melodic/harmonic minor scales and did not intend to finish the piece. Around the same time I wrote the early drafts of the piece, my high school band director asked if I wanted to write a piece for the concert band. I agreed and spent months working on different pieces of music, completing none of them. Around late October I stumbled across this looking through old pieces of music for some new ideas. I listened through it 3 or 4 times and decided to continue the piece. After spending roughly two months finishing the draft, and another month revising and adding parts, I had finally finished Trapped. When I started working on this piece with the intention of finishing it, I was at a difficult point in my life. I had recently come home from my rookie season of drum corps and was still transitioning back to the real world. The freedom of tour had been taken away from me, I had mentally matured a lot during the summer. While only 17 I felt like I was stuck with a bunch of kids. I had spent all summer with friends much older than me, learning a lot from them and taking inspiration from them in many ways. When I started this piece, I was conflicted with many thoughts and emotions. I was still under the impression that my peers in the music program hated me because of some of my actions last year. The girl from home I had been talking with all summer while I was gone, and hoped to start a relationship with, lied to me while I was gone about many things, causing me to remove them from my life. The last year and a half have involved many events like losing my best friend of 5 years because of, what I consider, an overreaction on my part; being used for my kindness; lied to; having secrets about me revealed behind my back by those I trusted; being a therapy friend; constant overthinking; as well as toxic friendships I didn’t want to leave because I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I felt trapped. I had spent so long trying to improve myself to become who I am today, and I still felt like crap. Even though I knew and promised myself I wouldn’t follow through, I was battling suicidal thoughts and I was in a severely depressive episode of my life. I wrote this piece to express the feeling of overthinking, being trapped in your mind, and the road to recovery. The constant back-and-forth battles with yourself, unsure of where to go and what to do next; feeling trapped. I hope that this piece connects and resonates with those of you in a similar position to what I was in, and I promise there is a way out and that life does get better. And with that, I present to you, Trapped.

The composer writes : This work was premièred on April 27, 2003 at the Eglise Saint-Roch in Paris with the prestigious Orchestre de la Musique de L’Armée de L’Air, under the direction of my friend and colleague, Claude Picheraureau. I have always been fascinated by the beauty of the Cosmos, which has inspired many of my works. Feelings of infinite movement can be expressed musically and it seemed to me that one of the ways to do this was to end this work on a repeated phrase played in a long perdendosi, to give the impression that one is hearing the echoes of the finished phrase as the instruments stop playing. I had just started to write this work when I received a note for the Paris Observatory which gave me the news that the astronomical community had decided to name a newly discovered asteroid for Jean-Pierre Luminet. When I wrote to Jean-Pierre to congratulate him on this honour, reminding him with the Petit Prince that not everyone has their own star, I asked him if he would accept that I name this work for concert band with the full name of his asteroid: 5523 Luminet 1991 PH8. Jean-Pierre accepted my proposition by return letter : ..., not only do I not have any objection, but I would be very honoured. To be in the celestial spheres in the form of a rock and also in the form of music, what more could one ask for? The composer writes : This work was premièred on April 27, 2003 at the Eglise Saint-Roch in Paris with the prestigious Orchestre de la Musique de L’Armée de L’Air, under the direction of my friend and colleague, Claude Picheraureau. I have always been fascinated by the beauty of the Cosmos, which has inspired many of my works. Feelings of infinite movement can be expressed musically and it seemed to me that one of the ways to do this was to end this work on a repeated phrase played in a long perdendosi, to give the impression that one is hearing the echoes of the finished phrase as the instruments stop playing. I had just started to write this work when I received a note for the Paris Observatory which gave me the news that the astronomical community had decided to name a newly discovered asteroid for Jean-Pierre Luminet. When I wrote to Jean-Pierre to congratulate him on this honour, reminding him with the Petit Prince that not everyone has their own star, I asked him if he would accept that I name this work for concert band with the full name of his asteroid: 5523 Luminet 1991 PH8. Jean-Pierre accepted my proposition by return letter : ..., not only do I not have any objection, but I would be very honoured. To be in the celestial spheres in the form of a rock and also in the form of music, what more could one ask for? Spring Awakening is a new work for Concert Band that will challenge intermediate players with breath control, particularly the lower brass. My approach to titles is to listen to the piece once it is completed, and to simply meditate on what I hear, trying not to listen as an arranger or composer, but just as though I were an audience member at a concert, and then ask, what is the overall impression or feeling that it gives me. This piece seemed to speak to me of rebirth, hence the title.As with my other works for Concert Band, I have not created a bassoon part, but if you have a player, I would recommend they take the Euphonium part. My imagination runs wild contemplating what may be pictured in de Falla’s music. It certainly seems to be a civic gathering: perhaps a wedding, a baptism, a dedication, or a feast taking place in the civic square of perhaps on a hacienda. There are scenes that may be dancing, speeches, passionate sonnets, arguments, celebrations, all ending in a lingering mysterious question with a tinge of hopefulness. Whatever Falla may have have had in mind it is full of life, drama, and humanity.I first became aware of de Falla’s work, particularly Andaluza, in the summer of 2021 during an online orchestration seminar. Each of Cuatro Piezas’s movements expresses Spanish folk music idioms through an impressionistic lens reflecting Debussy’s influence on de Falla. Andaluza immediately struck me as music that would shine in the realm of the concert band. It was a joy to explore de Falla’s music, transforming the implications of the piano stylings into the nuances and colors available to the modern wind ensemble. It was just as much if not more challenging to develop this arrangement than creating my own original music typically proves to be. Usually on those flights I will work on music, sleep, listen to music, or watch a show on my phone. However, on this particular leg of a flight, I happened to spend a portion of the trip staring out the window (which is unusual for me as I am prone to bouts of vertigo for which I have series of techniques to stave it off) admiring the beautiful scenery unfolding in front of me. The opportunity to set this scene to music became a reality when Jim McAllister, director of bands at Lincoln Memorial University and one of my best friends in the world, approached me about a commission. I wrote him an expansive hypermetric piece (over 400 measures in one movement) that reflects my thoughts, feelings, and impressions as I admired the view from sky.Flying was commissioned by and is gratefully dedicated to the Lincoln Memorial University Band and its world class conductor, James McAllister.

Here at last is my ’’Elegy sentimentale’’ for Concert Band, and an original composition.I hope it makes an excellent piece for amateur and professional bands alike; with some challenging and interesting woodwind and brass writing for all.I envisage the ’’Elegy’’ eventually making a good piece of film music, and in consequence any directors or producers looking for a movie theme; please feel free to contact me!Elegy Sentimenatle is a mournful & melancholic work, suited for performances on the concert platform.A Supreme Work of Art!The Elegy Sentimentale opens impressively. Keith Terrett plants a C deep in virgin soil; orchestrated brilliantly for bassoon, harp and delineated by pizzicato double basses this bass line is a tree of a forest; and we are at once held by the strength of the roots. The tonality is immediately clear, and there is a grand feeling of space and power in the wide layout of the score. A lone solo clarinet high in the tessitura accompanied by a solo cello with a counter subject state the opening eight bar theme which embodies the seeds of two ideas, which supplies the generating force for the slightly agitated Piu Mosso which follows. The counter subject given by the solo cello at the beginning is now reiterated by the plaintive voice of a solo oboe and a third motif makes an appearance in the solo clarinet; oboe and clarinet duet beautifully over arpeggiated rhythmic impulses in the harp. A new subject of an accompanying nature, derived from all the material thus far presented now comes off at a tangent on the strings cascading downwards and accompanying woodwind who, play the chief melodic subject while horns cry in anguish. This first section is then repeated; I found the whole experience spiritual, detached and wondering, intensified by the breath-taking stillness. Mr Terrett in the middle section that follows now uses his full orchestral forces; after a key change the emotional charge that follows is cataclysmic in its cry of anguish; the main theme is stated in a full dress orchestral tutti, which is then repeated. The music ebbs and flows with slight variations in the woodwind recalling the main ideas; at the very end high strings bring consolation and finally peace. Keith Terrett shows an admirable command of orchestration and melodic construction and combines these qualities with rare imagination and insight.Gerald Manning

Its relatively flat topography and high elevation lead to intense winds and unpredictable storms bestowing the plateau's colorful moniker. Contrary to the title, the music reflects a compilation of impressions from multiple visits over a decade’s time, gathered with my son’s first-hand reports of overnight stays, rather than a single day’s experience. My original objective for the music was to portray the stark and stony landscape alternatively caressed and buffeted in a stew of breezes and gales, sunshine and storms. However, as I was writing the piece it became apparent the true theme of the music is rather a daily high-altitude drama pitting light versus darkness, a drama staged on the plateau’s rocks, meadows, streams, and lakes depicting a perpetually shifting kaleidoscope of distinctive lighting unlike any I have experienced elsewhere. The transparent, thin air reveals indigo blue skies and scalding-white clouds overarching stunning vistas stretching a hundred miles or more. The landscape glitters under the radiance of high latitude sunlight. The only word I can think of to describe the golden glow of sunbeams slicing through a summer snow squall is ethereal. The utter absence of artificial light makes for the darkest night skies and brightest stars one can experience on earth.
