The show won Best Musical, Book, and Score at the 2004 Tony Awards. The musical premiered Off-Broadway in 2003 at the Vineyard Theatre, co-produced by the Vineyard Theatre and The New Group. In July of that same year, the show moved to the John Golden Theatre on Broadway, where it ran until 2009, playing for over 2,500 performances. “There is Life Outside Your Apartment†is a fan favorite song from the second act of the musical, and it has been re-orchestrated for full concert band while still preserving the playful style and authentic musicality from the original. With the use of an Acme Mouth Siren and a large titanium panel (or sheet metal that can be whacked by a mallet), percussionists can recreate the “city†sound effects that were featured in the original musical production and the use of alternative playing techniques and mutes in the brass contributes to the playful atmosphere. This makes a great addition to a community or high school band pops concert! Morning Star Serenade expresses  a variety of emotions, displayed as an assortment of variations on a theme. It could be called a tone poem with lots of motion, including an assortment of chord progession settings that make the themes into a kaleidescope of musical colors. There are also some fugal treatments of the theme, including an inverted motif. It's an advanced intermediate piece owing to the number of accidentals, dynamic changes and the counterpoint type movement in the instrument sections. Student slinks back, starts playing cowbell again, but quietly this time. Playing gradually picks up intensity, and player starts again toward the front in measure 41, reaching the front by measure 48. In measure 48, either A) Conductor waves hands violently for student to stop, or B) have a couple of students place a large blanket over the cowbell player. This works, but only for one measure (player quits and doesn't move in bar 49). Cowbell player resumes playing with a vengeance in measure 50 (either in spite of the teacher or under the blanket!). But I also had a number of players who could move faster and play more challenging rhythms and notes than others. What to do? How about a simple arrangement with flexible part assignments?JINGLE THOSE BELLS! is a super-easy setting of Jingle Bells. The work opens with the traditional unison rendition of the melody, as found in almost every beginner band method book ever written. But then, after a brief pause, the melody is repeated, but now faster and with the addition of a bass line and rhythmic accompaniment. The rhythmic accompaniment is provided by several of your best clarinet, sax, and trumpet players who play the Advanced Part. And if you are short on bass voice instruments, you can utilize the optional bass parts for Alto Sax. My imagination runs wild contemplating what may be pictured in de Falla’s music. It certainly seems to be a civic gathering: perhaps a wedding, a baptism, a dedication, or a feast taking place in the civic square of perhaps on a hacienda. There are scenes that may be dancing, speeches, passionate sonnets, arguments, celebrations, all ending in a lingering mysterious question with a tinge of hopefulness. Whatever Falla may have have had in mind it is full of life, drama, and humanity.I first became aware of de Falla’s work, particularly Andaluza, in the summer of 2021 during an online orchestration seminar. Each of Cuatro Piezas’s movements expresses Spanish folk music idioms through an impressionistic lens reflecting Debussy’s influence on de Falla. Andaluza immediately struck me as music that would shine in the realm of the concert band. It was a joy to explore de Falla’s music, transforming the implications of the piano stylings into the nuances and colors available to the modern wind ensemble. It was just as much if not more challenging to develop this arrangement than creating my own original music typically proves to be. Composed in honor of women's history month, First Symphony for Beginning Band is a unique piece that depicts four important women throughout our history. Movement 1 depicts the harrowing tale of Sojourner Truth's escape from slavery. She went on to become one of the most influential abolitionists in history- both an icon for racial justice and women's rights.The second movement depicts the innocence of a young Malala, who stood up against the Taliban's exclusion of women's rights to education. At the age of 15, she was shot in the head three times on a school bus as she was on her way home. Miraculously, she survived and went on to win a Nobel Peace Prize (she is the youngest person to ever earn this prestigious award. Still alive today, Malala is currently studying at Oxford and runs the Malala Fund, which advocates for quality education for all girls. Movement 3 captures the energy, cunning and adventurous nature of Amelia Earhart. She was the first woman to fly the Atlantic, and her disappearance is one of the greatest mysteries of our time. Rehearsal D represents her flight over the open seas and Rehearsal E depicts the unresolved tragedy of her disappearance. Finally, the 4th movement honors the only person to win Nobel Prizes in two separate sciences, Marie Curie. Her scientific, methodical approach to exploration and discovery are depicted here via the fragmented eighth note motifs and methodical percussion writing. I hope your students will enjoy the catchy hooks and melodies, and I hope that this piece can serve as a valuable reminder of the infinite capacity of the human spirit. It's a Saturday morning. After a busy and hectic week, you have nothing scheduled. Your wife and kids are happily occupied with things that don't involve you. Time to mentally check out, retreat to the man cave and find something to do that doesn't involve anything other than what is physically in front of you. On the radio in the background, there are some old blokes musing laconically about football. You don't really know what you'll be doing, but it will involve tools and not giving a flip about anything else for a little while. You may even need to make a trip to the hardware store at some stage... who knows? Tooling-a-Round is the first movement of what is (planned to be) a multi-movement work for concert band, depicting the cherished role of backyard shed in the life of a typical suburban middle-aged family man. Quavers are to be played rhythmically swung, with articulations observed whole-heatedly to highlight the playful and irreverent mood throughout - staccato markings in particular are to be exaggerated. The sound of real tools should be used in the percussion parts where indicated (e.g. saw, file, hammer, toolbox, circular saw, power drill etc.) with rhythms to be approximated in order to give the impression of a project getting underway as the piece progresses and the protagonist meanders from one task to the next.This piece is dedicated to busy fathers who work hard to preserve their capacity to create, play and explore.

The 5 bar phrase Orchestra version begins with Bassoon and Viola playing a haunting melody that is joined by Tuba and Double Bass for 5 bars then Alto Sax and Viola join followed by Bass Clarinet and Trombone and eventually builds to include 26 Wind, String and Brass instruments as they make their individual entrances symbolizing many evening stars. As each new star appears every 5th bar until the eyes of the skies drench the night with light.  Wrapping up the Fugue is a 4 Octave trumpet solo line that explodes onto the scene and pulls you uncontrollably into the Bolero. This wonderfully melodic dance is rich in authentic character and attitude augmented by the entire orchestra with lines and elements that support the simple, yearning, lifting lines for the soloist. El Festiva is the reward for being a great listener! This tropical up-tempo 3rd movement lives up to its title. Rhythms and lines that push and pull your creative ear to a fun, party place… a Festival!

The four movements, Learning to Climb, The Intrepid Explorer, Rondo for a Lost Kitten, Rescued, were inspired by the delightful poem, A Kitten's Adventure, by Australian writer Linda Johnston. Rhythms are straightforward and readable by most students at elementary level. Second parts for flute, clarinet, trumpet and alto sax are suitable for quite junior players, but are not essential to the work. Parts for less common instruments are provided, but not essential. The bass is covered in trombone, baritone and tenor sax parts, in case tuba is not available. Percussion parts can be played on whatever instruments are available. The style of the work is descriptive and classically based, and would make an effective contrast to your band's usual repertoire.
