The Last Emperor is a 1987 epic biographical drama film about the life of Puyi, the final Emperor of China. It is directed by Bernardo Bertolucci and depicts Puyi's life from his ascent to the throne as a small boy to his imprisonment and political rehabilitation by the Chinese Communist Party. It premiered at the 1987 Tokyo International Film Festival, earning widespread positive reviews from critics and was also a commercial success. At the 60th Academy Awards, it won all nine Oscars it was nominated for, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It also won several other accolades, including three BAFTA Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, nine David di Donatello Awards, and a Grammy Award for its musical score, which features nine pieces composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto, five by David Byrne, one from Cong Su, and a few incidental pieces of source music. 'Open The Door' occurs quite early in the film and can be considered to be one of the main themes, often performed instrumentally in concert by Ryuichi Sakamoto - as a song, with lyrics by Leslie Bricusse, it is not often heard, so this piece would work on many levels in a concert of film music.

Fantasy on “Nassau†(2004) for organ and four-part band was written for and is dedicated to Wayne Leupold and Kernersville Moravian Church, Kernersville, NC.The work is based on the Moravian chorale tune NASSAU. The opening section of the work is slow and mystical: the band plays the first few notes of the chorale and the organ emerges from the chords with harmonic commentary.In the next section the organ and the band present the tune antiphonally because the organ emerges with a triplet figuration. This next development section builds to a climax. The band then plays the chorale tune all the way through for the first time with an organ “descant.â€The final section recalls the opening material and the work ends in tranquillity The disposition and instrument assignments for the parts is left at the conductor’s discretion. Though conceived originally for the “Moravian church bands†of the American South, the work may be played by any sort of band (including concert band) or combination of brass or wind instruments.

The verse section of the song is soft but eventually thrusts the listener into a powerful chorus section. The song creates this warm summer like feeling, hence its use of major and minor 7th chords, which is very fitting for its time of release (July 15, 2022). To add to the warmth of the song, JVKE changes the pitch of the song to A=432 hertz tuning, instead of the conventional A=440 hertz tuning. Many people believe that A=432 hertz tuning decreases the listener’s heart rate and sounds more peaceful, which which perfectly fits the mood of the song. With these lyrics and musical techniques combined, GOLDEN HOUR gives the listener an amazing and moving experience, and is why it is one of the most viral songs on the internet.  This song was chosen to be arranged for the Scarsdale High School Honors Wind Ensemble because of its popularity among teenage students, as well as to welcome the new director of bands, Mr. Brian Zeller. Never before in human history have we had direct knowledge of planets orbiting a star other than our own sun. Using observation of star wobbles and other techniques scientists have identified distant worlds with names like Kepler-69c (pictured on the cover of the score in an artist's conception). The fictitious Exoplanet 42 is explored in the listener's imagination guided by the music. The planets numeration is a homage to the late writer Douglas Adams. The piece should be a big hit for Back to School 2015..

Always on My Mind was originally conceived as a ballad written by Wayne Carson, Johnny Christopher, and Mark James and first recorded by country artist Brenda Lee in 1972. The song has been a crossover hit, charting in both country and pop categories. Elvis Presley's recording was the first commercially successful version of the song, followed by a 1987 hi-NRG/synth-pop interpretation from Pet Shop Boys (which reached UK number one and made US Top Ten). This version by PSB came about in 1987 as part of an anniversary show called 'Love Me Tender', to mark 10 years since the death of Elvis Presley (who had also charted well with the song) - in November 2004, The Daily Telegraph placed the version at number two in a list of the 50 best cover versions of all time and ten years later, a public poll compiled by the BBC saw the song voted the all-time best cover version. The PSB cover has recenbtly been used in the acclaimed British film 'All Of Us Strangers', launching it back into popularity again - this arrangement features, towards the end, an ad lib repeated section where your lead alto sax can really bring down the house!
