Published by Merula Music (A0.1151441). A contrapuntal fantasia based on the famous Advent melody Personent Hodie. After its initial presentation in the manuals, a fragment of accompanying counterpoint is turned into the subject for a lengthy fugue, while the motifs of the melody are continually hinted at. Eventually, the melody returns triumphantly and the ring bells ring refrain is heard for the first time, after which a fanfare leads to an opportunity for an improvised cadenza. The recording was made by Mark Swinton, organist of St Mary's, Warwick, who also gave the première performance on Advent Sunday, 2022.

Biblischer Hintergrund des Textes ist die Erzählung von Jakobs Traum von der Himmelsleiter im 1. Buch Mose. Jakob hat sich auf einem Stein schlafen gelegt und erfährt durch die Traumvision Stärkung in schwerer Bedrängnis. It is based on the 1841 poem Nearer, My God, to Thee by the English poet Sarah Flower Adams. The poem was set to music with various melodies, the best known being Bethany by Lowell Mason. The chant is often sung or played at funerals, especially in the English-speaking world, and has been on everyone's lips since the film Titanic. The biblical background of the text is the story of Jacob's dream of the ladder to heaven in Genesis. Jacob has gone to sleep on a stone and finds strength in his severe distress through the dream vision. He calls the place Bet-El (Bethel), house of God (Gen 28:10-19 EU).

This famous and beloved old song, written by Charles Austin Miles in 1912, is often sung at funerals and was inspired by John, Chapter 20 in the Bible where Mary goes to the Garden Easter morning and finds the tomb of Jesus empty. Mary is distraught but then she hears a voice and realizes it is the voice of Jesus and not the gardener. Upon many requests, the arranger, Kathleen Holyoak, has written this as an organ solo, having previously published it for vocal solo and instrumental versions. This is one title every organist needs to include in their library or organ music. The words are inspiring and can be printed in a program as follows:I come to the garden alonewhile the dew is still on the roses,and the voice I hear falling on my earthe Son of God discloses.And he walks with me, and he talks with me,and He tells me I am his own;and the joy we share as we tarry there,none other has ever known.

This three movement suite is based on the famous Christmas hymn tune Vom Himmel Hoch, most known as From Heaven Above to Earth I Come. Each movement is based on a line from one of the verses:1. Welcome to Earth, O Noble Guest (a regal setting of the tune)2. Ah, Dearest Jesus, Holy Child (a peaceful setting)3. My Heart for Very Joy Doth Leap (a joyful setting)The three works could work together as one suite, or used separately with 1 as a prelude, 2 as an offertory, and 3 as a postlude. It was written as a dedication to Australian organist James Flores for his continued promotion of new organ works. It was written and recorded on a two manual instrument. It will hopefully add a wonderful touch to your Christmas or Advent services! Each movement is also available separately.

He was born in Speinshart, some 150 km from Nuremberg, but spent most of his life in Augsburg, where he worked as cathedral organist for two years. His only surviving music is a 1693 collection, Ars Magna Consoni et Dissoni, which includes toccatas, Magnificat versets and variations in south German style. Speth was born in Speinshart, Bavaria, to teacher Heinrich Speth and his wife Margareta (née Vichtl). Past scholars established that Speth must have received music lessons from the abbot of the Premonstratensian monastery at Speinshart, one Dominikus Lieblein, however, this has recently been disproven. Nothing is known about his life before 1692, when he applied for the position of organist of Augsburg Cathedral. The application, which contained Speth's compositions, was accepted, and he was appointed organist on 4 November 1692. The music he supplied with the application was published the next year in Augsburg as Ars magna Consoni et Dissoni. In the files of the cathedral administration there is a note from 1705 showing that Speth had also to work in the office of the cathedral chapter. The exact date of Speth's death is unknown, but there is a document that shows that in 1719, he still lived with his wife and a maidservant in Augsburg. The composer's only surviving work is the collection published in 1693 in Augsburg, Ars magna Consoni et Dissoni. The title may be a reference to Athanasius Kircher's famous book, Musurgia universalis, sive ars magna consoni et dissoni (1650). An early description of the work was included by Johann Gottfried Walther in his Musikalisches Lexicon; Walther claimed Speth only compiled the pieces but did not compose. This hypothesis is now generally considered false. Ars Magna contains music intended for organ or clavichord: 10 toccatas (subtitled Musicalische Blumen-Felder), 8 Magnificat settings, and three variation sets. The music has clearly traceable Italian influences, with direct borrowings: one of the variation sets is built on a theme by Bernardo Pasquini, there is also a passage from Bernardo Storace in the Spangioletta variation set, and a verset by Alessandro Poglietti (quinti toni no. 3). The influence of contemporary southern organists is also apparent, particularly that of Georg Muffat and Johann Caspar Ferdinand Fischer. The toccatas are unusually short for the genre; most consist of three (toccata-fugue-toccata) sections. There are some interesting features such as dynamic indications in Toccata quarta. The Magnificat settings are, like similar pieces by Johann Kaspar Kerll and others, short versets for alternatim practice.

It's also very popular in Lithuania and is known as Gul šiandieną. I created this piece for the first-year student of our Vilnius University Unda Maris organ studio Kotryna Kuliešiūtė, so that she could perform it in our upcoming Christmas concert. The structure of the piece is very simple - the right hand features the hymn tune in F major, the left hand has ostinato figure which is repeated every 7 measures. The pedal part is very easy - it has only 5 long pedal points - on F, D, Bb, C and F. I recorded it as a demonstration for Kotryna during one of our organ studio rehearsals at VU St. John's church. On the occasion of the quincentenary of Reformation Day in 2017, the composer Enjott Schneider thoroughly studied Martin Luther the individual and all his contradictions. The result is a brilliant, demanding organ symphony which is perfect for concerts on the subject of Reformation and Martin Luther. The composer describes the five movements of the symphony as follows: '1st movement: Wir glauben all an einen Gott with its quintuplet-like beginning is very Gregorian in style, outlining the range of Lutheran emotionalism between the Middle Ages and the modern era. The irrationality of faith ultimately has priority over any thought and evidence. At the beginning of the movement, sounds of knocking on wood remind of the nailing of the Ninety-Five Theses to the doors of churches in Wittenberg. The chorale melody sometimes hides with an almost rough medieval saltarello, referring to Luther's robustness and vitality with which he knew to carry away even common people. 2nd movement: In 1530, the electoral prince of Saxony presented to Luther at Coburg Castle the golden signet ring with the Luther rose which became the symbol of his theology of grace. A white heart with black cross is fixed on a five-petalled rose. To him, white is the colour of angels and ghosts, black stands for the pain of crucification: The just shall live by faith, but by faith in the Crucified. But the fact that the rose and the heart are the dominating symbols shows how Catholic Marian piety remained an ingredient of Luther's spirituality throughout his life. In line with the dominant five-petal structure of the rose, this movement was composed, to a large extent, in accordance with the floating, lyrical rhythm in 5/8 time. 3rd movement: The omnipresence of death and dying – from the plague and war to the never-ending dangers of daily life – was an essential part of the world view of that time. Fears ensued that might heighten into the grotesque, e.g. in the pictures of Hieronymus Bosch. The Danse macabre was a popular motif in those years. Luther's chorale Mitten wir im Leben sind / mit dem Tod umfangen from 1524 (Enchiridion from Erfurt) is based on the Gregorian chant Media vita in morte sumus created in France around 750 and, with its idea of transience, inspired a simplistic air. 4th movement: The famous confession delivered at the Diet of Worms in 1521, I stand here and can say no more. God help me. Amen, are not Luther's words but the version later used as text for a pamphlet. However, it represents quite plainly the straightforwardness and inevitability of his mission. Musically, it was made into a perpetuum mobile, i.e. a dogged, ostinato and never-ending musical air. 5th movement: The Mighty Fortress, on the other hand, is one of the great symbols of Martin Luther which, with its shining C major key, embodies the Protestant ideology and willful nature of the Reformation unlike any other song. Heinrich Heine called it the Marseille anthem of the Reformation, Friedrich Engels the Marseillaise of the Peasants' Wars. This disputability is not thought through to the end but rather interrupted: With a jubilant birdcall version of the melody, the finale shows a rather chamber-music-like side of the ideals of freedom of Christians.'.
