The main theme is inspired by the introduction of the piece. Delicate and child-like. The ostinato in the beginning of the piece that double reeds have displays the feeling of a “child-like†waltz. The pattern is in 3 but it should be played as if it is in 6/8, with emphasis on beats 1 and 3. There should be weight to the sound but it should not be heavy. Sometimes in life, (as both teens and adults) we tend to get caught up in stress or worries and we forget to take a break, relax and destress a little. This piece reminds us to go back to our childlike roots. As the theme in Section A expands, it takes a turn in Section B where the tempo picks up. (Players are encouraged to have as much fun as they can with this part.) At and after the exposed bassoon part at m.50, in the words of my old high school band director, “Let it rip potato chip!†(Meaning give it all you’ve got and have fun). Brass are encouraged to play the dynamics as written in this section but listen to each other. Section C is a bridge to the 7/8 in Section D. Section D, reintroduces the theme in the form of a trumpet solo while brass and some of the woodwinds have the ostinato. Be careful euphonium & tuba because you’re missing a beat on purpose! Section E is the “Medley†of all the parts that were previously played with only tuba playing in the relative minor so it sticks out at the bottom of the ensemble. This is symbolic of the piece itself, showing that the pressures of life can be overcome by keeping a good attitude and persevering through those tough times that you encounter. Section F is another “bridge†beginning with the flute solo reiterating the theme one last time before the “descent and climb†(starting at m.137) to the final destination: Section G. Section G should be played like an overture. Full and with joy and a “coming alive-ness†to it therefore bringing life to the once dead emotions that once were. The ending with the oboe/bassoon duet should be played as quietly as possible & as in tune as possible.

On December 14, 2012, at 9:35 a.m., the entire country stood motionless, for a horrific act of terror was underway. Adam Lanza shot and killed 20 first-graders and 6 adults, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut; a moment in history as one of the worst school shootings that our country has ever faced. Every single child which was murdered had a future of their own, taken away at the hands of a ruthless gunman, who in an instant, ended any chance that these 20 children had to have a happy life. Along with these children, were the 6 heroic staff members who so selflessly gave their life in order to stop this perpetrator who came to destroy the fragile object that we all call life. The title of this piece, The Sandy Hook Lullaby, is symbolic to represent the deaths and aftermath on that faithful day. This particular piece is a lullaby to represent the day that the victims lives were taken, ending with a peaceful goodbye. The song starts strong and valiant, to represent the beginning and potential of a new day. As it progresses, the song softens a bit, with clarinet lead, which represents the students learning in the classroom and the staff working as normal. A swell in volume represents the knowledge learned, as they are completely unaware of the events to follow. Halfway through, terror strikes. The percussion solo is representative of the the 5 minutes that the entire attack took place. The entire finale of the song is to represent the peaceful rest of those murdered, the final goodbye. The song ends softly, as the victims are put to rest, and because most of the victims were children, this comes in the form of a lullaby. Just as a loving and caring parent would put their child to sleep with a song, we give our final goodbyes with this Sandy Hook Lullaby. From this position of power earned on the battlefield, Solon was able to institute reforms and a new manner of governance. At a time when a high percentage of the people were steeped in indentured servitude due to crushing debt owed to a small percentage of aristocrats, his reforms were in no way popular, however they paved the way towards modern day democracy. Solon: Lawgiver of Athens depicts Athens during this time as Solon comes to power. You will hear the great city-state of Athens, the senate in turmoil, Solon shouting down the din, speaking calmly and with measured reason, and eventually you will hear a move towards a major tonality of the themes as Solon’s reforms take hold and social and economic stability is once again established. This piece was written to commemorate the opening of the Solon Center for the Arts in 2017 and was first performed by Solon High School Band in Solon, IA.

The Search for Hope is a work for wind orchestra comprised of three distinct motifs that tell a story of looking for hope.  Beginning with a crisp and airy feeling, this intensive work gives us a sense of taking flight over a diverse human landscape in the time reflecting the global pandemic, and the ensuing personal struggles, economic problems and conflicts that continue to have lasting consequences for so many people in the world.  Opening with a “questioning phrase,†illustrated by using a rising minor third motif, the music develops into a more ominous melody that is carried by the bass instruments.  From that questioning phrase the music sharply transitions into a second motif where the music picks up the pace with its own distinctive phrase and musical features, suggesting a time of invasions and military clashes, while tugging and moving our emotions back and forth with a single impression, and raising the question:  Where is hope found? With the final motif the tempo begins to slow and express a more tempered and solemn course of thought, punctuated by the higher brass that takes the lead in carrying the phrase of the music by using a descending minor third to carry the mood.  Allowing the music to reflect and express the vocal inflections used as when a mother gently speaks the name of her child with love and support—the very essence of hope.
