Over the past few years I have become obsessed with Norse Mythology, and I mean real Norse Mythology. I say that withquotes because in my research I realized that a lot of people tell different stories. This is mainly because back when Christianity was growing,the Christians saw anything that wasn't Christian as pagan, so they got rid of it all. So that is why Greek, Roman, and Norse religions faded into mythologies, and all that was left was passed around in folk tales. And also because Marvel tells a very different tale of the mythology than the research I have collected and I want people to know these stories. Now moving passed the history lesson and into the music. This is interesting for me because this is the biggest original piece that I've ever made. This is going to be a multimovement piece, and this is the 1st movement, Ginnungagap, the endless void. This movement describes The Void, and the two lands of Fire(Muspelheim) and Ice(Niflhiem).Starting with The Void, it describes the blackness, and I use the absence of instruments to give this feeling, but however to give2 of the other themes to foreshadow it. It moves into this wild cascading theme for the Niflheim theme to describe the cold cascading environment of the world.After that it slows into a dark and ominous theme for Muspelheim(Surtr's Destiny). This was an interesting part to make because in mythology, Surtr, also referred to as Surt, is the fabled fire giant who destroys Asgard. No one knows where hecomes from, but from the moment of his creation, he knew of his destiny to destroy Asgard so he spent all of his time forging his sword to burrow into Asgard. I used a break drum to symbolize a hammer hitting an anvil to forge a sword, a lingering sound of Surtr's destiny.After this, I brought both themes together to resemble The Clash of the two worlds to create the Norse universe.The final theme in this first movement is entitled I am Ymir. In myhtology, Ymir is the father of everything. Created from the clash, he gave creation to all the gods, humans, giants, elves, and dwarves. This final theme takes Surtr's theme and flipsit to be mo.

Since I was a child I've looked up at the sky and seen a world full of wonder, beauty, and mystery. The same wonder that filled my heart when I was in elementary school still takes hold when I look up now, decades later. I chose the formation of things for a specific reason. When I was a kid I had a habit of asking my parents where everything came from. It wasn't enough that a star was there, I needed to know how it got there and if possible why it was there. As I grew up I developed an immense appetite for almost all things science and history and with that came some of the answers I needed. The reality of how these things came to be was so much more interesting and astounding than my imagination that all these years later I am still captivated by the idea of an exploding star or the Big Bang. So lets take a journey, you and I. First we'll see the death of an immense star and watch as its own gravity rips it apart and forms a black hole. We'll see it feed on matter and light around it until it too finally dies. Next we'll go back 13.7 billion years and watch as tiny particles dance in and out of existence in the endless nothingness that once was. We'll see one of these tiny bits expand in an instant and give rise to everything that ever has been or will be. Watch hydrogen form and gravity pull it into the first stars. Those stars will form galaxies and we'll see glimpses of the Universe as it exists now. Finally, we will travel to the end of time, a trillion years or more into the future. There we will witness the dissipation of the galaxies, the death of stars, and the final moments as even tiny electrons are pulled apart into the nothing from which we all came. Parts of this piece are violent, but we will see that at the end of time, the formation of nothing is just as beautiful as the formation of a star. Everything has its time and everything ends. As a composer, musical ideas pop into my head every day. Most of them are completely unrelated to any piece I am currently working on, and I manage to write some of them down for future reference. The theme to Morning Sunrise is one of those ideas. When I wrote it down, I had no idea that I was ever going to create a piece from it, so I just wrote it down for strings.Several months later, however, I had decided that I wanted to write a piece to thank those who have made my high school music life great. I spent weeks developing 4 or 5 themes and even had half of a piece done at one point, but none of theme worked. I then remembered this one from and realized that it was the perfect theme.The result of taking so long to complete this piece is that it is a very powerful piece where there are no extraneous notes, and no missing ones either. But I also had a number of players who could move faster and play more challenging rhythms and notes than others. What to do? How about a simple arrangement with flexible part assignments?JINGLE THOSE BELLS! is a super-easy setting of Jingle Bells. The work opens with the traditional unison rendition of the melody, as found in almost every beginner band method book ever written. But then, after a brief pause, the melody is repeated, but now faster and with the addition of a bass line and rhythmic accompaniment. The rhythmic accompaniment is provided by several of your best clarinet, sax, and trumpet players who play the Advanced Part. And if you are short on bass voice instruments, you can utilize the optional bass parts for Alto Sax. Super flexible and a bit humorous, it takes a little score study to realize how adaptable this piece is. Guaranteed to work with your beginners! (PS: the printed music shows Callie May, our cat, as arranger. I gave her credit so my wife could play more than one piece by me at her holiday concerts without looking too biased! Layers of counterpoint bathe the piece in an ethereal wash of beautiful textures and colours which soar above the melody line.Rehearsal notes:This study in counterpoint needs clear layers with beautifully balanced and blended dynamics and tone. The piece should build up gradually with crescendos and decrescendos carefully observed so that the band swells and fades as a whole, particularly at rehearsal figure B. The chromatic phrases at rehearsal figures B and D need to be smooth and in time, not at all hurried. The melody is a feature for the lower instruments, including tuba, and is an opportunity for these instruments to explore increased ranges and to work on a full well- rounded, lyrical tone.About the composer:Neille Williams is a multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer based in Canberra, Australia. After graduating from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Neille worked as an in-demand musician, composer and conductor on the Sydney music scene before taking her talents abroad. Andaluza, taken from Manuel de Falla’s piano suite Cuatro Piezas Españolas, is aimed at the mainstream high school band in the United States at the grade 4 level. Boisterous tuttis, intimate solos, and passionate melodies make for an engaging excursion into Spanish folk music that allows students to explore the adventurous harmonies of de Falla's impressionistic vocabulary. The variety of colors and energy in the modern concert band amplify the life, drama, and humanity de Falla poured into his piano version. Andaluza will thus prove a thrill for both performers and audience as it celebrates this life, drama, and humanity.Soprano Sax is called for on an expressive solo but is fully cued in oboe. My imagination runs wild contemplating what may be pictured in de Falla’s music. It certainly seems to be a civic gathering: perhaps a wedding, a baptism, a dedication, or a feast taking place in the civic square of perhaps on a hacienda. There are scenes that may be dancing, speeches, passionate sonnets, arguments, celebrations, all ending in a lingering mysterious question with a tinge of hopefulness. Whatever Falla may have have had in mind it is full of life, drama, and humanity.I first became aware of de Falla’s work, particularly Andaluza, in the summer of 2021 during an online orchestration seminar. Each of Cuatro Piezas’s movements expresses Spanish folk music idioms through an impressionistic lens reflecting Debussy’s influence on de Falla. Andaluza immediately struck me as music that would shine in the realm of the concert band. It was a joy to explore de Falla’s music, transforming the implications of the piano stylings into the nuances and colors available to the modern wind ensemble. It was just as much if not more challenging to develop this arrangement than creating my own original music typically proves to be. An der schönen blauen Donau (The Blue Danube) is known all over the world and every year a fixed encore at the New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic broadcasted in most countries of the world. Previous to the orchestra version it was premiered on 15 February 1867 in a separate version with male-choir. So it is a real challenge to create an arrangement of this famous piece, which may dare a comparison with the original. The arrangement is kept in the original key of the composition for symphony orchestra and was commissioned and first time performed by Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic Salzburg conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their Three Kings' Concert on 6 January 2019 in the Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall) in Salzburg, Austria and broadcasted live by Austrian television.
