The American Seasons (violin solo part – violin and string orchestra) MO148BViolin Solo Part (score and parts available)Music by Mark O’Connor30 pages - 38:00 minutes in length The American Seasons(Seasons Of An American Life)The American Seasons (Seasons Of An American Life) is a concerto for Violin And Chamber Orchestra. Composed in 1999, the music celebrates the various stages of an American life at the waking of the 21st century. Constructed in four movements and representing four stages of life, birth, adolescence, maturity and old age, the music also pays homage to Shakespeare's Seasons Of Man His acts being seven ages, incorporated throughout the work.Spring introduces the ideas of birth and infancy. After the principal theme has been stated, there is a violin cadenza encountering all twelve major keys and a 13/8 time signature representing the ancient golden ratio. These elements recall birth with all the possibilities a new life offers. Ending the movement, the principal theme is repeated with more complexity... as if posing life's questions.Summer represents the excitement and bravado of youthful adolescence and young adulthood. For the style of this movement I use a happy-go-lucky Blues voice which melds into Swing. I identify swing rhythm in all of 20th century American music culture as a common thread that runs through Ragtime through Rock and Roll on to Rap. Swing means testing the waters and pushing the envelope for lovers and soldiers.Fall is the slow movement symbolizing the wisdom of maturity. It is a peaceful theme with nostalgic strokes. It is a time for sincere reflection and enjoying ones accomplishments in life.Winter embodies the complexities and knowledge of an older person and that of a dying person. The movement begins with the principal them from Spring, but with a dissonance that emanates from a lifetime full of emotions and responsibilities. In the middle of the movement is a transition to an old world. I use my personal ancestry from Ireland as a foundation from which to rediscover one's lineage and explore the meaning and value of a cultural legacy. The exploration evolves into a four- and five-part fugue with a reel, jig, air, countered bass and the motif from the principal theme. All these elements, dances and melodies appear simultaneously and converge to form a unique insight to life's consequences from a historical perspective. Following the fugue, the principal theme finds its way back in. It sounds much as it did at birth. In the end, the solo violin cadenza carries the last earthly breaths before the violin and orchestra once again join in harmony to focus on a new life being transformed somewhere else. Life's four seasons in perpetuity. One Sows for the Benefit of Another Age - Orchestra
Orchestra
Full Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1002835 Composed by Kyle Vander…

Full Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1002835 Composed by Kyle Vanderburg. Contemporary. Score and parts. 112 pages. NoteForge #5793397. Published by NoteForge (A0.1002835). I started writing what would become One Sows for the Benefit of Another Age in 2013, as I was sketching ideas for what became a piano trio. I liked what I had created, but two things became evident: The piece was destined to be for orchestra, and I was not good enough as a composer to finish it. Over the next seven years, I kept returning to this piece in my spare time, adding some sections, tweaking some others, and at some point I gained the experience to finish it. But the trade-off was that I no longer had the time. At least until Spring of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic put most of my projects on hold, and I was able to return to--and finish--the work. The title came last. My ideas while I was writing centered around Americana (I was listening to a lot of Copland, Barber, and Ives) and infusing my history and experience in the Ozarks and on the plains. I knew I wanted to make use of the idea of illumination, of dawn. I wanted to start in the shadows and end aglow. The darkness was such a defining feature that my working title was Aegri Somnia, loosely translated from Latin as troubled dreams. As I continued working, I realized that the focus wasn't the darkness--the focus was the change.I discuss change a lot in my teaching. Students often see change as transformative change--massive, radical, sweeping change, like winning the lottery, or winning an audition. Transformative change is easy--it usually involves hoping for a situation or a Deus ex Machina, and if it happens, it benefits us immediately. Iterative change, however--small, repeated, incremental change that builds up over time--is hard. An extra half-hour of work every day, a little extra contributed to savings every month, these changes add up over time and become significant. But it requires intention and action, and it doesn't reap immediate benefits. It may not end up benefitting us at all.One Sows changes iteratively. It starts from a dark place, but is sprinkled with seeds of hope. A descending motive introduced in the violins brings us out of the darkness, albeit slowly. The idea spreads, develops, and eventually becomes part of a new idea, a new paradigm, that takes over.In searching for a title, I came across Serit ut alteri saeclo prosit, North Dakota's Latin state motto, whose English translation is the title of this work. It's a recent addition to the North Dakota statutes, but a timeless message. Our work isn't finished yet.

Clarinet Concerto ... Sounds of the Islands (2003) for clarinet solo and orchestra

Full Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.869365 Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary,Latin,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 102 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #29655. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869365). Instrumentation: 2222-4321-2perc-pf-strings. When Andrea Bates, executive director of the Brockton Symphony Orchestra, first told me that the Brockton Symphony had commissioned me to write a new work to be premiered in 2003-2004, I immediately thought that since its music director, Jonathan Cohler, is a marvelous clarinetist I would be most attracted to the idea of writing a clarinet concerto for the occasion. Both Andrea and Jonathan were very receptive and enthusiastic about my idea. Andrea also told me that the commissioned work should somehow bring to attention the diverse cultures of the recent immigrants that have settled in the city of Brockton. So in the spring of 2003 I came down to Brockton for a meeting to which Andrea had invited representative members of these new communities. Three showed up: Maria Evora-Rosa, Rick Marrero and Fred Fontaine. Andrea had asked them to bring recordings of the music from their countries for me to listen to. There were CDs of very exciting and fun music from Cape Verde, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. After spending months listening to the music from these countries, all of them islands in the Atlantic or the Caribbean, I slowly began to get a sense of the beauty and the magic of the musical style and language of each place, each individual island. The end result is a three-movement work for clarinet and orchestra. Unlike the traditional Concerto form which is Fast-Slow-Fast, this work begins with something slow. A fast number follows as a second movement; and then, after a short, slow interlude, another fast number appears. The first movement is my adaptation of the morna of Cape Verde – slow, melancholy and sad. The diva of the morna is Cesaria Evora. Her singing brings to mind a fusion between the African blues and the Portuguese fado. The second movement is my take on the merengue as performed by the inimitable Xavier Cugat. It is dance music through and through!!! The third movement is also a dance number: the ever-popular music from Haiti, the reggae. And in order to give some contrast between the two dance numbers, I added a slow chorale for clarinet and strings that serves as a prelude before the dancing begins in the final movement. I envision the chorale as a little church music before the people go out and dance the night away. Throughout the entire work, the solo clarinet is the principal voice … singing, dancing, and cavorting!!! Gotta dance!!! Have fun and enjoy the music!!! I surely did as I was working on it ….

Instrumentation: 3222-4231-timp-2perc-hp-chorus-strings Program note:It has been a wonderful two years of thinking, learning and working on my Continental Harmony Project with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. It is a rare occasion that a composer in the 21st century would receive a commission to write a musical work of such scale: a 40-minute piece for symphony orchestra, 200-plus chorus and a ballet company. At the Bangor Public Library I found some wonderful evocative 19th century texts for the chorus about the city of Bangor and its environs: the Penobscot River, Mt. Ktaadn, the logging industry, the native American culture, etc. At times I felt overwhelmed, but most of the times I was exuberant and quite inspired by the music that came forth in the process. The premiere is less than a month away, and I am looking forward to it. Susan Jonason, Executive Director of the Bangor Symphony, has made the occasion a very public one: a free concert on a Saturday evening! I hope the audience will go home humming the tunes from the work as they walk into the crisp, cool Bangor night.Formally the work is in five movements. The first, third and fifth movements are choral, and the two in between are orchestral. In the premiere, the Robinson Ballet will dance in the orchestral movements. The first movement is about the Penobscot River from winter to spring. The melting of the ice is a harbinger of things to come: warmer weather, for instance; but it has also contributed to a lot of flooding in the city of Bangor and its surroundings. The second movement is a waltz, a grand 19th century ballroom waltz for the ladies of the rich lumber barons. They come to the ball showing off their latest hats and gowns from London, Paris and Milan. The third movement is about the woods and the people who work in them. Thoreau’s text about Mt. Ktaadn is full of awesome thoughts about how nature is beautiful, yet unkind to man. It is followed by a J.G. Whittier lyric entitled The Logger’s Boast. The original song had twenty stanzas to it. I whittled it down to five. I don’t know what the original song sounded like, so I made up my own version of a lumberjack’s drinking song. The fourth movement is a wild, drunken polka. After a long week of working in the woods the lumbermen come back to the city and spend all their earnings on booze, women and gambling. And they dance the night away …The last movement begins with a funeral march for Joe Attien, a native American who was Thoreau’s guide when he came up here in the 1900’s. The work ends with a rousing march, a centennial hymn to the city of Bangor. God bless our city Bangor, now! On this its birthday morn …NB: The two ballet movements, II. La Valse and IV. Drunken Polka, are optional.

Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869355). Instrumentation: solo alto saxophone & 2222-4231-perc-drumset-strings. Program note. Maestro Max Hobart called me in the spring of 2009 and told me to check out this young jazz phenom on the saxophone named Grace Kelly. I said OK, that’s cool. That summer we went to the Regatta Bar in Harvard Square to hear her play with her band, and I was duly impressed by her musicality, soulfulness and chops. Max asked if I would be interested in writing a concerto for her and the Wellesley Symphony. I said, Sure. It sounds like a great idea. One of the most cherished jazz records in my vast collection is the collaboration between Stan Getz and Eddie Sauter entitled Focus. Eddie, who used to be an arranger for the Benny Goodman Band in the forties, went on to create the Sauter Finegan Band in the early fifties. The band was one of the first to include the piccolo, oboe, bassoon, harp, celesta, French horn, tuba, xylophone, glockenspiel, chimes, timpani, and other unusual symphonic instruments in the standard big band format of trumpets, trombones, saxophones and rhythm section of piano, bass and drum set. On the album Focus Eddie Sauter composed seven tracks of music for string orchestra and rhythm section. Stan Getz did not have a written part - he just improvised over the written music. If you are not familiar with this recording, then you will do yourself a huge favor if you go find it and add it to your own CD collection. The music is phenomenal and Stan is on top of his game, soaring above the strings with endless melodic inventions, flights of imagination and whimsy! It is one of those desert island CDs one should not be without. When I emailed Grace about this project and mentioned Stan Getz’s Focus, she said, It’s one of my favorite albums. So, we got off on a positive note immediately. My work, Focus on Grace … Concerto for Jazz Saxophone and Orchestra, is very much inspired both by the Stan Getz album and by the performances I heard of Grace and her band. The first movement is based on a funk groove in D minor: Grace’s part is initially written-out but she improvises freely in the coda. The second movement is a boss nova: as in the Stan Getz album, Grace does not have a written part but improvises over a set of chord changes provided by the orchestra. The third and last movement is an Afro-Cuban groove in six-eight: Grace has a written melody at first but soon launches into improvisation on a 12-bar blues in F. She ends the concerto in a free cadenza to show off her virtuosity and saxophone chops. ENJOY!!!

Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869350). Instrumentation: trumpet solo and 2222-4231-timp-2perc-strings. Over the years I have written at least ten orchestral works for Max Hobart including three symphonies and four concertos for saxophone, violin, oboe and cello, respectively. So I was thrilled when Max asked me to write a concerto for trumpet virtuoso Stephen Burns and the Boston Civic Symphony Orchestra. I am familiar with Stephen Burns’ work as a piccolo trumpet player doing concertos from the baroque period. The color of his sound was already in my head. Stephen and I got together in the spring of 2104 and we discussed the project in some detail. We immediately agreed that the work would be in three movements. Each movement would feature a different trumpet: the trumpet in C for the first, the flugelhorn for the second and the piccolo for the last. I began work on the concerto at the end of August and finished it three months later. The work as mentioned earlier is in three movements: 1. Heraldic Beast … Allegro. 2. Bossa Nova in 7/4 … Adagio. 3. Perpetuo Moto … Presto! Enjoy!!!

Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.OMS142). 9 x 12 in inches. The Keweenaw Peninsula is located in the northwestern part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is surrounded by Lake Superior on the west, north and east sides. From the late 1800's through the early 1960's copper was mined there. There are still remnants of multiple mines and hoists scattered about the hilly country side. This area can get around 180 of snow each year and winters can be long yet beautiful. There are waterfalls scattered in the hilly country side that are quite beautiful in the spring and summer.I attended Michigan Technological University from 2002-2006 which is located in Houghton, Michigan. Houghton is called the Gateway to the Keweenaw. I composed this piece to paint a picture of the Keweenaw with its waterfalls, hilly country, the sun rising and setting over Lake Superior, and the winter splendor. Because many people on the Keweenaw Peninsula are of Finnish descent, I incorporated the Finnish National Anthem into the melodic material.

Enchanted Landscapes, A Symphonic Poem for symphony orchestra

Full Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.944033 Composed by Ofer Ben-Amots. Contemporary. Score and parts. 50 pages. The Composer's Own Press #4612747. Published by The Composer's Own Press (A0.944033). Composer’s Note: Enchanted Landscapes was commissioned by the Colorado Springs Philharmonic in recognition of the Association’s 90th Anniversary. Inspired by the theme of America the Beautiful, I decided to portray the actual beauty of the land, rather than to use Katharine Lee Bates and Samuel Ward's famous song as a musical reference. Thus, Enchanted Landscapes was composed as a single-movement Symphonic Poem, which transforms various visual elements of our magical views into an audible experience. The main melody is vast; Spanning over 30 measures, it conveys the feeling of spaciousness. Then, the same long melody repeats in a different, higher key. The middle part of the composition presents a fanfare-like theme, which builds up through both dynamics and polyphonic means. This section, dominated mainly by the brass and wind instruments, brings in a sense of drama, mystery, and purple mountain majesties. Finally, the use of Melodica sound in the otherwise traditional orchestration, adds a feeling of nostalgia and longing to the pure and proud landscape that watches upon us constantly, and connects us with the earth, with nature, and with ourselves.
