Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767313). At long last I have nearly finished the 7th book. This book has posed some issues as it is such complex music it is almost impossible to cut it down to 5 parts while maintaining its integrity. As a result, some songs will be in 6 or more parts. Vorrei baciarti has fairly simple harmonies, so I was able to keep it to 5 parts. Vorrei baciarti is a duet for two contraltos, taken by parts 2 and 3 in this setting. The title translate as I want to kiss you, so typifies the kind of love songs that Monteverdi was writing. The poet is singing these words to his lover Phyllis, so we can probably assume that he is Amyntas. In the poem he is deciding where to plant his first kiss. The seventh book is quite a change from the earlier ones. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.) Once again, these songs are exquisitely crafted and travel well onto brass.

In this book we see a much greater development towards dramatic representation. In a way, this book is divisible into two Scenes with a number of single items in between. The vocal lines are all much more complex and we can also see the beginnings of monodic writing appear in the semi-recit sections of some of the songs. Also clearly developing are delineations of the voices into soloists and chorus. Several songs in this book are almost akin to arias, with clear soloistic writing for the higher voices (Cantus/Tenor). The first four songs form a kind of introductory 'scena', which Monteverdi calls Lamento d'Arianna. A little later, there is a set of 6 songs which he grouped together under the title Sestina. The final song from Lamento d'Arianna tanslates as Ah! Who does not even answer! Ah! Who is deaf to my laments (pleas) Another song of a young man being turned down by his lover. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres. Monteverdi uses some very close dissonances to describe death and release.

This book has posed some issues as it is such complex music it is almost impossible to cut it down to 5 parts while maintaining its integrity. As a result, some songs will be in 6 or more parts. O viva fiamma has fairly simple harmonies, so I was able to reduce it to 5 parts.O viva fiamma is a duet for two sopranos, The title translates as O living flame and is a passionate - and quite vivid - description of the act of love. All the o - o - o-ing is quite graphic! Good job the words are missing from this version!The seventh book is quite a change from the earlier ones. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.)Once again, these songs are exquisitely crafted and travel well onto brass.

In this book we see a much greater development towards dramatic representation. In a way, this book is divisible into two Scenes with a number of single items in between. The vocal lines are all much more complex and we can also see the beginnings of monodic writing appear in the semi-recit sections of some of the songs. Also clearly developing are delineations of the voices into soloists and chorus. Several songs in this book are almost akin to arias, with clear soloistic writing for the higher voices (Cantus/Tenor). The first four songs form a kind of introductory scena, which Monteverdi calls Lamento d'Arianna. There is another set of 6 forming a substantial scena which Monteverdi labelled Sestina. No 11 is a stand-alone song describing a young man, Alceo, unwilling to leave his lover (Lydia) to go on a long journey. This is much more in the character of a solo song for the tenor, with interjections from the 'chorus'. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres. Monteverdi uses some very close dissonances to describe death and release.

This song, No 10 starts with the line Here Tirsi laughed and wriggled under the two(twin?) stars of the beautiful Clorinda I think you get the picture! We can see plenty of musical laughing and wriggling in the music with dotted rhythms and semiquaver runs. The top two voices are Clorinda (doing a fair amount of wriggling herself) while the bottom two take the part of Tirsi. There are places where all four voices give vent to an exclamation and where, presumably, the two lovers had to stop for breath! The original incorporates a very basic continuo part, which I have shared between the resting voices. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres.

The Fifth book of madrigals starts to see much more development towards operatic style writing, with more songs being strung together to form scenas and with the addition of accompaniment on instruments. Some of these songs can be written by incorporating the accompaniment into the parts for those instruments which are resting, some will require more than a quintet. Certainly as we get into the next three books, reduction to a quintet will become increasingly more difficult, if not impossible.Cruda Amarilli is a very evocative song, describing the cruelty sometimes inflicted upon each other by lovers. Cruel Amarillis is the translation of the first line and the fp in each part's entry emphasises that cruelty, along with the increased use of dissonance.
