Includes score and parts: Flute, Clarinet, Alto Sax 1, Alto Sax 2, Bb Trumpet, Trombone (or Baritone), Mallets, Bass Drum, and Cymbals. When I arranged this, I only had early elementary clarinet players so that part is entirely written below the break. It can be taken up an octave for more advanced players. There is a flute solo for your best flute player, it could also be omitted if necessary. The mallet part could also be omitted in a pinch. It Is Well With My Soul is a hymn penned by hymnist Horatio Spafford and composed by Philip Bliss. First published in Gospel Songs No. 2 by Ira Sankey and Bliss (1876), it is possibly the most influential and enduring in the Bliss repertoire and is often taken as a choral model, appearing in hymnals of a wide variety of Christian fellowships. Horatio Spafford's original lyrics are included below. I composed this piece because I wanted to get myself used to composing for large ensembles, wind ensemble particularly. This composition took the most time and energy in creating the biggest work I have taken on thus far. This piece allowed me to get a better insight of my creativity as well as incorporate the lessons I have learned from my music professors. The experience was well worth it for I now know what I am capable of in my compositions and I look forward to working on more works in large ensembles in the future. During the time I composed this piece, I was expecting to have it performed around April 2020. However, that was around the time when COVID started spreading around the world and so that experience was lost to me. I hope someday it will be performed under better days.

Published by Scott Custer Jr (A0.1153691). My first complete concert band piece. It's been in the works for about 3 months. The early drafts of this piece were written in April/May and were then left to collect dust for months. I wrote it to experiment with melodic/harmonic minor scales and did not intend to finish the piece. Around the same time I wrote the early drafts of the piece, my high school band director asked if I wanted to write a piece for the concert band. I agreed and spent months working on different pieces of music, completing none of them. Around late October I stumbled across this looking through old pieces of music for some new ideas. I listened through it 3 or 4 times and decided to continue the piece. After spending roughly two months finishing the draft, and another month revising and adding parts, I had finally finished Trapped. When I started working on this piece with the intention of finishing it, I was at a difficult point in my life. I had recently come home from my rookie season of drum corps and was still transitioning back to the real world. The freedom of tour had been taken away from me, I had mentally matured a lot during the summer. While only 17 I felt like I was stuck with a bunch of kids. I had spent all summer with friends much older than me, learning a lot from them and taking inspiration from them in many ways. When I started this piece, I was conflicted with many thoughts and emotions. I was still under the impression that my peers in the music program hated me because of some of my actions last year. The girl from home I had been talking with all summer while I was gone, and hoped to start a relationship with, lied to me while I was gone about many things, causing me to remove them from my life. The last year and a half have involved many events like losing my best friend of 5 years because of, what I consider, an overreaction on my part; being used for my kindness; lied to; having secrets about me revealed behind my back by those I trusted; being a therapy friend; constant overthinking; as well as toxic friendships I didn’t want to leave because I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I felt trapped. I had spent so long trying to improve myself to become who I am today, and I still felt like crap. Even though I knew and promised myself I wouldn’t follow through, I was battling suicidal thoughts and I was in a severely depressive episode of my life. I wrote this piece to express the feeling of overthinking, being trapped in your mind, and the road to recovery. The constant back-and-forth battles with yourself, unsure of where to go and what to do next; feeling trapped. I hope that this piece connects and resonates with those of you in a similar position to what I was in, and I promise there is a way out and that life does get better. And with that, I present to you, Trapped.

The song was written by the band members with James Abrahart, Jason Evigan, Rami Yacoub and Sarah Hudson, with production by Fabrizio Ferraguzzo, during a recording session in Los Angeles, California. The Loneliest was performed live for the first time during the group's performance at Underworld in London on 6 October 2022.The frontman Damiano David talked about the meaning of the song:  The song is somewhere between a love letter and a will. I wrote it at a very difficult time in my life, when I was away from home and the people I love. The idea is: what would I want to say to these people if I were to die? It talks about feelings that everyone can relate to, and we would love to understand how different people understand the lyrics. We are happy that we were able to take some time to write a lot of new music. We chose to come out with this single because it shows a side of us that people haven't seen yet and we wanted to start our new journey from here..

Some years ago, I saw a video of an orangutang sort of running about with some latin music and it was labled Salsa Time and I knew that someday I would write a piece with that title. Well, once it was finished, and I listened and meditated over what it said to me, what I heard was the westward migration of the early settlers of America, only in and through Mexico. Journey To The Setting Sun became my title, but to give it a bit more authenticity, the title is in Spanish, and has become Viaje al Atardeser.The piece opens with a train whistle. If you have none, the Flute 1 & 2 parts have it simulated. Rehearsal markers 1A through 1D serve as layers that lead to the main melody starting at A. At letter B, the Solo 1st trumpet takes on the melody with a slight variation of rhythm. There is a trombone trio from C to D. If you have 3 stong trombonists, I recommend the Eupf and Baritone TC opt out of playing through this section, in order to highlight your great trombone section. *Optional* You may, at your discretion put a fermata after the first beat of the bar before D and allow your solo trumpeter to play a free form cadenza. The mp3 has a sample of how this would sound. The cadenza would end with the pick-up to letter D and you may feel free to let that high note of the solo trumpet ring for a second or two before cuing the rest of the band in. Although from D to the a tempo 4 bars before E is a trumpet solo, the most crucial part of that section is the tambourine part going into double time, creating that extra pop and sense of urgency.This piece represents a watershed moment in my life, as it is my first composition for Concert Band.I encourage all feedback at sirlunch@gmail.comI hope you enjoy it!

The main theme is inspired by the introduction of the piece. Delicate and child-like. The ostinato in the beginning of the piece that double reeds have displays the feeling of a “child-like†waltz. The pattern is in 3 but it should be played as if it is in 6/8, with emphasis on beats 1 and 3. There should be weight to the sound but it should not be heavy. Sometimes in life, (as both teens and adults) we tend to get caught up in stress or worries and we forget to take a break, relax and destress a little. This piece reminds us to go back to our childlike roots. As the theme in Section A expands, it takes a turn in Section B where the tempo picks up. (Players are encouraged to have as much fun as they can with this part.) At and after the exposed bassoon part at m.50, in the words of my old high school band director, “Let it rip potato chip!†(Meaning give it all you’ve got and have fun). Brass are encouraged to play the dynamics as written in this section but listen to each other. Section C is a bridge to the 7/8 in Section D. Section D, reintroduces the theme in the form of a trumpet solo while brass and some of the woodwinds have the ostinato. Be careful euphonium & tuba because you’re missing a beat on purpose! Section E is the “Medley†of all the parts that were previously played with only tuba playing in the relative minor so it sticks out at the bottom of the ensemble. This is symbolic of the piece itself, showing that the pressures of life can be overcome by keeping a good attitude and persevering through those tough times that you encounter. Section F is another “bridge†beginning with the flute solo reiterating the theme one last time before the “descent and climb†(starting at m.137) to the final destination: Section G. Section G should be played like an overture. Full and with joy and a “coming alive-ness†to it therefore bringing life to the once dead emotions that once were. The ending with the oboe/bassoon duet should be played as quietly as possible & as in tune as possible.

It certainly seems to be a civic gathering: perhaps a wedding, a baptism, a dedication, or a feast taking place in the civic square of perhaps on a hacienda. There are scenes that may be dancing, speeches, passionate sonnets, arguments, celebrations, all ending in a lingering mysterious question with a tinge of hopefulness. Whatever Falla may have have had in mind it is full of life, drama, and humanity.I first became aware of de Falla’s work, particularly Andaluza, in the summer of 2021 during an online orchestration seminar. Each of Cuatro Piezas’s movements expresses Spanish folk music idioms through an impressionistic lens reflecting Debussy’s influence on de Falla. Andaluza immediately struck me as music that would shine in the realm of the concert band. It was a joy to explore de Falla’s music, transforming the implications of the piano stylings into the nuances and colors available to the modern wind ensemble. It was just as much if not more challenging to develop this arrangement than creating my own original music typically proves to be. After two years of off and on progress with months in between, I finally had the motivation to finish my third wind band piece, Nuclear. When first composing this piece, I imagined an apocalyptic scene, similar to that of those video games set in some kind of wasteland (hence the name, Nuclear). The piece is completely through-composed, and around the 3:30 minute mark, I decided to shift the theme from armageddon to rebuilding and hope. Here, the piece makes a sudden character change with a rather abrupt transition, which actually just results from my lack of skill in writing... Either way, the overall story that I am trying to tell, whether it be literal or philosophical, is that life will eventually return to normal, as one takes absorbed damage and attempts to heal. This is applicable especially today, as the 2020 pandemic has torn apart lives from all cultures and backgrounds. Someday, we will be celebrating the moment that we can all be together again. Please, if you like wind band repertoire, consider giving this piece a listen and find the story it can tell in your life. Thank you, and enjoy Nuclear.

There are many moments in our lives but none more significant than birth and death. Whilst birth is openly celebrated in our society, death however is treated as dark and sombre.I was moved to compose this piece Laid to Rest as I saw death as a final resting place and the funeral, a celebration of that person’s life as he is sent off on a journey of peace. Hence, this piece takes on a lighter, hopeful yet reflective feel compared to other pieces of heavier, melancholic notes.I was deeply honoured when it was first played / performed at Singapore’s late founding father Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew’s funeral. I had to control my tears as I was conducting the band and was so grateful for being able to honour him with my composition.During this pandemic, there are many healthcare heroes on the frontline working tirelessly to protect all of us. Some have even sacrificed their lives. I would like to dedicate this to these heroes. May they and their loved ones find comfort in this piece.

Brahms composed the Alto Rhapsody, properly known as Rhapsody for Alto, Male Chorus, and Orchestra, opus 53 in 1869. It was first performed in Jena on March 3, 1870. The text is based on Harzreise im Winter (Winter Journey in the Harz Mountains), a poem by well-known German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832). The Alto Rhapsody, like many of Brahms’ works, has loneliness and alienation as its central themes. Brahms’ devotion to Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann’s widow, is well-known (the letters between her and Brahms fill two volumes). What is less well-known is that he was undoubtedly very fond of Julie Schumann, Clara’s daughter.In 1869, Brahms spent the summer near the Schumann’s residence and was in daily contact with Julie and Clara completing, among other works, the Liebeslieder (Love Song) Waltzes. In early July, Julie announced her engagement. Of course, I told Johannes first of all, Clara noted in her diary on the 11th. Soon after, the conductor Hermann Levi told her that Brahms had been devotedly attached to her daughter. By July 16th, Clara noted in her diary that Brahms speaks only in monosyllables . . . [and] treats Julie in the same manner, although he used to be so especially nice to her. Did he love her? Julie was married on September 22. Later on that very wedding day, Brahms called on Clara, who wrote in her diary, Johannes brought me a very wonderful piece . . . the words from Goethe’s Harzreise. . . He called it his bridal song. This piece seems to me neither more nor less than the expression of his own heart’s anguish. If only he would for once speak so tenderly! This piece is of course the dark and emotional Alto Rhapsody. Goethe’s poem Harzreise im Winter poetically describes the kind of life God intends for different temperaments. The three stanzas set by Brahms concern the fate of a man in fruitless struggle against the bonds of misery. A young man, turned misanthropic by sorrow, seeks solitude in the wilderness. The piece is in the baroque cantata style, with an opening recitative, and aria, and a concluding chorale. The alto describes the desolate winter landscape and in the final chorale joins the male chorus in a prayer for a melody that can bring comfort to the thirsting soul (indeed the plea restore his heart is repeated three times at the end, as a kind of Amen). In the Alto Rhapsody it is not hard to find evidence for Brahms’ statement that I speak through my music.
