The Finale from Sonata In C For Organ is suitable for recital use, and may be used for teaching students on techniques of incorporating thematic materials from other movements or other works to their compositions.This last movement opens with a slow and quiet registration, depicting an anticipation of some good event to come. One may associate this section (measure 1 to 51) with the expectation of Christ’s resurrection from the dead. The theme opens with a motivic variation of bugle theme that was stated in the first movement of the sonata. The exposition part of this work begins at measure 52, where the TRSCH motive repeats continuously in the pedal part against the main theme. Other thematic materials from previous movements occur in this movement. From measure 111 to 118, the first theme from the first movement appears against the main theme of this movement, and the former one is restated at bar 182 to 185. The second theme from the scherzo movement appears against the main theme of this movement at bar 120 to 123. The final section of the piece that commences from measure 195 to 211 contains the TRSCH motive, stated in the pedal part; the motive, originally written in quarter-note notation, is augmented rhythmically to whole note notation, giving one an impression of triumphant splendor. What brings the sonata to a triumphant close is that the TRSCH motive is stated three times, using the full organ registration. I hope that you enjoy this work.

Published by Felicity Mazur-Park (A0.1250208). The chorale prelude begins with the chorale (Jesu, du mein liebstes Leben) harmonized in four-parts. I changed the harmonization, so it differs from J.S. Bach’s chorale setting. My harmonization resists modulating to major keys (B flat major and F major) and instead uses chromatic chords for dramatic effect. This harmonic landscape results in an overall darker mood.  The middle section and heart of the composition features a gigue-like motive which begins in G minor but gradually transitions into chromaticism. At the height of the chromaticism, there are pedal solos interrupted by loud, accented chords in the manuals. As the chromaticism and dissonance build the music moves away from the G tonal center. The return of “G†is delayed until the final statement of the chorale. At the end, the chorale returns combined with the gigue-like motive. The return is dramatic and flamboyant. The chorale prelude finishes with a dramatic pedal solo followed by a subdued penultimate phrase. The loudest registration of the work is reserved for the final phrase.

Toccata & Fugue for Organ (2018)Composed by Aris AntoniadesRunning time: approx. 7' 50'' Writing for Organ always seemed like a very distant dream for me. Born and raised in Cyprus, an isolated Mediterranean island-state in Europe where the religious musical tradition (Greek Orthodox Christianity) relies solely on voices (no instruments used during services), I never had access to an Organ. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, there’s not a single Organ in my entire country. The first time I ever saw one was during my college years in New York – and it was love at first sight! I was fascinated by its sound capabilities, its mechanism, and the sheer skill required to play it. You can, therefore, understand how thrilled I am to have had the opportunity to write for this great instrument. I would like to sincerely thank Shannon Murphy and Austin Philemon for believing in my work, and for commissioning this piece. Both the Toccata and the Fugue are based on the same (but altered) motivic materials. The Toccata is a piece that was inspired by the idea that life is a continuous marathon, represented by the ‘mechanical’ sixteenth-note ostinato figure which never stops – despite the contrapuntal obstacles that are thrown within its path. The motive, however, does transform and adapt along the way, in order to make the best of the situation. The Fugue, on the other hand, represents the cerebral aspect of life: the concept of choices. The ostinato motive of the Toccata has now morphed into the subject of the Fugue, which will be attacked by some violent chromatic enemies. Beginning quietly, introspectively, on manuals alone, at first employing a 5-note, then a 4-note motive, hinting at the first four measures of the hymn tune, slowing building to the finale which begins fortissimo, with grandeur, now echoing the first four measures of the hymn tune's refrain. Here the pedal finally enters, encompassing merely three different pitches (A, D and E). The piece ends with a strong flourish on an E6(add 9) chord, adding a 32' reed in the pedal. My Prelude on the hymn tune Revive Us Again (We Praise Thee O God) was conceived for a three-manual organ and has a somewhat challenging pedal part. The harmonic idiom reflects the influence of certain 20th century techniques (such as building chords by fourths), which create a sound world that, while still tonal, embraces somewhat greater dissonance than traditional practice allowed. Modern ears though are accustomed to, and even enjoy, such sounds. The introduction and interludes are based upon a rhythmic motive taken from the hymn tune, which itself is treated canonically at one point. In another instance, even two different phrases are vertically combined. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.
