Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1001565). This is an arrangement for 2-4 octave handbell choir of If I Had a Hammer.This protest song was written in 1950 in support of the progressive movement. The song was written by Pete Seeger and Lee Hays for the folk group The Weavers. It was made famous by the group Peter, Paul, and Mary and the singer Trini Lopez whose versions both charted in the top 10 on the charts in the 1960s.This version is arranged for 2-4 octave handbell choir and makes heavy use of mallets for most of the piece. There are some very quick changes between using mallets and normal ringing and there are a lot of syncopated rhythms throughout the piece. These challenges make this arrangement ideal for smaller bell choirs that are still at a intermediate or higher playing ability. Even though the song is not specifically intended for church services, the message of the song can be incorporated into quite a variety of religious themes.The arrangement is in the key of C with no accidentals. Walz (A0.767673). This piece could utilize up to 12 members, but usually many members play two bells, so it could be a piece for six ringers. We Gather Together is one of my favorite hymns, and I'm sure Maestro would agree that it has a lovely melody. Key of D, two pages, no key changes. Performance time is 1: 25 if you take the repeat, shorter without it. PRACTICE HINT:Â The dotted quarter note in the melody may be unfamiliar to some beginning handbell ringers. Some clapping exercises with the melody might be helpful. In addition, the second layer (those notes with stems going down) does not play the dotted rhythm. It would be wise to have those ringers practice their smooth, consistent lines before pairing them with the more syncopated melody.

When played with 12 ringers, the piece is rated at Level 5.Filled with interesting and contrasting rhythms and techniques, this arrangement is fun to play and thoroughly enjoyable to hear. Each range of the bells is featured in different ways at different times in the piece. The middle bells have a lot of rhythm and technique changes which are not very difficult and will keep the ringers smiling. The super bass bells sometimes play the part of the timpani or strong brass, and at other times have a counter melody all their own. The high bells may carry the melody (often doubled in octaves), but that same melody is often echoed in the other bell ranges as well just a beat or two later.The arranger recommends that ringers listen to an orchestral recording of this composition. It is arranged in the same key, and (if you can) could be rehearsed together.  If you have enough hands available, the arranger provides suggestions for an added triangle part.This arrangement is dedicated to Bay Bells, an advanced community handbell choir that the arranger Cheryl (Sutton) Baker (also known as Cheryl Woldseth) directed from 1986 to 1997. Under her leadership, Bay Bells and the subset Bay Bells Ensemble performed throughout California, Oregon, Nevada, and Hawaii, plus they toured Indonesia in 1996 and also performed at the 1996 International Handbell Symposium in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Bay Bells premiered this arrangement at the 1997 National AGEHR Ringers Conference in Sacramento, California.Performance time• 8 minutes, 10 seconds.

The slow, somber opening section, in F minor, is very effective when rung entirely on handchimes. At measure 22 the key changes to F major, the tempo changes to Allegro guisto, and if handchimes were used for the opening section, the handbells are used from here to the end of the piece. To aid in interpretation of the music, the choral text is provided on page 8.
