This work for trombone and organ is part of the 2024 Suite for Trombone and Organ, which is geared toward the younger, less experienced player, with works that can be performed at church services and other occasions. Dido's Lament, from Purcell's opera Dido and Aeneas is a lyrical, somber piece, giving the younger player the chance to develop phrasing and legato playing. The emotional mood of this makes it perfect during reflective times of a service, especially during the Lenten season. The range is one that a typical high school player (or advanced middle schooler) could play, with rhythms well within the reach of players at that level. The solo part is well-supported by the organ part, with hopes that rehearsals can be minimal in putting this together for performance. There are two other movements to this 2024 Suite, both available on this site as well. Please give that young musician the chance to shine! Also included is a treble clef part that could be played by trumpet, treble clef baritone, or tenor sax.

Key: E flat major.The American musical patrons Mildred and Robert Wood Bliss were considering which distinguished composer to commission to create a work in celebration of their 30th wedding anniversary in 1938. The couple had made the acquaintance of Igor Stravinsky in April the preceding year at the première of his ballet Jeu de Cartes in New York and had subsequently invited the composer to their country home ’Dumbarton Oaks’ in Washington D.C. to talk about a new composition. Stravinsky only just managed to complete the work in time for the anniversary celebrations: its date of completion was also the date of its first performance. For his classically styled three-movement work, he selected the title Concerto in E flat, adding the subtitle Dumbarton Oaks as a dedication. The structure of the work references the concerto grosso: it features a soloist ensemble which unites in the tutti sequences but also plays in concertino groups during the solo episodes. Broken chordal structures characterise the central movement whereas the outer movements are distinguished through their use of fugato. Dumbarton Oaks went on to become one of Stravinsky’s most successful works, performed widely and delighting Mildred Bliss so much that she immediately issued another commission, for the Symphony in C. Its composer’s very public commitment to American cultural life helped pave the way for Stravinsky’s emigration to the USA in 1945. As early as 1952 Leif Thybo created an arrangement for organ which Stravinsky probably did not know at the time of his life.Inspired by Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, Igor Stravinsky’s three-movement concerto ‘Dumbarton Oaks’ is a musical monument to two major American patrons: Mildred and Robert Woods Bliss commissioned this work to mark the 30th anniversary of their wedding. It was performed for the first time at a private celebration at their country house Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C. under the direction of Nadia Boulanger in 1938. As early as 1952 Leif Thybo created an arrangement for organ which Stravinsky probably did not know at the time of his life.

Grieg did not write any music for the organ, but some of his short compositions for piano in his multi-opus series of Lyric Pieces can be successfully adapted for performance on the pipe organ. I have arranged several of them, employing 3-stave scores, along with indications for what manuals to play on, and suggestions for registration changes. My arrangements reveal, I think, that Grieg's piano pieces take on new dimensions with the organ's variety of timbres and wide dynamic range. They all would serve well on a recital program and some could be used in church services as well. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other arrangements for organ in my Grieg Transcription Series. Four-part suite The Seasons for narrator and orchestra Lithuanian composer Kazys Daugėla created on the basis of K. Donelaitis poem The Seasons plots and the most famous artist Vytautas Kazimieras Jonynas (1907-1997) woodcut illustrations. These Donelaitis poem The Seasons illustrations have become classics of Lithuanian art. Composer created his paintings of the suite using native Lithuania Minor folk song melodies. Some of them are written almost 200 years ago. Most songs used are from Christian Bartsch prepared and published by Lithuanian folk songs Song of the votes. If you do not doubt that the song’s soul is in the melody, it should also be true, that the song is understood correctly only when we sing or listen to it – so believed Ch. Bartsch. He could not possibly foresee that the songs that sounded at his time will be wiped out in parallel with the East Prussian population. But after all, maybe he did predict? Therefore, he was rescuing them. The ancient epics and worldview associate The Seasons with cyclical idea of time, which is expressed by the view of The Sun’s path in the sky. The main hero of this musical work is The Sun and the diversity of nature, life and work associated with it. In the Eternal Circle we born, age, die - everything repeats, nothing new happens. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q22586). Franz Liszt composed his lyrical-meditative organ fantasia on the Ave Maria von Arcadelt in Rome in 1863. In contrast to his major virtuoso works, this charming genre piece can even be easily played on smaller (double-manual) instruments, even without swell-organ and reeds. The 'Liszt organ' at the village church of Denstedt near Weimar, which was built by the Peternell brothers in 1859/60 and has survived in its original state, may be used as an example. It did not become known until in 1927 that the Ave Maria attributed to Jakob Arcadelt (around 1505-1568) was a revised version by the composer Pierre-Louis-Philippe Dietsch (1808–1865) who used the melody of Arcadelt's chanson Nous voyons que les hommes which he then harmonized into his own Romantic four-part choral setting and to which he added the sacred text as a contrafactum. Our separate edition wants to make this rather 'poetic', yet quite easy-to-play organ work without any major technical difficulties accessible to a large circle of interested people.

Inspired by this outstanding and unique composition, I had the idea, some 20 years ago, to create a piece of music based on a theme resembling a litany, too (without pretending, of course, that I would be able to equal in any way Alain's masterful quality as a composer). The main theme was notated quickly, but in the years since then, many variants and secondary themes that came to my mind did not satisfy me. Thus, it took a very long time and many ample interruptions before in this summer, with some new ideas everything fell into place as if by magic.There also exists a version of this piece for saxophone and organ (op. 3a).

This is one of a suite of organ pieces composed by David W Solomons performed by David Carlston Williams for a CD in June 2015 The suggested order for this suite is: 1. Passacaglia: based on an ostinato passage in 3 time. The idea behind the passacaglia relates to the origin of the word, it is basically a gentle stroll down the street (pasar la calle in Spanish, which was converted into Passacaglia in Italian) 2. Dorina: a descriptive piece in Dorian mode based on a song about a cat, from the aptly named village of Chattevoix, who stalks, but never catches, a little bird. 3. Playtime: also about a cat, the composer's own cat who is playful and rushes around the house but occasionally stopping to pummel the soft furnishings. 4. Early Evening in Camden Town: a more serious and sad piece - in 3-3-2 time. It is an evocation of the poor folk in Camden and their dreams of what could be, if only….. It was originally a song, which the composer wrote when he was living in London, based on a poem by fellow Londoner Sandra Erös The streets are part of a toy town, waiting to be played with…. 5. The Bishop's Dance: a curious and comical piece in 11 time (3, 3, 3, 2). It comes from the legend of Robin Hood, in which Robin meets the bishop of Hereford, who had hoped to get the better of him, but Robin prevails and forces him to dance. The clumsy attempts of the ungainly Bishop to obey Robin's commands cause great merriment among the merry men To quote our vicar, Rev Barbara, after the recital For me music paints a picture, and, for that, I have got this picture of someone going for a stroll in their village and then they came across a very old cat wandering down the street imaging it could catch birds but never catching them. And then it would lie down for a sleep and dream of the days when it was a kitten.... It was a very reflective programme and turns our mind about What for the Autumn, what do we need to do next.. it really did fit in with the mood of the year, as we turn towards building up the programme for next year... So thank you, it gave us time to reflect in a very beautiful manner.... It is the 10th movement of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. It was written during Bach's first year in Leipzig, Germany. Bach did not compose the melody. That was written by Johann Schop. Bach only harmonized and orchestrated Schop's melody. Written in the French toccata style of the Romantic period, this piece is sure to excite and energize audiences anywhere (as it already has done so in organ concerts around the world)!Funny fact: this piece was once announced in an organ program before it was played, and someone in the audience misheard it as the Wildflower Toccata, soon becoming very confused when it did not sound like beautiful wildflowers in any way. Needless to say, after the concert they had to ask the performer for clafication that it was indeed meant to be the Wildfire Toccata.

This Psalm 75 Concerto was first improvised during a video tutorial about improvising a postlude on any hymn tune. The tutorial was requested by Nils van Velzen who was studying this psalm at the time. When I published this tutorial Rien Schalkwijk requested that I would transcribe it into a score notation for organ solo. I did and dedicated it to him. This piece is based on an optimistic Baroque style Ritornello technique where recurring fragment alternates with psalm phrases. It would serve as a delightful postlude to a church service or it could be played during a recital too.
