The song had been written for performances by bass and tenor vocal duet.The song begins: Dark the shades of night are growing, keen and chill the wind is blowing, bright the watchfire lights are glowing, 'Tis the battle eve…The piece appears to have been composed in the early 1890s with the first recorded performance at the Athenaeum in Melbourne (Australia) in May 1893. ‘The Battle Eve’ was very popular during the First World War period with many performances at many concerts related to the war effort in Australia. This included patriotic concerts held across Australia during 1914. The first of these was a patriotic concert held at the School of Arts, South Grafton, New South Wales, on Tuesday 1 September 1914. Miss Eva Beatson performed the song with proceeds from the evening totaling 52 pounds. Parts 3B and 4B will have quite a simple accompaniment between them, whilst the bass line on 5D will be more complex and rhythmically interesting. IT'S TIME FOR REGGAE is the third piece in this series, and has typical characteristics of the style, including the off-beat rhythm in parts 3 and 4, and the bass line which becomes more fluid in the more difficult part 5s. You could also have a drummer play an authentic 'one-drop' rhythm with the kick and side-stick both on 2 and 4. "God Defend New Zealand" was written as a poem in the 1870s by Irish-born, Victorian-raised immigrant Thomas Bracken of Dunedin. A competition to compose music for the poem was held in 1876 by The Saturday Advertiser and judged by three prominent Melbourne musicians, with a prize of ten guineas. The winner of the competition was the Tasmanian-born John Joseph Woods of Lawrence, New Zealand who composed the melody in a single sitting the evening after finding out about the competition. The song was first performed at the Queen’s Theatre, Princes Street, Dunedin, on Christmas Day, 1876. [Wikipedia]

THREE CHRISTMAS CAROLS - SET ONE features the following selections - Silent Night, Sleep, Holy Babe, and Lo, How a Rose. This medley has been written with flexible scoring options permitting performance by a wide variety of wind instruments. While this selection may be performed as a quartet, best results are obtained by performance of at least five heterogeneous instruments. The full score has been revised and groups instruments in an easier to read format. The vibraphone part is optional but adds an additionally rich sonority and texture.Performance duration is about 4 minutes and 35 seconds utilizing the tempi suggested. The following concert-pitched key centers are found in this selection: Bb Major, F Major, C Major, and Db Major. While any combination of wind instruments are possible, the instruments in the accompanying mp3 audio file primarily comprise a woodwind septet, and a keyboard percussion instrument. It can be used for technical purposes (warming up/tuning, for example) or for a performance piece showcasing tone and sensitivity. It can be used art the beginning of every rehearsal, and performers can even sing their parts as an additional exercise. It is a sacred piece of music, but is completely appropriate for students and schools. I use it with my own concert bands. It would be appropriate in religious settings as well. The accompanying mp3 track can be used a a reference for learning the piece. It is brief, lasting about 1.25 minutes.
