It was allegedly written for a 5-shilling bet in Stalybridge on January 30, 1912 and performed the next night at the local music hall. Now commonly called It’s a Long Way to Tipperary, the original printed music calls it It’s a Long, Long Way to Tipperary. It became popular among soldiers in the First World War and is remembered as a song of World War I. Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit-Bag, and Smile, Smile, Smile is the full name of the World War I marching song, published in 1915 in London. It was written by Welsh songwriters, George Henry Powell under the pseudonym of George Asaf, and set to music by his brother Felix Powell. It was featured in the American show Her Soldier Boy, which opened in December 1916. This skillful arrangement by Jari Villanueva captures the flavor of the original tunes and would be a great selection commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War I. The arrangement includes the verses of the tunes and the British bugle call Fall In. This clever arrangement culminates in a rousing section that superimposes both tunes. Included is a Full Score and parts for Brass Ensemble. Also included are substitute parts for Eb Horns and Treble Clef Baritone Horn A retired member of the United States Air Force Band where he served on the Music Production staff (as well as a trumpeter and bugler) and a student of Bill Holcombe, Jari Villanueva continues writing for different ensembles. His arrangements are played by bands, brass ensembles and brass quintets all over the country including many military groups. Blaze was written by Jim Fieldhouse as a personal composition challenge during the coronavirus lockdown of 2020. The piece came about from a desire to contribute to the contemporary euphonium repertoire and a need for some material for the composer to practice while the UK's brass bands were on pause due to Covid-19. This piece means business! It starts with a bang and is definitely not for the faint hearted. Much of the material centres around repeated semiquavers and requires razor sharp precision to bring it off the page. The relentless melodic lines are laid over funk influenced grooves and driving bass riffs. Playing with good time and feel are really important for switching between the more traditional brass band style and the all out jazz funk sections. While the euphonium 1 part is predominantly a high register part and euphonium 4 is very much the bass of the quartet, all four parts present their own challenges of virtuosic technique, range and stamina.Parts included: Full Score. With concerts, recitals and wedding performances in mind, this arrangement will be popular with players and audiences alike. The Prelude has an irrevocable sense of momentum, only sated with a short cadenza like flourish and a final bout of arpeggios. The Fugue allows all four voices to develop and flourish after the forced regimentation of the Prelude. The difficulty level for the Prelude is about ABRSM grade 5-6, and the Fugue about grade 5-8 with the outside parts taking the more technical moments, although optional alternatives are scored where range appropriate to lower difficulty if desired. The PDF is 33 pages in length (portrait A4) and includes a full score and parts for flexible brass quartet (2 Cornets/Trumpets, Tenor Horn/F Horn/Baritone/Trombone and Euphonium/BassTrombone).
