This beautiful, melodic movement, taken from Léon Boëllmann's famous Suite Gothique for Organ, has finally been arranged for Full Orchestra. The movement opens with a wonderful clarinet solo, accompanied by delicate strings, before gradually building up towards a full orchestral texture. The faster middle section offers a distinct contrast, with exquisite harmonies being brought to the fore by the rich brass section. This arrangement is the ideal concert piece, fully capable of being performed as a stand-alone movement. The other movements will be available soon from the same publisher.Included are both a conductor's score and all the parts, including multiple copies of the string parts to avoid the need for photocopying.Approximate duration: 4 minutes 10 seconds

Published by The Composer's Own Press (A0.944033). Composer’s Note: Enchanted Landscapes was commissioned by the Colorado Springs Philharmonic in recognition of the Association’s 90th Anniversary. Inspired by the theme of America the Beautiful, I decided to portray the actual beauty of the land, rather than to use Katharine Lee Bates and Samuel Ward's famous song as a musical reference. Thus, Enchanted Landscapes was composed as a single-movement Symphonic Poem, which transforms various visual elements of our magical views into an audible experience. The main melody is vast; Spanning over 30 measures, it conveys the feeling of spaciousness. Then, the same long melody repeats in a different, higher key. The middle part of the composition presents a fanfare-like theme, which builds up through both dynamics and polyphonic means. This section, dominated mainly by the brass and wind instruments, brings in a sense of drama, mystery, and purple mountain majesties. Finally, the use of Melodica sound in the otherwise traditional orchestration, adds a feeling of nostalgia and longing to the pure and proud landscape that watches upon us constantly, and connects us with the earth, with nature, and with ourselves. Published by Arkady Leytush (A0.1008425). Glazunov's orchestral repertoire includes two famous waltzes op. 47 and 51. Big concert waltz op. 41 was written exclusively for piano. I had a great desire to change the salon scale of this work, moving it to the concert stage, making a transcription for piano with a large symphony orchestra. The structure and periodicity of the musical form allowed me to realize this idea as a dialogue, a duet of a soloist and an orchestra. In some episodes, only the orchestra or only the solo piano sounds, while a number of other places are more like a typical concert for piano and orchestra. It was conceived as a pairing for the equally vivacious second symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven–his 250th birthday is this year–but can stand on its own as one of my hardest, most challenging works to cook up.This piece is dedicated to those forced to appear positive when internally they’re falling apart. The title is inspired by a quote that’s been with me for a while, Why is it that men can be bastards and women must wear pearls and smile? by Lynn Hecht Schafren, the celebrated American jurist famous for campaigning for gender equity in courts. I’m taking the quote out of its initial context, but the power of that quote, for me, exemplifies how hard it is to maintain a sense of emotional decorum and dignity when you’re authentically a hot mess. And what’s more of a musical hot mess than a fugue?There are two realities to this piece. I’ll quote Dmitri Shostakovich, from his autobiography: The rejoicing is forced, created under threat, […] It’s as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, ‘Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing,’ and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering ‘Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing.’ On the one hand, it is insincere happiness, cloying perhaps. But the other truth, I’ll quote Oscar Hammerstein II, from The King and I: While shivering in my shoes / I strike a careless pose / And whistle a happy tune / And no one ever knows, / I'm afraid. I forced myself, against all impulses of my current being, to forge happiness. This piece, with its origin being a mental puzzle (fugues are puzzles), it became a construct where I could lift myself up and regain a sense of purpose.
