ATON is a stage play written by Manfred Strolz and Otmar Rützler which represents Egypt in the time of the Pharoahs but seen through the eyes of modern theatre directors and actors. The modern scenes are spoken but the Egyptian scenes require music, so Manfred and Otmar asked me to write the music for these. The music is composed for various forces as the play progresses, from the full orchestra (woodwind, strings, harp, piano, timpani) and choir down to more intimate moments with single voice or duets, flute and classical guitar or with single voice and bassoon. For each section the pdf file contains score and parts and the sound sample is an electronic preview. As I write 16 sections have been composed, but more are to come - please just search for Aton in due course for the full picture. The first performance is planned to take place in the Landestheater in Innsbruck during 2015 ================= ATON ist ein Bühnenstück von Manfred Strolz and Otmar Rützler geschrieben, das Ägypten von der Pharaonenzeit vorstellt aber auch duch die Augen moderner Direktoren und Schauspieler sieht. Die modernen Szenen sind gesprochen aber die ägyptischen Szenen brauchen Musik, deshalb haben mich Manfred und Otmar gebeten die Musik dafür zu schreiben. Die Musik ist für verschiedene Kräfte während des Stückes komponiert: vom vollen Orchester (Holzbläser, Streicher, Harfe, Klavier, Timpani) und Chor bis zu intimeren Augenblicken mit Solostimme (oder Duetten) mit Flöte und klassicher Gitarre oder Solostimme mit Fagott. Im Augenblick gibt es 16 Kompositionen, aber es wird noch mehr geben - bitte suche später nach Aton für das vollständige Bild. Item Number: S0.616185 The composition of La Vega completed in 1897. It is interesting to note that Albeniz almost completely abandoned the composition of piano works after La Vega, although his fame was mainly focused on the works for this instrument. Although La Vega was planned as part of a cycle of melodies written on poems by his patron Money-Coutts and was therefore used as an independent piece of an orchestra suite, this work was originally composed for piano. According to the autographed dating found on the last page of the manuscript, Albeniz finished La Vega at first on January 26, 1897 in Auteuil, in a Paris neighborhood. In the course of the following weeks, decided to make profound changes. He deleted the last five pages of the Vega, added six at the beginning and composed a different ending of seven more pages. This revision ended in Paris on February 14, 1897, and Albeniz wrote down on the last page: La Alhambra, symphonic suite on poems by F. B. Money-Coutts: nº 1: La Vega. La Vega is an evocation of the Granada plains on the edge of the city, a musical reflection, as the composer put it, contemplated from the Alhambra Palace. Claude Debussy, on hearing Albeniz play the piece, enthusiastically told him of his wish to immediately go and discover Granada.

The orchestral parts of the Third Symphony (2000, revised 2023), an ambitious, modernist/neoclassical composition for orchestra and chorus with four vocal soloists. It may represent a search for harmony within and/or without and is a huge, subtle variations form on a theme that appears clearly and in full only in the Finale.The chromatic, first movement (Andante maestoso) begins mysteriously with A's in the unaccompanied violins, like a tuning or a seed of what is to come. These A's are adorned with oscillations which gradually become wider leaps until they reach the fifth (as in the beginning of the future full theme), and the other instruments join gradually. The mood is dark, tragic, pensive, and somehow abstract, as the music wanders in an almost improvisatory manner through chromatic modes and goes crescendo-decrescendo back again to the bare, cryptic A's.The energetic second movement (Allegro) is an enormous scherzo toying with the second melodic cell of the full theme, a descending tetrachord. The parenthetic structure of the finale is a holographic reflection of the general form of the whole symphony, alternating gentle, contemplative episodes with exuberant or majestic fugatos. Towards the ending, ecstatic, big, complex quartal chords suggest the limits of perception and language (on the final stanzas from Dante's Paradise), until the sonority becomes again more and more rarefied and the journey returns to its starting point from the first movement: the 'tuning' A's in the violins.Total duration: 54 min. The score, parts and vocal score of the Third Symphony (2000, revised 2023), an ambitious, modernist/neoclassical composition for orchestra and chorus with four vocal soloists. It may represent a search for harmony within and/or without and is a huge, subtle variations form on a theme that appears clearly and in full only in the Finale. The chromatic, first movement (Andante maestoso) begins mysteriously with A's in the unaccompanied violins, like a tuning or a seed of what is to come. These A's are adorned with oscillations which gradually become wider leaps until they reach the fifth (as in the beginning of the future full theme), and the other instruments join gradually. The mood is dark, tragic, pensive, and somehow abstract, as the music wanders in an almost improvisatory manner through chromatic modes and goes crescendo-decrescendo back again to the bare, cryptic A's. Nocturne for Orchestra began as a piece that would celebrate the 400th Anniversary of Galileo’s telescope while using a musical language that would be in keeping with a program of American music. I thought that The Unanswered Question by Ives, and the emotional depth and poignancy of much of Copland’s music, would be a perfect compliment to a tribute to Galileo. But then two friends passed away and the piece turned into a tribute to them, with the night sky and the Unanswered Questions that surround us creating a consoling environment for this effort. The songlike themes of Nocturne grow out of my journey from mourning the premature deaths of my friends to celebrating their rich and vibrant lives. Section A is the dreamlike introductory section, B is a transition to the song-like section, and C is where the songlike themes are stated outright. D is a development section, E is an interruption - returning to the dreamlike music, F merges the dream music with the thematic material, G is the expressive high point of the piece and is articulated by the violin and cello solos. The remaining sections are intended to convey freedom and celebration. This is followed by a brief coda.

Repetitions is a solo for found objects and The Repeater Orchestra, a free program online that mimics live sounds in real time, and plays them back in a stereo/spacial environment. It has non-standard notation in a way, with single bits written on a staff arranged in an order to play them. The player is given freedom to repeat things as many times as they want, making the piece possible to play in under 2 minutes, to well into the dozens. In my interpretation (shown in the YouTube video), it takes around 11 minutes. This piece is about making a soundscape of repeated patterns, and overlapping and combining them to create one conglomerate. Instruments include: planks of wood, a bucket of water, ceramic tiles, a glass bottle with marbles in it, a can, and a separate glass bottle for hitting. Implements include: a 2 paintbrush, a ring, rubber xylophone mallets, and oak dowel rods with Moleskin wrapped on one tip. Note, I apologize for the feedback near the first third of the recording, I had to adjust the settings, and did not hear the feedback as hard as the computer did!
