It is a story about a coastal orphan girl who lives alone in a palm grove by the sea. Composers such as Manuel M. Ponce (1882-1948), the founder of Mexican musical nationalism, often incorporated the melodies of traditional folksongs into their music (12 Canciones mexicanas – 1913). This arrangement is for a 4-part brass ensemble of 2 trumpets and 2 trombones. Performance time: 4:15. Expand the awareness of Mexican Art Song repertoire through performance.

The greatest church in the greatest city of Europe. Freedom of intellectual thought. A Venetian School of composers at the forefront of musical innovation. The printing press and musical publishing. A Doge (Chief Magistrate or Duke) willing to spend, and spend big, on musical pomp and ceremony. A dearth of wealth and money to fund the grandest celebrations. He was the leading Italian composer and organist in Venice at its greatest heights at the chasm between the end of the Renaissance and the beginning of the Baroque period in music. Presented here is a Canzona published around 1615 for 6 brass. A variety of substitute parts are also included to handle the trombone parts with French horns and tubas. A great work that draws from Gabrieli’s many styles. The piece starts with a song like tune that is repeated throughout. Each variation is separated by a 3/4 dance-like chanson repeated throughout. The final cadence is classic Gabrieli with its grand finale. A Gabrieli instrumental ensemble work that provides listeners with a variety of common Gabrieli touches all in one piece without requiring a lot of musical forces.

Versatile Brass 'Old Time Favourites' CollectionLeaning on a Lamp-post is a popular song written by Noel Gay and best known in the version by George Formby.It was first performed in the 1937 film Feather Your Nest, in contrasting styles by Val Rosing and George Formby. The film's plot revolves around Formby, a gramophone record technician, hearing Rosing record the song but then breaking the master disc and substituting his own voice. Formby recorded the song for Regal Zonophone Records on 5 September 1937, and it became one of his most popular and best-remembered songs. The sheet music for the song was published by Cinephonic Music Co Ltd. of London, at two shillings.A version by Herman's Hermits, credited as Leaning on the Lamp Post, reached No. 9 on the US Hot 100 in 1966. Songs of the Warrior, a Brass Quintet in three movements, utilizes thematic material derived from a twelve-tone row, presented in three contrasting styles. While the piece stands on its own as absolute music following traditional formal structures, the titles of each movement do suggest a setting befitting the mood or atmosphere evoked by the music. I. The Cannon’s Mouth Following a slightly modified version of the classical sonata allegro form, this movement presents the thematic material in a freely atonal setting, Much use is made of variations of ancient two note war-horn calls, which would command soldiers to advance into direct combat with an enemy. II. Amidst the Fallen The second movement evokes images of the aftermath of battle and the horrors left on the field of war. Dynamic and rhythmic elements in the music produce a classic arch form. Melodic and harmonic structures are developed throughout the movement. III. Revelry A complete departure in style from the previous movements, Revelry features upbeat modal harmony and foot-tapping rhythms. Thematic material borrowed from the earlier movements is transformed to conform to the desired atmosphere. The form of the movement is best described as a hybrid rondo and variations. The light-hearted mood is perhaps a reflection of the joy found when a soldier returns to his home. This quintet presents three stylistically distinct movements, yet all are based on the same thematic sources. The first movement is somewhat cerebral and demands much virtuosity from the performers. The second is darker, with some almost lyrical melodic lines. The final movement is nothing if not bombastic. All-in-all, Songs of the Warrior provides a little something for everyone, from Berlioz to Schoenberg, with a little Bernstein on the side.

It was allegedly written for a 5-shilling bet in Stalybridge on January 30, 1912 and performed the next night at the local music hall. Now commonly called It’s a Long Way to Tipperary, the original printed music calls it It’s a Long, Long Way to Tipperary. It became popular among soldiers in the First World War and is remembered as a song of World War I. Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit-Bag, and Smile, Smile, Smile is the full name of the World War I marching song, published in 1915 in London. It was written by Welsh songwriters, George Henry Powell under the pseudonym of George Asaf, and set to music by his brother Felix Powell. It was featured in the American show Her Soldier Boy, which opened in December 1916. This skillful arrangement by Jari Villanueva captures the flavor of the original tunes and would be a great selection commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War I. The arrangement includes the verses of the tunes and the British bugle call Fall In. This clever arrangement culminates in a rousing section that superimposes both tunes. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767276). As part of my continuing project to transcribe Monteverdi's madrigals onto winds, here is the 6th book. In this book we see a much greater development towards dramatic representation. In a way, this book is divisible into two Scenes with a number of single items in between. The vocal lines are all much more complex and we can also see the beginnings of monodic writing appear in the semi-recit sections of some of the songs. Also clearly developing are delineations of the voices into soloists and chorus. Several songs in this book are almost akin to arias, with clear soloistic writing for the higher voices (Cantus/Tenor). The first four songs form a kind of introductory 'scena', which Monteverdi calls Lamento d'Arianna. A little later, there is a set of 6 songs which he grouped together under the title Sestina. This song immediately precedes Sestina and is another wooing song to a girl named Florida. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres. Monteverdi uses some very close dissonances to describe death and release.

Presented here is an early Canzona published around 1615 for 6 brass. A variety of substitute parts are also included to handle the trumpet and trombone parts with French horns and tubas. The piece starts with a short song-like melody and rhythm that is then repeated with many variations throughout. A nice early introduction to the Gabrieli instrumental ensemble works, published shortly after his death, for a smaller single ensemble.

The French horn also has some 'pearly' moments, starting with the opening introduction soaring high in the register. The trumpets also enjoy the melody during the chorus which features them playing together in octaves. Some moments in the trombone and horn part may be a little high for some players, but these will work just as well taken down an octave where necessary.This is a terrific song, with rich harmonies and lots of melodic interest.
