Versatile Brass 'Old Time Favourites' CollectionLeaning on a Lamp-post is a popular song written by Noel Gay and best known in the version by George Formby.It was first performed in the 1937 film Feather Your Nest, in contrasting styles by Val Rosing and George Formby. The film's plot revolves around Formby, a gramophone record technician, hearing Rosing record the song but then breaking the master disc and substituting his own voice. Formby recorded the song for Regal Zonophone Records on 5 September 1937, and it became one of his most popular and best-remembered songs. The sheet music for the song was published by Cinephonic Music Co Ltd. of London, at two shillings.A version by Herman's Hermits, credited as Leaning on the Lamp Post, reached No. 9 on the US Hot 100 in 1966. Versatile Brass 'Old Time Favourites' CollectionWe're Going to Hang out the Washing on the Siegfried Line is a popular song by Ulster songwriter Jimmy Kennedy, written whilst he was a Captain in the British Expeditionary Force during the early stages of the Second World War, with music by Michael Carr. It was first published in 1939The Siegfried Line was a chain of fortifications along Germany's Western border, analogous to the Maginot Line in France.At the first big wartime variety concert organized by ENSA, which was broadcast by the BBC from RAF Hendon in North London on 17 October 1939, Adelaide Hall performed the song accompanied by Mantovani and his orchestra. A rare newsreel of this concert exists, and the footage is thought to be the earliest surviving film of a performer singing the song.The song was used as a morale-booster during the war, particularly up to and during the Battle of France.This is a simple arrangement of the song with a vocal line added if required.

The script was written by Gordon Wellesley and J. B. Priestley.Considered by many to be British music hall star Gracie Fields' finest vehicle, this film was written for her by leading novelist J.B. Priestley. In this morale-boosting depression movie, set in the industrial north of England, Fields stars as a resourceful, determined working class heroine, laid off from her job in a clothing mill, who has to seek work in the seaside resort of Blackpool. This gives her the opportunity both to fall into many misadventures and, of course, to sing.The decision to film on location brings the film a life and immediacy all too absent from most films of the period. The film provides us with a snapshot of life in a seaside resort in the 1930s. The final scene of the millworkers returning to the re-opened mill while Fields leads them in the rousing title song has become an almost iconic film cliché.This is a simple arrangement of the title song with the lead line on solo Cornet. The Versatile Brass Classical CollectionThis is the Full Brass Band ArrangementI did this arrangement originally for Versatile Brass, which we played on a number of concerts. This is not an arrangement for the 'faint of heart'. It is difficult, because the piece is difficult... but what a magnificent piece of music it is. According to legend, Death appears at midnight every year on Halloween. Death calls forth the dead from their graves to dance for him while he plays his fiddle (here represented by the trumpets). His skeletons dance for him until the rooster crows at dawn, when they must return to their graves until the next year.The original piece opens with a playing a single note, D, played twelve times on the Harp, in my arrangement this is played by Tuba and Tubular Bell (the twelve strokes of midnight). The trumpet enters playing the tritone, which was known as the diabolus in musica (the Devil in music). Out of interest in the original, the solo violin plays this, during the Medieval and Baroque eras, consisting of an A and an Eâ™-in an example of scordatura tuning, the violinist's E string was actually been tuned down to an Eâ™ to create the dissonant tritone., no need for such alterations here.
