The journey across the Wild West was full of hardship, peril, and loss This song battles the very real struggles with levity and humor. It was first published in 1858.“Git Along, Little Dogies†is a cowboy ballad, also known as “Whoopie Ti Yi Yoâ€. While likely older, the first mention of the song was in author Owen Wister’s 1893 journal. It was first published in 1910. “Dogies†is a reference to small or orphaned calves. The narrative of the song quotes a cowboy singing to the slow or stray dogies as they move along the cattle drive to Wyoming.“Rock Island Line†refers the Rock Island and La Salle Railroad company (established 1947) which soon after became the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad. When construction of the railroad arrived at Rock Island in 1854, it became the first to connect Chicago with the Mississippi River. This folk song references an encounter between an operator of a toll gate and a train engineer who is let through without paying by lying about his payload. Sometimes the composer may point us to the meaning of a piece, without actually providing it. Says Daniel Burwasser: “Catching Fireflies is an ode to the tender memories and joys of childhood. The thematic material and structure of the work reflects the immediacy and innocent fascination of a time when everything is new and exciting, and something as simple as the flashing of a firefly can capture the imagination. The opening indeed creates visions of sprightly fireflies. An animated seven-note figure, first introduced by the strings then taken up by the brass and woodwinds, suggests a dazzling nocturnal scene of children scurrying after the elusive insects. The theme rapidly transmogrifies, aided by echoing dialogues between instruments as well as abrupt percussive effects. Then, a placid lyrical interlude begins with contemplative strains. Have the catchers settled back to view the stars? Like youth itself, the segment doesn’t last and is pushed aside by a subdued version of the lead theme. This time, a lyrical melody pro- vides a whiff of melancholia, but one limned by kaleidoscopic xylophone notes. Then, a longer adagio theme develops, and while it reflects the original lyrical interlude, it soon assumes a nostalgic aura reminiscent of fifties film music. Perhaps it evokes the romantic theme from an old movie the composer attended as a youth. But the night is not over and as the tempo increases, the brass sounds a variation of the opening melody, there is a brief parenthesis of calm, then a crashing tutti puts an end to the evening activities.

The march’s ragtime-like rhythms, percussive punctuation, and bouncy tone all reflect the syncopated gaits, quick stops, and half runs that get Beacon Street pedestrians where they need to go. It all culminates in a festive final strain, mirroring the Boston Marathon which runs down Beacon Street every year.Premiered by the Boston University Concert Band, April 2024.

This arrangement of Never Enough is for concert band with an optional vocal soloist.The work starts out with the simple piano arpeggios that really hooked my ear on the original, before leading into an intimate blend of woodwind timbres and flowing percussive melodies for the first verse. Low Brass lead the work into the first chorus, where a Horn solo carries the emotion to the first full ensemble hit that pushes through until the end of the work where sudden silence and soft, warm extended chord punctuates the piece.This piece was written with advanced high school and higher level musicians in mind. Though the pieces isn't incredibly difficult overall, the range asked of some of the performers and the raw emotion that this work represents demands a level of training. Krebs Trio ♫ for Concert Band with Flexible Instrumentation ♫ by Johann Ludwig Krebs (1713-1780) ♫ arranged by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ Johann Krebs was the son of a well-known organist. Krebs studied organ and composition with JS Bach and was highly commended by him. He was one of the most technically gifted young organists of his day, yet was never employed by a major church. Krebs held modest positions all of his life and he and his family of seven children struggled with poverty. ♫ Although underpaid according to his ability and training, Krebs produced a large body of work – 193 known scores. His compositions are judged to be of prime quality, superior enough for scholars to argue whether a piece was composed by him or Bach. His Toccata and Fugue in E for organ is counted one of the masterpieces in Baroque literature. His 2 concertos for lute show that he must have been an accomplished lute player. Krebs was born, studied, lived, & composed in or near Upper Saxony (much like Bach). ♫ Teaching band in a small school, I often needed flexible instrumentation to assure satisfaction for students when a full complement of instruments was not available. This Baroque work from pipe organ literature has been scored for 3 independent polyphonic voices plus an optional percussion part. This piece can be played with almost any combination of instruments or as a trio or quartet. I added an optional hand drum part so percussionists can also participate. Krebs Trio has been performed by my mid level band and a quintet of music educators at a school music benefit concert, and the fanfa at North Haiti Music Camp. ♫ Purchase price includes permission is granted to make photocopies of parts additional scores for a medium size school band.
