The program note that appears in the original printed score is noted here:There is a wedding feast in progress in the village inn, with music, dancing, carousing. Mephistopheles and Faust pass by, and Mephistopheles induces Faust to enter and take part in the festivities. Mephistopheles snatches the fiddle from the hands of a lethargic fiddler and draws from it indescribably seductive and intoxicating strains. The amorous Faust whirls about with a full-blooded village beauty in a wild dance; they waltz in mad abandon out of the room, into the open, away into the woods. The sounds of the fiddle grow softer and softer, and the nightingale warbled his love-laden song. Mephisto Waltz No. 1 is paired with a work preceding it, Midnight Procession (Der Nächtliche Zug), however this piece is not as widely performed. Liszt later transcribed the waltz into a piano duet and a virtuosic solo piano work. Each of these versions were written around the same time, roughly 1859-62. The orchestral version also has an alternate ending, which is softer and fades away. This arrangement features both endings. This work was then followed by three more Mephisto Waltzes. No. 2 was also written as both an orchestral and piano work, while Nos. 3 and 4 were for piano only. Associated for a time with symbolism, but unclassifiable, it was recognized as a precursor of several movements, including neoclassicism, surrealism, minimalism and repetitive music Je te veux is a song by Erik Satie for the music, and Henry Pacory for the lyrics. This sentimental slow waltz was created at La Scala, in Paris, in 1903, for the singer Paulette Darty, for whom Erik Satie was for a time the accompanist. Published by James K. Taylor (A0.872426). This is a fun arrangement of GO TELL AUNT RHODY. I use a fail-safe beginning band instrumentation. 1. Flute, Oboe, Bells 2. clarinet (trumpet double) no playing across the break 3. Alto Sax 4. Tenor Sax (horn double) 5. Trumpet (clarinet double) 6. Horn (tenor sax double) 7. Trombone, baritone, bassoon (bass clarinet and bari sax double) 8. Tuba 9. Percussion (snare and bass drum) I include a bass clarinet/baritone TC part and a bari sax part. Measures are numbered in both score and parts. This arrangement ends with a fun waltz, I keep the horns low to work on accuracy and a big sound instead of doubling the alto part. These three pieces (The Procession, Waltzing in the Rain and Tim's Dance) are presented here as a suite, but may of course be used individually. The instrumentation is flexible, allowing for various combinations of instruments, including Clarinet Quartet/Quintet/Ensemble, Saxophone Quartet/Quintet/Ensemble and Brass Quartet/Quintet/Ensemble. All Clarinet and Bass Clarinet parts are below the break and all notes for all parts are kept within a comfortable range for Elementary Level performers. The melody is shared between Parts 1, 2, 3 and 4, so that all players of these parts have important parts! The score is shown in concert pitch. Octave displacement occurs in some parts. Part 5 is Optional. Rhythmic values used: semibreve (whole note), dotted minim (dotted half-note), minim (half-note), crotchet (quarter-note), quavers (eighth-notes). Articulations/signs used: staccato, accent, slur, tie, repeat and pause. All three pieces are in Bb major (concert pitch), with no use of accidentals.
