Colin Kirkpatrick’s National Anthems Express ESTONIA: Mu Isamaa This quick and easy national anthem arrangement is essential for traveling musicians, bands, instrumental groups and both amateur and professional ensembles. You can play it with any virtually any combination of instruments: symphonic band, clarinet choir, brass ensemble, brass band, solos, duets and trios - almost anything! This arrangement is in six independent parts each transposed into a variety of keys. For the most satisfying sound you’ll need to get a good balance between each part possibly with an emphasis on the melodic line. If you have a non-standard ensemble, you can pick 'n' mix as required. The piano reduction can fill missing parts or can be used as the basis for an accompaniment. Note that this anthem is virtually identical to the anthem of Finland. There is a minor difference in part of the melody and the repeat structure is different. This arrangement consists of a two-page score with seven instrumental staves and three percussion staves. The following parts are printed on separate pages. The score and all the parts are contained in the same pdf file. Part 1 in B flat (clarinet, trumpet, cornet, flugelhorn, soprano sax); Part 1 in C (flute, oboe, piccolo, glockenspiel, violin); Part 1 in E flat (alto sax, E flat clarinet); Part 1a in C (octave above concert for flute, piccolo, oboe, violin) and Part 1a in E flat (E flat cornet in brass band). Part 2 in B flat (clarinet, trumpet, cornet, flugelhorn, soprano sax); Part 2 in C (violin); Part 2 in E flat (alto sax); Part 2a in C (octave above concert pitch for flute, oboe, violin); Part 2a in B flat for clarinets; Part 2a in E flat (minor 3rd below concert for E flat alto clarinet). Part 3 in B flat (tenor saxophone, B flat baritone); Part 3 in C (bass clef for trombone, bassoon); Part 3 in C alto (alto clef for viola); Part 3 in E flat (tenor horn, alto sax); Part 3 in F (French horn); Part 3a in B flat (8ve below concert for 3rd clarinets in band). Part 4 in B flat (tenor sax, baritone); Part 4 in C (bass clef for trombone, euphonium, bassoon, cello); Part 4 in E flat (tenor horn, alto sax); Part 4 in F (French horn). Part 5 in B flat (baritone); Part 5 in C (bass clef for trombone, euphonium, bassoon. Part 6 in B flat (B flat bass, bass clarinet); Part 6 in C (bass clef for bass trombone, bassoon, contrabassoon, tuba, double bass); Part 6 in E flat (E flat bass, baritone sax). There’s also a part for timpani, percussion (3 players) and a piano reduction. The arranger, Colin Kirkpatrick studied at London’s Royal College of Music and followed a career in music education. He was a High School Music Director for about fifteen years and later became a Music Education Adviser, with the added responsibility for training teachers and directing the instrumental teaching service. He has published a great deal of music and his publishers include Boosey & Hawkes, Novello, Paxton, Schott, Oxford University Press, Chester, Belwin Mills and Intrada (Netherlands). His music has been performed and broadcast all over Europe as well as in Japan, Thailand, Australia and the USA.

One of our favorite songs that he sang was TheFar North Land. Several years ago, my sister recorded our father singing this song for use on the soundtrack of one of hermovies. Years later I transcribed the song from that recording and used it as the foundation for this piece. My aunts tell methey recall my father singing this song when he was a boy growing up in Minnesota, and that they referred to it as Fletch'ssong. It was only while working on this piece that I discovered that Duncan, Clear Water and Bear Skin are actual lakes inthe border lakes region where Minnesota meets Canada.The original arrangement, for string quartet, was premiered by the OdeonQuartet on October 21, 2003, at Seattle's TownHall.

Years later I transcribed the song from that recording and used it as the foundation for this piece. It was released as the third single from their third studio album, Love (1987). Released as a single in 1988, the track peaked at number three on the UK Singles Chart and became a top-40 hit in Australia and Ireland. Songwriter Roddy Frame said in 2014 that the song has been great for him, but at the time of creating the album, the song was not in keeping with the other songs. Around this time, Frame had become somewhat of a recluse, living in a remote wooden shack in Hollywood, Marple Bridge, in the hills above Manchester, going through periods of good and bad mental health, while continuing to write music, including the lyric from Westwood to Hollywood in the song. The distinctive saxophone sound is retained and towards the end is an opportunity for your star alto and tenor to solo or battle, to close out the song in the way that it is often performed live by Aztec Camera. My Funny Valentine was written for the 1937 Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart coming of age musical 'Babes in Arms'. The song became a popular jazz standard, appearing on over 1300 albums performed by over 600 artists. One of them was Chet Baker, for whom it became his signature song; in 2015 the Gerry Mulligan quartet's 1953 version of the song (featuring Chet Baker) was inducted into the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry for its cultural, artistic and/or historical significance to American society and the nation’s audio legacy. The description of the male character of Valentine in the show was consistent with Lorenz Hart's own insecurities and belief that he was too short and ugly to be loved; consequently, the lyrics are sufficiently gender-neutral to allow the song to be sung about a person of any gender. This concert band arrangement has been produced from the jazz ensemble version by Michael Sweeney, created in 1988.

Always on My Mind was originally conceived as a ballad written by Wayne Carson, Johnny Christopher, and Mark James and first recorded by country artist Brenda Lee in 1972. The song has been a crossover hit, charting in both country and pop categories. Elvis Presley's recording was the first commercially successful version of the song, followed by a 1987 hi-NRG/synth-pop interpretation from Pet Shop Boys (which reached UK number one and made US Top Ten). This version by PSB came about in 1987 as part of an anniversary show called 'Love Me Tender', to mark 10 years since the death of Elvis Presley (who had also charted well with the song) - in November 2004, The Daily Telegraph placed the version at number two in a list of the 50 best cover versions of all time and ten years later, a public poll compiled by the BBC saw the song voted the all-time best cover version. My Cherie Amour is a 1969 song by singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder. The song reached number 4 on the Billboard pop chart in August to become Wonder's third Top Ten hit. Motown songwriters Henry Cosby and Sylvia Moy collaborated on the song with Wonder; Moy came up with the intriguing title, a combination of English and French in a manner reminiscent of the Beatles' Michelle which was a massive hit in 1966. The song entered British pop charts in late July 1970, and five weeks later it had again hit number 4. Portions of the song were sampled by British DJ Philip George for his single Wish You Were Mine which topped the UK Dance Chart in 2014, proving the enduring quality of this lovely song, arranged for concert band in a gentle cha-cha style with short solos for trumpet and flute.

The music is the Irish folk song, Slane referring to Slane Hill. Slane Hill is about ten miles from Tara in County Meath. It was on Slane Hill around 433 AD that St. Patrick defied a royal edict by lighting candles on Easter Eve. High King Logaire of Tara had decreed that no one could light a fire before Logaire began the pagan spring festival by lighting a fire on Tara Hill. Logaire was so impressed by Patrick’s devotion that, despite his defiance (or perhaps because of it), he let him continue his missionary work.
