Keiron Anderson brings us music for the moment, and perhaps no other moment yet in the 21st Century has revealed the vulnerable nature of humanity, and the interconnectedness of our world more than the COVID-19 pandemic, officially announced on March 11, 2020 by the World Health Organization.  The True Heroes is a piece that tells a part of the dramatic story of the struggles, heartaches and triumphs of the world’s medical professionals, and all who were a part of the health care industry to whom this piece is dedicated.  Using a dissonance in the chords, structured upon two perfect fifths a semi-tone apart, Anderson opens the story with suddenness and a pushed tempo that conveys an urgency and anxiety about the growing pandemic, and depicts how the health care workers are not people with super-powers, but rather individuals who are committed to self-sacrifice in using their skills to save the lives of others. The crisis is not over as we reach the middle of the piece where the tempo slows to a more thoughtful pace, allowing the health care worker (and the listener) a moment to rest, to reflect and to meditate, and to give enough time for the emotions to mend and energy to rebuild while the pandemic rages on around them.  Then the music once again resumes its original pace with growing fanfare for the health care worker and their resilience in the face of a momentous task, leading to a more dramatic and triumphal sound and force to conclude the piece.

The song is sung from the perspective of children who, upon seeing the Christ Child, ask “What should we give to the Child of the Mother?†First they choose their best-tasting foods: raisins, figs, walnuts and olives; then, a blanket for warmth from the cold. Finally, angels descend from Heaven to cradle the Child, singing “songs of glory that are not of the world.â€The carol may date from 18th-century Catalonia, which is today an autonomous community of Spain lying mostly on the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, with Barcelona — Spain's second-most populous city — as its capital.The Spanish guitar master Andres Segovia (1893-1987) often performed Miguel Llobet's (1878-1938) transcription of this simple, lovely tune as an encore.This arrangement is an ideal vehicle to teach lyrical playing and legato style; dynamic control and the shaping of phrases; and the “handing-off†of phrases and phrase segments from one section to another to sustain and complete a musical idea. Do You Hear How Many You Are? for Concert Band was originally written in April and May of 2010 for SATB choir. I made this concert band arrangement in 2012. The origins of this piece and text come from a very interesting experience I had in December of 2009. I have been learning a lot in the past few years about the state of our world and the many huge problems and crises we are faced with in the near future, and this discovery has been so daunting and overwhelming to me. So much change needs to happen in order for the near and long-term future of our world to be just and stable that I have felt a lot of guilt over my choice of profession. Why have I chosen to be a composer and musician when I could make more of an impact on solving these problems if I were a scientist or policy maker etc.? I have been struggling to find a solution to this dilemma for a while now and I just happened to be thinking about it, while filled with lots of stress and worries, one night as I was falling asleep in December of 2009. At the moment when I was in that state halfway between sleep and consciousness, I suddenly heard the line Do you hear how many you are? in my head, yet I felt as though I didn't come up with the line but that it was said TO me. I was instantly comforted, as if a load fell off my shoulders, and then I began to hear it being sung, which I knew was the beginning of a choral piece. I woke up, wrote down the music I was hearing (about the first six measures of the work) and then wrote down this entire poem. I truly feel that this message came to me for a reason, and that I need to share it through the music I create. Audiences and performers alike are sure to find it inspiring and uplifting.---A little about the history of the hymn:Could we with ink the ocean fill, and were the skies of parchment made;Were every stalk on earth a quill, and every man a scribe by trade;To write the love of God above would drain the ocean dry;Nor could the scroll contain the whole, though stretched from sky to sky.These timeless words inspired Lehman to write The Love of God after they were found edged on the wall of an asylum patient's room. They are an adaptation and translation of a poem originally written in Aramaic by the Jewish Rabbi of Worms, Germany around the year 1050. This poem in turn is similar to a passage in the Qur'an. What an incredible journey for these great words: an ancient poem that has its roots in the Qur'an, later adapted by a Rabbi, written on the wall of an insane asylum by a patient, and finally taken up by a Christian to be the basis of a beautiful song. Notes about the Music: In the spring of 2012, I was in Minnesota attending some performances, and had the fortunate opportunity of catching up with Matthew George, conductor of the Grand Symphonic Winds. Matt had given the world premiere performance of my Concerto for Brass Quintet (Dodecafecta), and has always had a major presence in the formation of new works for winds, so I was very delighted when he brought up the idea of a new work for his group. The Grand Symphonic Winds, in honor of their 25th anniversary, were looking to celebrate the influx of many international cultures which had become a significant part of the landscape in Minnesota. This immediately called out to me in musical terms, namely in the forms of rhythms and spirituality (hence the title!) The piece opens and closes with heroic and beautiful music, signifying (to me) what most cultures seem to all be saying, but in different languages: we all just want peace, harmony and love. The entire middle section is very rhythmic, using many percussion instruments found in different cultures, also represented in Minnesota: Latin America (claves, bongos), Africa (Djembe) and if possible, Southeast Asia (Dholak). And just for fun, I even spelled out Minnesota in Morse code, but this was merely for my own enjoyment! I wish to thank Matt George, for all he has done for the field of music in Wind Ensembles, and specifically to him and the Grand Symphonic Winds for entrusting to me the responsibility of composing this new work, which I truly hope finds its home in the literature. Published by Zack Richards (A0.894397). Throughout my youth, I was highly influenced by Science Fiction, especially Star Trek: The Next Generation. It inspired me from a creative, musical, and human perspective and was a large factor in most of my current views of the world in which we all live. This work is largely inspired by that show as well as other Star Trek shows and movies. The title is inspired by the idea of space, called the final frontier throughout Star Trek. The first melody pulls many aspects from the The Original Series, including the opening interval of a minor 7th, the rhythmic use of triplets, and the chromatic intervals in the second half of the melody. It sits over quartal harmonies which help create the open spacey sound. The countermelody introduced by the Oboe in measure 13 is inspired intervalically and rhythmically by the 2009 Star Trek reboot movie theme. These 2 melodies are used in various ways from start to finish, sometimes rhythmically diminished, sometimes just as a motif passed from one instrument to another. Every section has a moment to shine like a distant star in this fun sci-fi inspired piece.

The music then moves to a majestic trumpet processional. Entitled Soulful Peace, this tune honors those who made it possible for us to feel peace: parents, caregivers, family members, mentors, teachers, friends, and veterans who have served our country. Whether we feel the soulful melody in honor of them or in their memory, they remain an important part of our peace. After shifting to a calming woodwind verse, the processional then crescendos to a very emotive, full band verse. After the climax, the processional settles and gives way to a delicate chorus of It is Well With My Soul. The hymn tune begins delicately in the flutes, yet the brass echo the stately processional. The hymn majestically builds toward its own climax, accompanied by a trumpet fanfare. This triumphant piece reminds us that it can indeed be Well With My Soul!.

When Whittaker hosted a radio programme at that time, one of his ideas was to invite listeners to send their poems or lyrics to me and I would make songs out of them. We got a million replies, and I did one each week for 26 weeks. Webster, a silversmith from Birmingham, sent Whittaker his poem entitled The Last Farewell, and this became one of the selections to appear on the radio programme. It was recorded, and featured on Whittaker's 1971 album New World in the Morning (A Special Kind of Man in the US and Canada). It is one of the fifty all-time singles to have sold 10 million (or more) physical copies worldwide, peaking at number 2 on the UK Singles Chart. It was kept from number 1 by Rod Stewart's Sailing, resulting in an oddity that the top 2 songs in the UK singles chart at the time had a nautical theme. The Last Farewell also went to number 1 in 11 other countries, selling an estimated 11 million copies worldwide, making it Whittaker's best-known song.
