Includes a full score and set of parts.In Greek mythology the Titans were a powerful race that ruled the world before the Olympians. They were immortal giants of incredible strength and knowledge. According to mythology, a generation of younger Titans (Zeus, Hades, Poseidon, Hora, Hestia and Demeter) rebelled against their elders (Cronus and his followers) in a 10-year war. In the piece we hear the clashing of giant hammers forging weapons for that war. We also hear echoes of the ancient gods, Uranus and Gaea, and finally the martial beat of the rebellious Titans marching into cataclysmic battle. Musically, this piece is based on three ideas. A dynamic theme of chaos and instability reflects the conflict between the two generations of Titans. A more serene and melodic tune, the second idea, reflects the ordered and serene rule of the older Titans. The third idea is that even small actions often have far-reaching implications. This is musically represented by solo instruments that create ripples and echoes throughout the band.

Steinberg (A0.870387). This work commemorates the founding and settlement of the western United States. The piece consists of a number of musical episodes that evoke key historic milestones that took place as the west developed and grew over time. The work opens with a fanfare tribute to the mountains and valleys that were first seen by those arriving there. The fanfare starts out majestically and leads into a chorale tune that evokes the calmness of the river and the greenery around it. The clock then moves to a later time when the area was settled by bands of Indian tribes, dwellings and villages. This then melds into tribal life along the river and growth of the Indian culture. Suddenly, the sound of Indian raiding tribes is heard. This then settles down and Pioneer Wagon Trains are heard heading west, their wheels stumbling through mud and rock. In comes the U.S. Calvary. Trumpet calls are heard as the Calvary advances and eventually overcome the Indians, pushing them out of the west. The choral tune heard earlier is brought back which then leads to the sounds of the first trains heading west. As more and more trains arrive, the sound of towns and cities sprouting up is heard. At this point, the music gains momentum as more and more settlers arrive. Dance hall music can suddenly be heard followed by a segment that evokes the building of farms and raising of livestock. The music picks up into the 20th century culminating in a grand return of the opening River Valley fanfare heard at the start of the piece. A popular piece that resonates well with audiences bringing them a spirit of renewal and hope that they will find most uplifting.

“Shepherds’ Rocking Carol” is a traditional Czechoslovakian folk tune (“Hajej, nynej, Jezisku”) with lyrics loosely translated by the Anglican clergyman, Percy Dearmer. With Ralph Vaughan Williams, Dearmer was co-editor of The English Hymnal (1906) as well as The Oxford Book of Carols (1928), in which his translation, “Little Jesus, Sweetly Sleep,” appears with the Czech tune.<br> <br> This arrangement for young/developing band is an ideal vehicle for the budding oboist, featuring the oboe on melody in the first presentation of the tune and recapitulating at the work’s end. (A clarinet solo / substitute for oboe part is provided.)<br> <br> Although conservative in range and technical demands, “Shepherds’ Rocking Carol” incorporates a variety of instrumental, dynamic, and harmonic contrasts that make it both simple and elegant, and ideal for developing musicianship in every section of the band.

In this way, he consequently contributed heavily to the Baroque Concertato style. Polychoral Works Gabrieli probably used the layout of the San Marco church for his experiments. This is because he worked there as a musician and composer. Furthermore, the church had two choir lofts facing each other. He certainly used these to create striking spatial effects between instrumental forces. Certainly, many of his works are composed such that a choir or instrumental group could first be heard on one side, then consequently followed by a response from the group on the other side. Sometimes there was probably a third group positioned near the main altar as well. Spatial Music Above all, Gabrieli studied carefully detailed groups of instruments and singers. Furthermore, it seems like he created precise directions for instrumentation in rather than two groups. The instruments, because they could be appropriately situated, could consequently be heard with perfect clearness at distant locations. As a result, arrangements that seem bizarre on paper, can in contrast sound perfectly in balance. First Works Finally, Gabrieli published his first motets along with his uncle Andrea's compositions in Concerti (1587). These compositions furthermore indicate considerable usage of dialogue and echo effects. Consequently, here we see low and high choirs with the variance between their ranges indicated by instrumental accompaniment. Seems like Gabrieli’s later motets Sacrae Symphoniae (1597) move away from close antiphony. In contrast, he moves towards not simply echoing the material, but developing it through sequential choral entrances. Even more, he takes this procedure to the extreme in the Motet Omnes Gentes. Unlike earlier works, here the instruments are certainly an essential part of the presentation. Also, only parts marked: Capella are supposed to be sung. Consequently, here we see low and high choirs with the variance between their ranges indicated by instrumental accompaniment. Gabrieli’s later motets Sacrae Symphoniae (1597) seem to move away from close antiphony. In contrast, he moves towards not simply echoing the material but developing it by sequential choral entrances. Even more, he takes this procedure to the extreme in the Motet Omnes Gentes. Unlike earlier works, the instruments are an essential part of the presentation, only parts marked: Capella are supposed to be sung. Homophony Hence, after 1605, Gabrieli moves to a much more homophonic style. He writes sections purely for instruments – called Sinfonia – and smaller sections for vocal soloists, accompanied by a basso continuo.

Not overly difficult but players should be around Grade 5 (ABRSM) and intermediate level concert bands, school bands and symphonic wind ensembles should manage it easily. Inspired by an old ruined church in my town called the 'Cross Kirk' during the times of the Cromwellian invasion of Scotland.Part 1 It is around the year 1650. A novice monk awakes from his slumber to the echoes of prayers and holy chanting coming through the cloisters. After he rises, he readies the oxen for a trek down the St. Andrews Road to the nearby satellite site of the priory - the site of the modern day St Andrew's cemetery.Part 2 It is an arduous trek over a muddy, rocky, unprepared track with heavy carts, with oxen straining to pull the load. They stop for a breather (3:09) and the impressive vistas are observed and the flag at 'Auld Neidpath' is just visible, reflected in the noble theme between the arduous oxen trekking theme.Part 3 The caravan starts to speed up; the oxen being startled by the sounds of fanfare trumpets coming from behind - a brave group of knights have broken through English lines and speed towards Neidpath to reinforce the besieged occupants. As they pass the wagon train, the fanfares get louder until the party reach the head of the train where the lead Knight halts to show piety to the Hieromonk who blesses him and his knights. The novice looks on awe-inspired at the brave knights, with noble faces, resplendent in shining armour, with banners flapping in the wind. No time to stop! The knights remount and continue on, the fanfares trailing off into the distance. The wagon train slows down having reached its destination.Part 4 The novice is back at the priory, reflecting on seeing knights for the first time (receiving their blessing); their nobility and bravery impressed upon him and retires to his cell for the evening, the evening prayers and chants again echoing through the cloisters . As he closes his eyes, his mind returns to the knights and a smile crosses his face as he gently drifts off to sleep, as the final bell of the day tolls.

Published by Allan Nimmo Gilliland (A0.987813). The word Kalla is Norwegian for call, a theme that appears both in the inspiration for this piece and the structure of the work itself. Commissioned by the 2009 National Youth Band of Canada and funded through a grant from MacEwan University’s Centre for the Arts Research and Scholarly Activity Fund, the work was premiered May 13, 2009 by the National Youth Band of Canada under the direction of Dr. Shelley Jagow, featuring Dean McNeill as the soloist. For me Kalla is a crossover piece stylistically for the soloist. It draws upon both classical and jazz inspired techniques including traditional cadenzas with virtuosic runs and triple tonguing and contrasting sections featuring jazz plunger techniques, a unique sound not often heard in band music. The trumpet culture at turn of the century (late 19th century-early 20th century) in New Orleans was the inspiration for Kalla. Trumpet players would go down to the river and play a note to see how long it took the echo to come back. Soon, another trumpet would answer, higher and louder, and the game of one-upsmanship would begin. Trumpet calls and answers from across the city would sound. Kalla is based on this concept of call and response with the opening trumpet call coming physically from three different places in the concert hall. As the piece develops call and response continues between the soloist and ensemble.
