I feel honored and thankful to have been asked by Greg Hustis and the Music In the Mountains festival in Durango, Colorado to compose a piece honoring local firefighters and first responders following a deadly outbreak of wildfires around that region during the summer of 2018. When I learned about the fires, my heart went out to all the people affected. As the fires closed in from all around, beautiful mountain landscapes were burnt black, homes were threatened, and residents were forced to evacuate; however, the city and peoples’ homes were ultimately kept safe and no one was injured, all because of the fearless efforts of those who laid their lives on the line. My inspiration for the music, as well as the title, came directly from these heroes whose courage and effort proved to shine brighter than the flames. Although this piece was originally commissioned in response to this disaster in 2018, at its heart the piece is a tribute to all the brave heroes out there who fight in countless ways in the midst of disasters every day to keep all of us and our communities safe.

Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra – Description and performance notes. The concerto provides a challenge for the performer and is delightful to the listener. It is written in the standard three movement concerto format: fast – slow – fast. A variety of musical colors, rhythms, and techniques are used. The first movement begins with an Adagio section which is marked Poco Rubato, followed by Allegro for the balance of the movement. The second movement is darker, and perhaps, a little sullen. The third movement is bright and harkens back to the guitar’s Spanish roots. The movement is happy and light, it has an abrupt and unexpected ending. Throughout the concerto the guitarist will use a wide range of techniques. The full sound spectrum of the guitar is utilized. The guitarist is asked to perform several rapid arpeggios (noted as Finger Roll) wherein the performer utilizes the thumb and fingers to rapidly play the notes in a chord. In other places, chords are to be played with three fingers playing up and the thumb to play down, using the nail (Flamenco style) – up and down referring to pitch. In the first movement, the thumb is used to tap the sound board. The guitar part is partially edited with suggested fingerings for clarity of intent. The balance is left for to the performer’s interpretation. In the second movement there is a completed tremolo section which requires the player to include the little or c finger. The inclusion of the c finger keeps the melodic line following without interruption. The second movement also has the melody played in artificial harmonics with the thumb playing simple a bass line. The third movement is the shortest. It has a challenging arpeggio pattern that uses the fingers strumming up and the thumb strumming down with rapid chord changes. The movements are in 4/4, 6/8, and 3/4 time respectively. Duration is approx. 13:18.

When composer Jerry Goldsmith was asked to write the score for MacArthur, people were surprised that he accepted the project because they wondered what he would have left to say, musically, after Patton. Jerry‘s feeling was that MacArthur was a totally different person, and it would be a real challenge to write about another military figure but do it in a different manner. He said “it‘s much more flamboyant in a different sort of way, and it was an interesting task“. Patton enjoyed resounding critical praise and has since been elevated to the designation of a classic. The film won Academy Awards for nearly all of its major players, with composer Jerry Goldsmith being an unfortunate exception. Goldsmith had already written many scores for World War II topics in his short mainstream career, but none would prove as memorable in any part as the march from Patton, a concert hall staple for the composer throughout his career. Despite the dominance of this theme and the fact that only roughly thirty minutes of music was employed in such a long picture, the effect of his score on the film is far more complicated than many people may realize. While the famous march, with all its bravado from brass, flutes, and snare, easily represents the identity of the character and war, Goldsmith’s work for the film actually spends more time dwelling on the deeper meanings of life that the general himself explored.Created from the original manuscript, this release offers a rare opportunity to study film music in its authentic, original orchestration and arrangement. The second, slower section is essentially a canon and variation on the 'Home Again' ballad from Act I of the show, while the third and final section is a radical development of the 'Battle of Flamborough Head' sequence from Act I of the musical. His long poem mentions that phoenixes are envoys of happiness in our world. They carry all the sadness and hatred and fly into the flame every five hundred years. By ending their lives, they bring happiness and peace to the world. After the ordeal, they can be reborn from the ashes with even stronger bodies.In Buddhism, pain in life is inevitable, but suffering is optional.
