Duration: 8 - 16 minutes, 8 pp. Description: The graphic nature of this set of short pieces is designed to elicit cooperative creativity from the performer. With the exception of the last piece — the Chorale — the unorthodox notation is negotiable and open to alteration in consideration of the performer’s inclination and the instrument’s possibilities. The performer may take a highly faithful approach to realizing the score, or consider the Études as models for improvisation. Études II and IV, for example, ask the performer to continue to improvise in like manner, yet map out a clear design for the music. The degree of freedom is considerably more constrained as regards the final Chorale. The pitches, rhythm, length, form are much more specific in this case, although the performer does have great latitude (within suggested guidelines) in choosing registration. The music is generally scored on only two staves. Nonetheless, three manuals are requested for the realization of the Chorale. Pedal keyboard is recommended but not essential. The Pedal is particularly useful in realizing Études I and IV. Wedges and/or weights are necessary for Études III, and may be a useful substitute for the Pedal in Études I and IV. NO RECORDING OF THIS PIECE EXISTS; BE THE FIRST TO RECORD THIS!

The tune appears twice - first in imitative counterpoint between the hands on one manual and the pedals. The second time, the tune is soloed in the left hand with a recommended reed stop. The piece ends on a decrescendo for a quiet finish, making it useful as either a meditative piece or a quiet postlude. Unlike many patriotic hymns, the text of God of Our Fathers keeps the focus first on God over country, something to consider when preparing this piece for a religious service. Ideal for organists at the early intermediate to intermediate level.

Published by Christopher McWilliams (A0.1008284). Note from the composer: This work was originally called Impromptu Variations on Amazing Grace. In 2016, I wrote half the variations and improvised the remaining ones. By 2019, I was determined to compose the rest so that they could be learned by other organists. I also changed the title to Six Settings for Organ on Amazing Grace because I mostly varied the accompaniments rather than the theme. What sets this work apart from other composers' versions is its key, G-flat major. Although it is rarely used in organ literature, it is a personal favorite key of mine, and I consider it a good challenge for the performing artist. Not only is the key unusual, but I have also incorporated some original idioms including a flutter figure on a light stop against the theme on a chime stop and a mysterious sounding introduction including chromatic scales. Aside from these original ideas, I have borrowed techniques from the works of Dave Brubeck, Chopin and Bach. .

This beautiful, sublime music transfers wonderfully to the organ! It's a great vehicle for an organ with a quiet solo string underpinned by a gently rippling accompaniment of flute tone. The dramatic and emotional middle section sounds fantastic played on organ tone up to Mixtures. The piece then subsides back down to the gorgeous serenity of the original registration. A great piece for demonstrating an organ, or in a recital, programme, or for contemplation during church services. On a techical level it's very accessible for the average player (and this edition includes helpful fingering) so it could be used for students as a very productive and rewarding addition to their repertoire.

Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika was written as a prayer for the freedom and prosperity Africa during a time when most of the continent was dominated by European colonial powers. It later became the anthem of several African countries, and during the presidency of Nelson Mandela, it was folded into the South African national anthem. The song had been banned during the apartheid years because of its association with the ANC. It was the South African counterpart to the role played by We Shall Overcome in the Civil Rights struggle in the U.S. These gentle. reflective variations for organ are appropriate at any time of year, but especially during Black History Month. I wrote this piece to honor the African immigrant families in the church I serve as music director.

On the occasion of the quincentenary of Reformation Day in 2017, the composer Enjott Schneider thoroughly studied Martin Luther the individual and all his contradictions. The result is a brilliant, demanding organ symphony which is perfect for concerts on the subject of Reformation and Martin Luther. The composer describes the five movements of the symphony as follows: '1st movement: Wir glauben all an einen Gott with its quintuplet-like beginning is very Gregorian in style, outlining the range of Lutheran emotionalism between the Middle Ages and the modern era. The irrationality of faith ultimately has priority over any thought and evidence. At the beginning of the movement, sounds of knocking on wood remind of the nailing of the Ninety-Five Theses to the doors of churches in Wittenberg. The chorale melody sometimes hides with an almost rough medieval saltarello, referring to Luther's robustness and vitality with which he knew to carry away even common people. 2nd movement: In 1530, the electoral prince of Saxony presented to Luther at Coburg Castle the golden signet ring with the Luther rose which became the symbol of his theology of grace. A white heart with black cross is fixed on a five-petalled rose. To him, white is the colour of angels and ghosts, black stands for the pain of crucification: The just shall live by faith, but by faith in the Crucified. But the fact that the rose and the heart are the dominating symbols shows how Catholic Marian piety remained an ingredient of Luther's spirituality throughout his life. In line with the dominant five-petal structure of the rose, this movement was composed, to a large extent, in accordance with the floating, lyrical rhythm in 5/8 time. 3rd movement: The omnipresence of death and dying – from the plague and war to the never-ending dangers of daily life – was an essential part of the world view of that time. Fears ensued that might heighten into the grotesque, e.g. in the pictures of Hieronymus Bosch. The Danse macabre was a popular motif in those years. Luther's chorale Mitten wir im Leben sind / mit dem Tod umfangen from 1524 (Enchiridion from Erfurt) is based on the Gregorian chant Media vita in morte sumus created in France around 750 and, with its idea of transience, inspired a simplistic air. 4th movement: The famous confession delivered at the Diet of Worms in 1521, I stand here and can say no more. God help me. Amen, are not Luther's words but the version later used as text for a pamphlet. However, it represents quite plainly the straightforwardness and inevitability of his mission. Musically, it was made into a perpetuum mobile, i.e. a dogged, ostinato and never-ending musical air. 5th movement: The Mighty Fortress, on the other hand, is one of the great symbols of Martin Luther which, with its shining C major key, embodies the Protestant ideology and willful nature of the Reformation unlike any other song. Heinrich Heine called it the Marseille anthem of the Reformation, Friedrich Engels the Marseillaise of the Peasants' Wars. This disputability is not thought through to the end but rather interrupted: With a jubilant birdcall version of the melody, the finale shows a rather chamber-music-like side of the ideals of freedom of Christians.'.

In the fall of 2013 my friend and colleague, Paulius Grigonis who is the organist at St Joseph church here in Vilnius was preparing to play a recital at Vilnius Cathedral around Christmas time. He approached me asking for advice about the pieces he could be playing.I offered him to compose a set of 6 variations on the famous Christmas tune Adeste fideles and he agreed too much hesitation (too bad).I started working on the composition but got stuck at the end of the 5th variation. I used major and minor chords only. My goal was to create something colorful and modern and yet understandable to the listener.Because of these simple chords the harmonies are very clear and transparent. What makes it sound modern though is that I avoid traditional chordal progressions of the perfect fourth and perfect fifth. This would imply tonic-dominant, dominant-tonic, tonic-subdominant, subdominant-tonic relationship.But I didn't want this. I wanted to surprise my audience and my friend Paulius. So I chose all kinds of progressions - minor and major seconds, minor and major thirds, even a tritone to keep it fresh.However, the result was too difficult to play for Paulius on a short notice and I got side-tracked with other projects. Although the idea of completing the variations never left me.So last weekend I sat down and added the last variation with a CODA.I hope you'll enjoy this piece which is dedicated to Paulius.8 pages, PDF score. Passacaglia (2000-2012) for Organ - 6 minutes This piece exists in versions for organ (this one - the original version in 2000) and orchestra (performed by Bristol University Symphony Orchestra under the baton of John Pickard in 2001), and finally a piano duet version completed in 2012. The theme is based on the ground bass from Bach’s stonking Passacaglia in C minor for organ. However, the implied harmonies of Bach’s original ground bass are treated to some twisted harmonies – where each chord is altered using a system of harmonic substitution - swapping each chord implication for a newly chosen one (Cm=C, Fm=F#, G=A, Dm=A¨, Eb=F and on it goes around the 12 chromatic notes). Each key therefore has a ‘dominant’ and ‘subdominant’ that are not the actual chords V and IV in that key, so the traditional cadences and chord relationships are supplanted by 12 individual 3-chord relationships – one set of three chords for each of the 12 (now almost exclusively major) keys. In an attempt to recreate the pulls of the traditional tonic-dominant-subdominant relationships, each key then also has a particular mode/scale with particular added notes that are designed to recreate the sense of moving away from and back towards the home chord of that key. This results in a lot of rich added harmonies and some idiomatic voice-leading. Bach’s original theme in Cm is: C G - E¨ F - G A¨ - F G - D E¨ - B C - F G - C, and in the opening statement of the ground bass this has become: C A - E F# - A B¨ - F# A - D# E - C# C - F# A - C. There are then 21 variations which modulate through a range of keys, during which the ground bass is constantly re-adjusted to fit the new harmonic areas. It starts in C major, then goes through ‘closely’ related keys (eg A major and A¨ major), and then back to C in variations 6, 9 and 11. This kind of arch then happens again but going through more distant keys before returning to C in variations 18, 19 and the final climactic variation 21. Leaving aside the structural and tonal nuts and bolts, my aim was to compose a piece that attempts to recapture some of the nobility and beauty of Bach's Passacaglia, with rich added note harmonies, and exuding an exuberant joy.
