These studies are specifically designed for non-professional orchestras, although any orchestra will improve by playing some of these pieces during rehearsals. It is always necessary to pay attention to intonation and many other aspects of orchestral performance.In addition, these studies are also useful for orchestral conducting students. For example, it is essential to know how to conduct a simultaneous attack of a chord that does not begin on the first beat, but a eighth note after the third beat.I began writing these studies around 2013, when I took over the direction of the Bremer Orchestergemeinschaft and noticed the complete absence of repertoire of this kind. As a pianist, I am accustomed to studies by Carl Czerny or playing scales. Each individual instrumentalist knows studies of technique for their instrument. However, there are no, or at least I am not aware of, similar studies for orchestral performance technique and the specific difficulties of ensemble playing that it requires. The cycle Orchestraining aims to fill this gap.The particular study Orchestraining Nr. 01 focuses on the subject of simultaneous attacks, presenting a series of staccato chords in different parts of the bar. The piece will be played twice, with different dynamics and (partly) different performing techniques (particularly in the strings: pizzicato vs. arco).Orchestraining No. 01 - simultaneous attacks*Orchestraining es un ciclo de estudios orquestales, cada uno de los cuales tematiza diferentes aspectos de la ejecución. Estos estudios están concebidos especÃficamente para orquestas no profesionales; sin embargo, cualquier orquesta mejorará si toca alguna de estas piezas durante los ensayos. Siempre es necesario cuidar la afinación y muchos otros aspectos de la ejecución orquestal.Adicionalmente, estos estudios son también útiles para estudiantes de dirección orquestal. Por ejemplo, es imprescindible saber cómo dirigir un ataque simultáneo de un acorde que no comienza en el uno, sino una corchea después del tercer tiempo.Comencé a escribir estos estudios hacia 2013, cuando asumà la dirección de la Bremer Orchestergemeinschaft y noté la ausencia total de repertorio de este tipo. Como pianista estoy acostumbrado a los estudios de Carl Czerny o a tocar escalas. Cada instrumentista, individualmente, conoce sobradamente estudios de técnica para su instrumento. Published by Jenny Joy Ahimsa Moore (A0.1447011). This piece is for a symphony that would play more challenging music. It is how I view, and harmonize, my dysfuctional/abusive family. The middle section falls apart much like my family truly was, behind closed doors. That is: we lived in the same house, but we did not communicate, we did not listen to each other. Near the end, it becomes much darker, almost funereal, like the truth of what being the youngest child (of a narcissistice mother, with an older narcissistic sister, a dad who chooses to remain ignorant) in my family was truly like. The various parts represent members of my family , sometimes several parts represent one member, or (at times) one part represents several members. Typically, the flute represents my sister, clarinet represents myself (sometimes tuba and trumpet as well). The parts overlap , to show how we did not listen and spoke at each other rather than with each other. This piece shows not just what each person was like on the outside, but also shows the more subtle sides of each member that few people really see or know about (the abuse behind closed doors). This piece is multi faceted, multi layered, like the 4 main members of my family are. The very end points to the Grace of God being the only thing that can heal my family at this point. The flute ends higher than clarinet, in the Hope that Healing can truly occur (not just my family, but with other families that hurt as well).

I adapted this movement of Bizet's only symphony for my high school orchestra so that they would have the experience and challenge of performing a major symphonic work written by Bizet when he was 17 years old-like many of them. The movement fit programing concerns (only lasting 12 minutes, 8 minutes without the repeat) and instrumentation demands for the orchestra I had at the school at that time. I found limited similar repertoire available that was appropriate to challenge my students. I was also personally motivated to dig deeper into this piece by adapting it, much like early composers learned by serving as copyists for previous musical legends. More recently, I performed this as a guest conductor with a senior level honors orchestra in Massachussetts. In both cases the work was the focus of musical stimulation as well as inspiring fully engaged student conversation about many aspects of this movement. In short, the students enjoyed preparing and performing the piece, almost as much as the audiences were impressed by the performances. Hopefully Bizet's teacher at the Paris Conservatiore, Charles Gounod, rewarded Bizet with a good grade! I put in the extra time to publish this so that many other students would have the opportunity to study this piece, composer, style and period of music. Johann Sebastian Bach wrote his Harpsichord Concerto no. 2 in E, BWV 1053 in 1738, and it was published in 1854 in Leipzig by C.F. Peters. This concerto is thought to be based on a concerto for a wind instrument, probably oboe or oboe d'amore, and from stylistic considerations, it may have dated from Bach's time in Leipzig. It exists, like BWV 1052, in a later transcription in his cantatas Gott soll allein mein Herze haben, BWV 169, and Ich geh und Suche mit Verlangen, BWV 49, from which further inferences can be made about the original concerto. Bach changed his method of arrangement with this work, significantly altering the ripieno parts from the original concerto for the first time, limiting much more to the tutti sections. The lower string parts were much reduced in scope, allowing the harpsichord bass to be more prominent, and the upper strings were likewise modified to allow the harpsichord to be at the forefront of the texture. A standard rendition of the piece lasts 19 minutes. The work calls for two violins, a viola, and a continuo section, besides the solo harpsichord.

I am not talking about just one spark either, but a series that beautifully led me to the creation of my piece. After seeing the 2022 MetSO program it was evident that it lightly using the Brass players, and I knew they were feeling a bit underutilised. Which sparked the first idea in my mind to write a piece that would take full advantage of their skills, and heavily use brass instruments. The program coincided with the 45th Anniversay of the Orchestra which started it life as the Karrinyup Symphony Orchestra. Rekindling the orchestra’s relationship with the City of Stirling and returning to the City of Stirling as a rehearsal venue in 2023, was another spark of inspiration which led me towards the piece’s naming… the ‘Karrinyup Fanfare’. The last spark of inspiration was a query inside my mind. The opening of the piece contrasts two somewhat conflicting meanings of the word Karrinyup. During an Aboriginal Studies unit, I discovered that Karrinyup is a Noongar word that translates to “the place where there are spidersâ€. However, this differs from the City of Stirling official meaning of the name Karrinyup on the website. It states the word means “the place where Kangaroos drinkâ€, possibly because it sounds much more pleasant and doesn’t inspire the fear that spiders often do. It was this contrary interpretation of the word ‘Karrinyup’ which provided the final spark of inspiration I needed for this composition. You see, when you listen to the opening, the theme jumps up and down through the horns, and represents the Kangaroo – Yongka. Whilst as the fanfare continues, you will notice the second theme – the crawling strings represent the spider – Kar. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did creating it. About the piece'To The Moon' takes inspiration from the Earth's Moon, the beauty andmajesty of the celestial body and all it encompasses. It also charts the energy and excitement surrounding the space race and the ultimate goal to get to the Moon! The piece helps to explore extended tonalities and considers a different approach to Orchestral writing and performance choreography.This piece can be performed by any number of performers, ideally, traditional Orchestral numbers work well but experimentation with larger/fewer numbers on various parts within the different 'ensembles' can produce exciting results.Performance directionsThe ideal performing conditions for this piece are that the orchestra are split into 4 'ensembles' as indicated in the score. Each ensemble is grouped in a way that means all ensembles are pointing to the centre (see diagram 1 below). The audience should similarly be positioned around the room in a circle behinf each of the ensembles. Therefore, an ideal focal point for this performance would be a visual representation of the Moon in the centre of the room, ideally lit in some way. Representations of the Moon may take the form of a 3D lit representation (potentially made, perhaps a local Art project) or a projected representation onto the floor of the performance space. TheMoon should be of sufficient size as to not be lost in the space and careful planning should be done to ensure optimal visual effect. The role of the conductor during the performance ideally would be minimal, perhaps sat in one of the ensembles providing minimal direction. However, due to the capabilities of the performers, the conductor may have to take a more active role in the performance. When taken on its own, his music shows much of the artistry of Guiseppi Verdi; whose scores he edited, but with his own personal style!This overture is rarely played, but has a fabulous selection of themes and orchestral colour so typical of Sullivan - it deserves to be performed more often. The score has been edited to co-ordinate articulations and dynamics which have been missed in the hand-written parts.Print the parts double-sided, including title pages where present, and the page turns will work.Enjoy!

When composer Jerry Goldsmith was asked to write the score for MacArthur, people were surprised that he accepted the project because they wondered what he would have left to say, musically, after Patton. Jerry‘s feeling was that MacArthur was a totally different person, and it would be a real challenge to write about another military figure but do it in a different manner. He said “it‘s much more flamboyant in a different sort of way, and it was an interesting task“. Patton enjoyed resounding critical praise and has since been elevated to the designation of a classic. The film won Academy Awards for nearly all of its major players, with composer Jerry Goldsmith being an unfortunate exception. Goldsmith had already written many scores for World War II topics in his short mainstream career, but none would prove as memorable in any part as the march from Patton, a concert hall staple for the composer throughout his career. Despite the dominance of this theme and the fact that only roughly thirty minutes of music was employed in such a long picture, the effect of his score on the film is far more complicated than many people may realize. While the famous march, with all its bravado from brass, flutes, and snare, easily represents the identity of the character and war, Goldsmith’s work for the film actually spends more time dwelling on the deeper meanings of life that the general himself explored.Created from the original manuscript, this release offers a rare opportunity to study film music in its authentic, original orchestration and arrangement.
