It was one of many I made for the Seras Brass Quintet which I helped form while studying at the University of Liverpool. In those days the brass quintet repertoire was limited and, to an impecunious student, expensive. Consequently we made many of our own arrangements and this one became a popular concert item – often used as an encore.We didn’t have Derby mutes (I still don’t!) but we managed to change the straight mute successfully enough. If it’s a problem just cover the bell with the left hand – the main thing is to create a different timbre, after all.

The Holberg Suite, Op. 40, more properly From Holberg's Time (Norwegian: Fra Holbergs tid), subtitled Suite in olden style (Norwegian: Suite i gammel stil), is a suite of five movements based on eighteenth-century dance forms, written by Edvard Grieg in 1884 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Dano-Norwegian humanist playwright Ludvig Holberg (1684–1754).It exemplifies nineteenth-century music which makes use of musical styles and forms from the preceding century. Although not as famous as Grieg's incidental music from Peer Gynt, which is itself usually performed as arranged in a pair of suites, many critics regard the works as of equal merit.The Holberg Suite was originally composed for the piano, but a year later was adapted by Grieg himself for string orchestra. The suite consists of an introduction and a set of dances. It is an early essay in neoclassicism, an attempt to echo as much as was known in Grieg's time of the music of Holberg's era.This arrangement for brass is designed to make the suite playable but enjoyable to perform - it will challenge your brass players.

The Holberg Suite, Op. 40, more properly From Holberg's Time (Norwegian: Fra Holbergs tid, German: Aus Holbergs Zeit), subtitled Suite in olden style (Norwegian: Suite i gammel stil, German: Suite im alten Stil), is a suite of five movements based on eighteenth century dance forms, written by Edvard Grieg in 1884 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Danish-Norwegian humanist playwright Ludvig Holberg. It exemplifies nineteenth century music which makes use of musical styles and forms from the preceding century. The movements of the suite are: Praeludium (Allegro vivace) Sarabande (Andante) Gavotte (Allegretto) Air (Andante religioso) Rigaudon (Allegro con brio) The Holberg Suite was originally composed for the piano, but a year later was adapted for string orchestra. The suite consists of an introduction and a set of dances. It is a charming, early essay in neo-classicism, an attempt to echo as much as was known in Grieg's time of the music of Holberg's era. This edition is an arrangement for a traditional Brass Band, and the music works very well for the band.

The Versatile Brass Classical CollectionThis is the Full Brass Band ArrangementI did this arrangement originally for Versatile Brass, which we played on a number of concerts. This is not an arrangement for the 'faint of heart'. It is difficult, because the piece is difficult... but what a magnificent piece of music it is. According to legend, Death appears at midnight every year on Halloween. Death calls forth the dead from their graves to dance for him while he plays his fiddle (here represented by the trumpets). His skeletons dance for him until the rooster crows at dawn, when they must return to their graves until the next year.The original piece opens with a playing a single note, D, played twelve times on the Harp, in my arrangement this is played by Tuba and Tubular Bell (the twelve strokes of midnight). The trumpet enters playing the tritone, which was known as the diabolus in musica (the Devil in music). Out of interest in the original, the solo violin plays this, during the Medieval and Baroque eras, consisting of an A and an Eâ™-in an example of scordatura tuning, the violinist's E string was actually been tuned down to an Eâ™ to create the dissonant tritone., no need for such alterations here.

This piece is inspired by the following stanza from Paradise Lost: Whence and what art thou, execrable shape, That dar'st, though grim and terrible, advance Thy miscreated front athwart my way To yonder gates? Through them I mean to pass, That be assured, without leave asked of thee. Retire; or taste thy folly, and learn by proof, Hell-born, not to contend with spirits of Heaven. Here we see Lucifer, even after he has fallen so far, his wings bound by adamantine chains, still view himself with pride for being filled with the light of Heaven. He challenges Death, thinking himself superior to the foul (and more powerful) being. This piece explores the arrogance and emotions that I associate with the work as a whole, but particularly in Lucifer’s ego. The MP3 given here is just the render off of staffpad. Enjoy! Ten years later, when this Howard and Emerson tune was published, those cylinders were referred to as records, and Arthur Collins made the first recording of Hello! Ma Baby. The lyrics tell the tale of a guy who has a girlfriend he knows only through the telephone. This was one of the first songs to deal with the telephone (that medium, too, being still pretty new). The chorus was kicked back into the spotlight in 1955 when a certain movie frog sang and danced his way across a Warner Brothers cartoon background. The current version used the 1899 sheet music as its source, but is a completely original arrangement that enhances the ragtime feel of the music. This is an infectious piece that is fun to play and a toe-tapper for the audience. Completed in 2016, this arrangement’s performance time runs about 3 minutes, 20 seconds. The gavotte is a French dance that was popular during that time. Gavotte and Variation was originally written for keyboard (in Handel's day, it would most likely have been played on the harpsichord). This is a transcription for brass quartet (2 Bb trumpets, F horn and trombone) of another arrangement that I wrote for my middle school students, originally written for mixed woodwind quartet.
