Laflamme ©2012 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned. Isaiah 9:2* Humility seeks to draw attention to the Advent portion of the holiday season. This programmatic composition seeks to create an aural picture of the atmosphere both physically and spiritually in the eastern world B. C. and then try and connect it to Christmas traditions today. Students will really enjoyed rehearsing and performing this piece because of it’s programmatic nature, use of a plethora of percussion as well as some unusual uses of and combinations of instruments. Piccolo flute in the low register, soprano saxophone, open tom drums and oboe to create some Middle Eastern ambiance. Then, in order to create ‘the land of the shadow of death’ some unusual techniques call for whispers through instruments, french horns ringing their hands in and out of the bell, flutes playing on the head joints only, attaching a tenor saxophone mouthpiece to a euphonium and a baritone saxophone mouthpiece to a sousaphone. Add some trumpets and trombones playing only on their lead pipes and double reeds buzzing on just the reed and a haunting canvas to build the chaos of a world without salvation is created. Then, with the calming of the piano to present an extremely stark and hallow arrangement of the 7th century antiphon Veni Immanuel, ‘O Come, O Come Immanuel’ which crescendos to the coming of the savior at measure 128 precipitates the a highly antiphonal arrangement of ‘Joy to World.’ While this piece has some characteristics of ‘novelty band music’ there are plenty of technical demands that must be met in order to make it a legitimate concert band literature selection. *THE HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION®. Exploring slurs, accents, dynamics, caesuras, ritardandos and more, you'll be shocked by how sophisticated this beautiful piece sounds while using only a limited number of notes. Written to convey the playful innocence of a child dreaming, In Your Slumber balances the calm of a starry sky with the imagination and adventure of a child's mind at rest. Simple and elegant, the lullaby played by the flutes in the beginning gives way to an imaginative variation on the theme by the trumpets and clarinets at B. Gentle, pulsating tenutos in the harmonizing chords underneath are symbolic of relaxed, rhythmic breathing underlying the musical thoughts flowing by above them. Just as in dreams we seldom have control of which direction the story may go, D takes us somewhere else musically and implies a build to a false climax. At E, we are greeted with the quiet sounds of the night once more, but this time our imagination runs wild as the music builds to the climax of the piece at F. This powerful proclamation of the melody is concluded with a gentle final statement in the flute and clarinet, and the piece concludes with the final twinkle of the stars as the sun rises for a new day.Full of imagination, beauty and teachable moments throughout, I hope that you and your students can enjoy and appreciate this piece for it's simple beauty as I do. Onward!~Aaron FonziREHEARSAL NOTES:1. The clarinet part should be a very light drone creating atmosphere at the beginning- the same goes for the clarinet and saxophone at rehearsal E.2. It's easy to get too loud too soon in this piece, so remind your students to have patience. F is the climax of the piece, but many young students will want to play C as if it is. Similarly, be sure to balance the trumpet/ clarinet and the flute/ oboe/ bells at C so both lines come out evenly.3. Take your time in measure 48- we want to naturally fade away and pause before going on at rehearsal E. This increase and decrease in energy is a characterization of the ebb and flow of the piece.4. At F, there are 3 important parts that must be balanced: flute/oboe/bells; trumpet/clarinet; alto saxophone/horn. For best results, balance these 3 parts, and encourage the alto/horn line to play out a bit more than they think they need to. They are the new part which must be heard here.5. Have fun and use your imagination in terms of expressing the music- ask your students what it makes them think of and create a story to go along with it. Let this ultimately guide your interpretation. I am consistently impressed with the creative ideas my students come up with, so let them decide how the music should sound with their own stories. In your slumber, anything is possible!

Whether we are journeying to the mountains or driving to work, mother nature is always on display. Therefore, I believe mother nature symbolizes pleasure, pain, and despair. Having the opportunity to grow up in New England and now living in Maine, I have seen a WIDE variety of weather within just a period of 24 hours! While living on the West Coast I will never forget my drive on the 395 going north and seeing the Sierra Nevada mountains (to my left) tall and grand with snow covered mountain tops! To the right, you would see and feel the hot desert! Although the performers do not need to envision mountaintops or deserts you need to respect the different sections and moods of the piece and know that everything is changing around us, all the time. As musical artists, we can convey our life journeys through our individual sound as well as the ensemble; whether it’s through enjoying nature, life’s challenges, and celebrations! Enjoy making traditional sounds and nontraditional sounds with your instrument.

War, by its nature, claims the lives of those who enter it, and over the course of history, many have fallen in the service of their countries who have gone to war for one reason or another. Fanfare for the Fallen seeks to honor those who have fallen in service and conjure the image of them marching into their glorious afterlife. Christianity holds that there is no greater love than laying down one's life for another, and many cultures believe that dying in battle yields glory in the great beyond. So whether marching into heaven, Valhalla or some other bright light at the end of the tunnel, let this music provide the soundtrack of trumpeting angels and one last ticker tape parade as these warriors are welcomed into their eternal home.This is a piece of intermediate difficulty with a nice melody and a John Williams' Olympic Fanfare feel to it. While the trumpets soar in their high registers for the heralding sections, the range for the rest of the piece (and the rest of the band) stays mostly in the center of the instruments. While 32nd notes are found here and there, the tempo sitting at around 80 keeps their difficulty, as well as the 16th note woodwind runs, in check. George Willson has been an performer, composer, and conductor for thirty years in various mediums and ensembles.Mp3 provided is a midi extracted from the composition program.

Published by Stephen Davies (A0.891956).   CLARINET CONCERT CONCERTINO FOR WIND BAND I don’t normally enter long descriptions of my arrangements, nothing worse than seeing that little sign on the bottom right saying ‘see more’, however this piece has a rather interesting story that I’d like to share with you! It was maybe 8 or 9 years ago that I helped in the library of the Band Of The Guards Association, a group of musicians who were all members of the Household Division Bandsin London, that is to say the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish, Welsh, Life Guards and Blues & Royals bands, chiefly known the world over for Changing The Guard at Buckingham Palace and many other ceremonial occasions. The Band Of The Guards Association were privileged to rehearse at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the famous Chelsea Pensioners, renowned for their Redcoats and medals as veterans of the British Army. Our library of music for the band at the time was held in an air raid shelter deep in the cellars underneath the labyrinthine corridors of the old building built by Sir Christopher Wren back in the 1680’s. When I say ‘air raid shelter’, that is exactly what it was like! Can’t go into too much detail, but suffice it to say that it was like being transported back in time! But this is where the library was kept, complete with dusty shelves, blackout warnings, obsolete bulb replacements and tunnels to the Thames! The man in charge of the library was Mr.Gordon ‘Joe’ Stafford, former Solo Clarinet with HM Band Of The Welsh Guards (ret’d), a fine player of that instrument in his day, and revered as such even now. About 8 years ago, our ‘underground ‘ library was deemed a fire hazard, and we were ‘invited’ to move it elsewhere. As we had our practice room nearby in the Chelsea Hospital, we decided to relocate the whole library there, shelving being built and constructed by enthusiastic band members. Joe Stafford and myself were not particularly enthusiastic about this, but it had to be done. Having looked at the enormous amount of music to be moved, we thought about ditching some of the scores which would never be played again, for instance selections of musicals long forgotten, scores with multiple missing parts etc. Lots of that music went to local music organisations simply for sight reading purposes, and the more complete versions went to bands and orchestras to bolster their stock of scores. After the laborious sorting out in the air raid shelter, Joe and I had the unenviable task of discarding the scores and parts that were incomplete, defaced, or just basically useless. It was an arbitrary case of ‘keep or throw’, and at the time we were doing this, Joe was desperate for a pint in the bar! I agreed, and was anyway on my last batch of throwaways when I found a piece titled ‘Clarinet Concerto’, by A.E.Williams. Written in pencil, with ancient sellotape, and signed by all the people who played it many years ago, including the Soloist and composer, I thought that that should not be binned, so I kept it! Joe Stafford suggested that I should ‘get it out there’ , so I have. Incidentally it has a cracking Cadenza towards the end, it was a bit smudged in the original score, but I’ve filled in the gaps!! This would be an ideal addition to the band repertoire for Clarinet!

The left hand plays only the bass part most of the time, with the right hand part kept as simple as possible. These four-part arrangements use flexible instrumentation so that you can exercise considerable control over the instrumental voicing or use them for non-standard ensembles. You can also create interesting instrumental tone color by omitting groups of instruments. If the ensemble is large enough you could omit brass instruments in the quieter sections, or use a solo trumpet against a woodwind background. It Is Well With My Soul is a hymn penned by hymnist Horatio Spafford and composed by Philip Bliss. First published in Gospel Songs No. 2 by Ira Sankey and Bliss (1876), it is possibly the most influential and enduring in the Bliss repertoire and is often taken as a choral model, appearing in hymnals of a wide variety of Christian fellowships. Horatio Spafford's original lyrics are included below. The piece is marked AGGRESSIVE but intentionally does not have a tempo marking. I wrote it at 180 bpm but can be effective slightly below that but I would not attempt it much faster. This piece will greatly challenge ALL of your players. I'm sure that they, and your audience, will have an exhilarating experience performing this piece.Finally, someone is going to ask “What does ‘Metallic Khatru’ mean?†Nothing. I just liked the name.NOTE - This version requires that the score be printed with Legal size paper. The parts are printed in Letter size. In my experience, this was the most common for US groups to be able to print. - There is another version that has the score in Tabloid & Concert size if that fits your needs better. Here is a stunningly beautiful example of Renaissance polyphony and a mesmerizing fast-paced recital number. Program this initially to set an exciting mood or as an encore to leave the listeners in a jubilant afterglow. The parts are not tricky, but plan to rehearse the many subtleties of dynamic contrast between the various sub-groups and the overall articulations. Innovations First of all, Gabrieli preferred sacred vocal and, indeed, instrumental music. Hence, he concentrated on music that consequently took advantage of resonance and reverberation for maximum effect. Gabrieli may have invented dynamics – or was the first to indicate them, such as in his Sonata Pian’ e Forte. Consequently, he was also a pioneer in spatial techniques. He, therefore, developed and used very specific notation to indicate instrumentation. Gabrieli experimented with assembling massive instrumental forces into isolated groups separated by space. In this way, he consequently contributed heavily to the Baroque Concertato style. Polychoral Works Gabrieli probably used the layout of the San Marco church for his experiments. This is because he worked there as a musician and composer. Furthermore, the church had two choir lofts facing each other. He indeed used these to create striking spatial effects between instrumental forces. Indeed, many of his works are composed such that a choir or instrumental group could first be heard on one side, followed by a group response. Sometimes there was probably a third group near the main altar as well. Spatial Music Above all, Gabrieli studied carefully detailed groups of instruments and singers. Furthermore, it seems like he created precise directions for instrumentation in rather more than two groups. Because they could be appropriately situated, the instruments could consequently be heard with perfect clearness at distant locations. As a result, arrangements that seem bizarre on paper can, in contrast, sound perfectly in balance. First Works Finally, Gabrieli published his first motets and his uncle Andrea's compositions in Concerti (1587). These compositions furthermore indicate considerable usage of dialogue and echo effects. Consequently, here we see low and high choirs with the variance between their ranges indicated by instrumental accompaniment. Gabrieli’s later motets Sacrae Symphoniae (1597) seem to move away from close antiphony. In contrast, he moves towards not simply echoing the material but developing it by sequential choral entrances. Even more, he takes this procedure to the extreme in the Motet Omnes Gentes. Unlike earlier works, the instruments are an essential part of the presentation, only parts marked: Capella are supposed to be sung. Homophony Hence, after 1605, Gabrieli moves to a much more homophonic style. He writes sections purely for instruments – called Sinfonia – and smaller sections for vocal soloists, accompanied by a basso continuo.

The last of his Three German Dances was most likely composed for a ball in Vienna's Imperial Court, and like many artists today, Mozart took a just add sleigh bells approach to creating a wintry atmosphere. Sleigh rides were a popular winter pastime in Vienna during Mozart's time, and it is said that the composer wrote this piece to mimic the sensation of going up and down the snow-covered hills on an 18th century sleigh.

It was originally danced by four couples in square formation and was an important influence in the development of the square dance in the United States. In 1915, the First World War had been raging in Europe for a year, and many British composers and poets had turned to artistic means to mourn those who died in the trenches of across the Channel. Elgar orchestrated the work at that time. In 1925, London publisher W. Paxton published arrangements by C. Jenkins made for brass and reed band and for military band; however, these are now out of print and no longer available. In the fall of 2015, Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, asked me to make an arrangement of Rosemary for the Eighth Annual Concert of Premieres, a series Sturman had begun in 2008, commissioning new works by known composers, and commissioning new arrangements of pieces he felt were worthy works in the public domain that were no longer in print and/or were written for ensembles containing instruments no longer part of the standard modern band or orchestra. Innovations First of all, Gabrieli preferred sacred vocal and certainly instrumental music. Hence, he concentrated on music that consequently took advantage of resonance and likewise reverberation for maximum effect. Seems like Gabrieli may have invented dynamics – or was rather the first to indicate them such as in his Sonata Pian’ e Forte. Consequently, he was also a pioneer in spatial techniques. He therefore developed and used very specific notation to indicate instrumentation. Gabrieli experimented with assembling massive instrumental forces into isolated groups separated by space. In this way, he consequently contributed heavily to the Baroque Concertato style. Polychoral Works Gabrieli probably used the layout of the San Marco church for his experiments. This is because he worked there as a musician and composer. Furthermore, the church had two choir lofts facing each other. He certainly used these to create striking spatial effects between instrumental forces. Certainly, many of his works are composed such that a choir or instrumental group could first be heard on one side, then consequently followed by a response from the group on the other side. Sometimes there was probably a third group positioned near the main altar as well. Spatial Music Above all, Gabrieli studied carefully detailed groups of instruments and singers. Furthermore, it seems like he created precise directions for instrumentation in rather more than two groups. The instruments, because they could be appropriately situated, could consequently be heard with perfect clearness at distant locations. As a result, arrangements which seem bizarre on paper, can in contrast sound perfectly in-balance. First Works Finally, Gabrieli published his first motets along with his uncle Andrea's compositions in Concerti (1587). These compositions furthermore indicate considerable usage of dialogue and echo effects. Consequently, here we see low and high choirs with the variance between their ranges indicated by instrumental accompaniment. Seems like Gabrieli’s later motets Sacrae Symphoniae (1597) move away from close antiphony. In contrast, he moves towards not simply echoing the material, but developing it by sequential choral entrances. Even more, he takes this procedure to the extreme in the Motet Omnes Gentes. Unlike earlier works, here the instruments are certainly an essential part of the presentation. Also, only parts marked: Capella are supposed to be sung. Homophony Hence, after 1605, Gabrieli moves to a much more homophonic style. He writes sections purely for instruments – which calls Sinfonia – and smaller sections for vocal soloists, accompanied by a basso continuo.

It may be performed in a number of different ways; each issue or series may be performed separately or, the entire work, consisting of twelve issues and a Prologue, may be performed as a whole. In its entirety, the running time of Strange Myths and Wondrous Images is approximately forty-five minutes. Each issue represents an element: either an archetype, place, or an emotion, commonly found in comic book stories. As a whole, Strange Myths and Wondrous Images tells a particular story arc, one that is intentionally void of specific details, inviting the listener to imagine the particulars. Each series also contains its own sub-plot and emotional progression, while the formal structure suggests the traditional symphonic form. ​ Each issue has a duration of three to four minutes, limited to a small, but intensely expressive amount of thematic material. The challenge inherent in this limitation was to create enough contrast, yet not so much as to require more time to resolve it, therefore, each issue is self-contained. Published by Drennan Music Publications (A0.921039). This one was requested by a student a few years ago and it turned into my Concert Band’s favorite piece that year. A few things about this piece. First thing is that I had a large number of solid Alto Saxophone players when I arranged this. So there are two Alto Saxophone parts that are fairly even in skill level. Second thing is that there are a few punches that I pulled and a few I did not when it comes to simplifying the original piece for beginners. The triplet at the end of the main melody I changed to two eighth notes, and the Clarinets stay under the break. I left the accidentals as is, so there are Câ™s and a few others that are challenging. The harmonies in the B section of the main melody were left as is, as well as the rhythm in measures 41 to 47.

The program note that appears in the original printed score is noted here:There is a wedding feast in progress in the village inn, with music, dancing, carousing. Mephistopheles and Faust pass by, and Mephistopheles induces Faust to enter and take part in the festivities. Mephistopheles snatches the fiddle from the hands of a lethargic fiddler and draws from it indescribably seductive and intoxicating strains. The amorous Faust whirls about with a full-blooded village beauty in a wild dance; they waltz in mad abandon out of the room, into the open, away into the woods. The sounds of the fiddle grow softer and softer, and the nightingale warbled his love-laden song. Mephisto Waltz No. 1 is paired with a work preceding it, Midnight Procession (Der Nächtliche Zug), however this piece is not as widely performed. Liszt later transcribed the waltz into a piano duet and a virtuosic solo piano work. Each of these versions were written around the same time, roughly 1859-62. The orchestral version also has an alternate ending, which is softer and fades away. This arrangement features both endings. This work was then followed by three more Mephisto Waltzes. No. 2 was also written as both an orchestral and piano work, while Nos. 3 and 4 were for piano only. Of the four, the first is the most popular, although the third is also praised as highly musically.
