An original work of mine entitled ''Gettin' Bluesy'' written for young concert band. Composed in a bluesy style with flattened 3rds & 7ths evident in the melody, this is a lovely piece with which to calm the atmosphere; and an excellent way to introduce a bluesy piece to your band members. The mood is melancholy, I did compose this after my cat sadly passed away when I was living in Norway. The melody is passed around the ensemble, akin to the conversational style one can observe in a Haydn string quartet. The brass have the opportunity for some transparent and soft muted work behind the melody scored in the woodwind. The bass guitar can be replaced with a double bass if desired. Your percussionists get the opportunity to play kit and also the vibes are used, a great work out all round! Whether we are journeying to the mountains or driving to work, mother nature is always on display. Therefore, I believe mother nature symbolizes pleasure, pain, and despair. Having the opportunity to grow up in New England and now living in Maine, I have seen a WIDE variety of weather within just a period of 24 hours! While living on the West Coast I will never forget my drive on the 395 going north and seeing the Sierra Nevada mountains (to my left) tall and grand with snow covered mountain tops! To the right, you would see and feel the hot desert! Although the performers do not need to envision mountaintops or deserts you need to respect the different sections and moods of the piece and know that everything is changing around us, all the time. As musical artists, we can convey our life journeys through our individual sound as well as the ensemble; whether it’s through enjoying nature, life’s challenges, and celebrations! Enjoy making traditional sounds and nontraditional sounds with your instrument.

It’s probably all you’ll ever need for thanksgiving and harvest festivals and the arrangements can be used for virtually any combination of wind instruments. This is an essential title for any band library or for any ensembles that are called upon to provide music for schools or churches. There’s also an optional but useful simplified keyboard part intended for less experienced keyboard players. The left hand plays only the bass part most of the time, with the right hand part kept as simple as possible. The piano part too means that you can use the arrangements as solos, duets or trios. I was commissioned by Bill Park of the North Roy-alton Community Band of North Royalton Ohio in early 2011. He wanted me to write a piece similar to one that contained familiar tunes from the Looney Toons cartoons of Warner Brothers that would sound like music used by the Little Rascals and Laurel & Hardy movies of the early 1930s. If you have ever seen these old movies you will notice that the music in the soundtrack never did coincide with what was happening on the screen (with the exception of a funny or romantic moment or a chase scene). It is as if you were watching a movie in your living room and some-body in the next room was playing his stereo just loud enough for you to notice the music. Well thats how I wrote Rascals! trying to keep Mr. Shields writing style intact while integrating my own style without covering him up. Rascals! was premiered by the North Royalton Community Band in their hometown in May 2011 and was well received by both the band and the audience.

It was released as the third single from their third studio album, Love (1987). Released as a single in 1988, the track peaked at number three on the UK Singles Chart and became a top-40 hit in Australia and Ireland. Songwriter Roddy Frame said in 2014 that the song has been great for him, but at the time of creating the album, the song was not in keeping with the other songs. Around this time, Frame had become somewhat of a recluse, living in a remote wooden shack in Hollywood, Marple Bridge, in the hills above Manchester, going through periods of good and bad mental health, while continuing to write music, including the lyric from Westwood to Hollywood in the song. The distinctive saxophone sound is retained and towards the end is an opportunity for your star alto and tenor to solo or battle, to close out the song in the way that it is often performed live by Aztec Camera. The song is featured prominently in the 2019 film '47 Meters Down: Uncaged' and the 2020 Netflix series 'I Am Not Okay with This'.

The first snowfall of the year with its cold air and clear skies always is impressive and an attention getter. Imagine standing on top of a ski slope or snow board run covered in fresh snow and you are about to start that first exhilerating downhill ride. The air is clean and crisp and the slope is challenging with twists and turns that are both rhythmic and technical. This work has a few. The time signature changes with fun technical scale passages during the 3/4+ 4/4 section should glue together rather effortlessly with consistent percussion. When I was four years old my family lived in Oregon and our family would go camping with several other families at Shasta Lake in California. Some of the most vivid memories I have from those trips involve riding in our boat (we named it Whoops Wow). I remember riding on the bow of the boat and finding that to be a thrilling and slightly terrifying experience at the time. I gave myself the task of telling the story of this experience through music for concert band. I sincerely hope you enjoy reliving this experience with me. Shane Vickery.
