Published by Benjamin Sajo (A0.1018922). Fugue: Wear Pearls and Smile is, on the outset, a fast, rambunctious adventure for many voices playing at the same time. It was conceived as a pairing for the equally vivacious second symphony of Ludwig van Beethovenâ€“his 250th birthday is this yearâ€“but can stand on its own as one of my hardest, most challenging works to cook up.This piece is dedicated to those forced to appear positive when internally theyâ€™re falling apart. The title is inspired by a quote thatâ€™s been with me for a while, Why is it that men can be bastards and women must wear pearls and smile? by Lynn Hecht Schafren, the celebrated American jurist famous for campaigning for gender equity in courts. Iâ€™m taking the quote out of its initial context, but the power of that quote, for me, exemplifies how hard it is to maintain a sense of emotional decorum and dignity when youâ€™re authentically a hot mess. And whatâ€™s more of a musical hot mess than a fugue?There are two realities to this piece. Iâ€™ll quote Dmitri Shostakovich, from his autobiography: The rejoicing is forced, created under threat, [â€¦] Itâ€™s as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, â€˜Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing,â€™ and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering â€˜Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing.â€™ On the one hand, it is insincere happiness, cloying perhaps. But the other truth, Iâ€™ll quote Oscar Hammerstein II, from The King and I: While shivering in my shoes / I strike a careless pose / And whistle a happy tune / And no one ever knows, / I'm afraid. I forced myself, against all impulses of my current being, to forge happiness. This piece, with its origin being a mental puzzle (fugues are puzzles), it became a construct where I could lift myself up and regain a sense of purpose. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings , with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

The word Ide means go in archaic Portuguese, and in this tense suggests an imperatively dictated order. This caught my attention while reading the New Testament and noticed that Jesus used this imperative a few times with his disciples. This order was sometimes for his disciples to be like sheep among wolves, no matter the social or physical consequences of what they were about to do, other times the commendment was simply to spread love and grace around the world. For the New Testament, man's relationship with his Creator thus suggests a decision to be made by man himself to go beyond what can be seen as reality, as if human beings had to have the courage to go without fear beyond its limits, and only then could it experience a transcendent spiritual reality. A faith that involves the attitude of man, who by pure grace manages, if he so chooses, to go beyond. This piece was composed in 2013 and the recorded in 2015. This video was lost but now I've found it...

This question is followed by a statement. And when the question is asked again, it is again followed by this statement, and the whole development of this work happens through increasingly precise paraphrases to which new ideas are added which are presented like a lyrical development and like a constant amplification. All gestures, all attacks or caresses of breath and lips multiply only with the aim of lending more richness and more substance as well as more reason to this initial question and statement. With the weight given to the more eloquent deductions and developments, the discourse comes to an end, while returning, as if in conclusion, again and again to this short and final statement from the beginning. Thus, the impulse and breath of the flute is expressed â€“ eloquent and passionate â€“ between paraphrase, exposition and clarification.

In Stoic philosophy Pneuma is the concept of the breath of life, a mixture of the elements air (in motion) and fire (as warmth). Originating among Greek medical writers who locate human vitality in the breath, pneuma for the Stoics is the active, generative principle that organizes both the individual and the cosmos. In its highest form, the pneuma constitutes the human soul (psychÃª), which is a fragment of the pneuma that is the soul of God. As a force that structures matter, it exists even in inanimate objects. In the Bible, in the New and Old Testament this concept is personified, as if the action of the Creator who is capable of bringing something nonexistent to life were not just a force, a phenomenon, but had a consciousness of its own.
