John McAllister #664636. Published by John McAllister (A0.1061119). This is a light and fun arrangement of the famous French-Canadian Folk Song Alouette. It falls in the easy category and should be able to be accomplished by players as young as first, maybe second year. It goes through a few iterations of the melody and passes it around many times from each instrument to the next. You can choose to swing all or part of it in order to sound more like the original. I didn't choose to notate that to make it more accessible to younger players. Suggested combinations: Brass Quintet Woodwind Quintet (mix-match of flute, oboe, clarinet including bass, alto saxophone, tenor sax, baritone sax) Woodwind Quintet (standard - flute, oboe, horn, clarinet, bassoon) Saxophone Quintet Mix-match between brass and woodwinds Full Band - as a flexible instrumentation ensemble This piece falls into my larger chamber music initiative that seeks to create accessible, ready to play arrangements and compositions to get young musicians PLAYING MUSIC with others. Because it is so adjustable, many different combinations can be used in order to facilitate music making. A great example, a middle school band director can teach the piece as a full ensemble piece, then break the group into smaller groups (i.e. flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, bass clarinet.. or whatever works with the band director's instrumentation!).

Abraham Lincoln Funeral March for Concert BandBy John Gross Barnard Orchestrated by Jari Villanueva This funeral march written by John Gross Barnard was performed by the United States Marine Band during the funeral procession from the Executive Mansion to the Capitol for Abraham Lincoln on April 19, 1865. The march is titled: Funeral March in Memory of the Abraham Lincoln: Played at the Obsequies of the President of the United States by the US Marine Band. The funeral march follows the standard format of dirges of the time (most notable are Webster’s Funeral March, Chopin’s Funeral March and March in Saul by Handel) written in minor keys (considered somber) and divided into eight measure phrases which makes it easy for the funeral cadence to be played underneath. This funeral march, like most written during this time, has a transition to a major key (happier sounding). This march goes to the relative major (D minor to D major) key. Since no parts are extant from the US Band, I was asked to score the march for a modern symphonic band. An ensemble using any combination of instruments (as is often found within schools) will work effectively as well. Example: A quintet might be selected as follows: 1A (violin), 2C(trumpet), 3B (clarinet), 4B (tenor sax), 5D (trombone) The melody in 1A would be very simple but would contrast nicely when passed to the more difficult 2C. Parts 3B and 4B will have quite a simple accompaniment between them, whilst the bass line on 5D will be more complex and rhythmically interesting. Parts can obviously be doubled up as well beyond five players. Please note that the teacher of the ensemble should be careful to pick parts which are well-suited to the players’ abilities. IT'S TIME FOR REGGAE is the third piece in this series, and has typical characteristics of the style, including the off-beat rhythm in parts 3 and 4, and the bass line which becomes more fluid in the more difficult part 5s. You could also have a drummer play an authentic 'one-drop' rhythm with the kick and side-stick both on 2 and 4. Please listen to the mp3 file, which is an electronic example of the piece being played with a typical setup. Score and all parts are included here in a variety of pitches, clefs and transpositions. An ensemble using any combination of instruments (as is often found within schools) will work effectively as well. Example: A quintet might be selected as follows: 1A (violin), 2C(trumpet), 3B (clarinet), 4B (tenor sax), 5D (trombone) The melody in 1A would be very simple but would contrast nicely when passed to the more difficult 2C. Parts 3B and 4B will have quite a simple accompaniment between them, whilst the bass line on 5D will be more complex and rhythmically interesting. Parts can obviously be doubled up as well beyond five players. Please note that the teacher of the ensemble should be careful to pick parts which are well-suited to the players’ abilities. CRAZY LATIN! is the second piece in this series, and has additional parts for Latin percussion commonly found in the classroom. Suggested percussion rhythms are also provided with phrases by which students can remember the rhythms. You are obviously free to alter these in any way, or add additional instruments however. Please listen to the mp3 file, which is an electronic example of the piece being played with glockenspiel on 1C, piano on 2B, xylophone on 3B, clarinet on 4A and 'cello on 5D. This jazz standard has been covered by many artists over the years, including George Shearing, Anita O'Day, Frank Sinatra, Robbie Williams and Seth MacFarlane - it is also cited as a potential inspriation, in its bridge passage, for saxophonist John Coltrane.
