'When I Survey the Wondrous Cross' is an excellent choice for any time in the Christian Liturgical year, but is especially appropriate for Lent and Holy Week. This arrangement uses a basic 2 octave set of handbells, tone chimes, hand chimes or belle plates. Beginning simply and building to a triumphant finish, it is three and a half minutes of inspiring music! This piece uses 22 bells, and would work for a small intermediate ensemble (8 or 9 member group who can switch out bells during key changes) or would be an excellent piece for a larger beginning group, where the stately tempo can help build strong ringing skills. It has been published using large print, to facilitate reading in darkened spaces.This is a reproducible product. This piece may be purchased as a score for one performing group, and copies made for the members of that one performing group. Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1001565). This is an arrangement for 2-4 octave handbell choir of If I Had a Hammer.This protest song was written in 1950 in support of the progressive movement. The song was written by Pete Seeger and Lee Hays for the folk group The Weavers. It was made famous by the group Peter, Paul, and Mary and the singer Trini Lopez whose versions both charted in the top 10 on the charts in the 1960s.This version is arranged for 2-4 octave handbell choir and makes heavy use of mallets for most of the piece. There are some very quick changes between using mallets and normal ringing and there are a lot of syncopated rhythms throughout the piece. These challenges make this arrangement ideal for smaller bell choirs that are still at a intermediate or higher playing ability. Even though the song is not specifically intended for church services, the message of the song can be incorporated into quite a variety of religious themes.The arrangement is in the key of C with no accidentals. It is a fairly easy arrangement for ‘just beyond beginner’ groups, although the dotted eighth-sixteenth pattern and moving harmony parts may take a bit of extra practice. Melody lines in both treble and bass clef keep everyone involved. At about two and a half minutes long, this is an excellent piece for worship or concert use. This is a reproducible product. The arrangements feature very simple rhythms and chords for handbells or handchimes, and unison vocal parts. Also included is an original processional, composed of layered ostinato patterns, with alternate texts for General, Christmas, Palm Sunday and Easter use. In her preface, Karen Lakey Buckwalter writes, Having served 38 years in full time music ministry, I realized some of the most joyful moments were convincing choirs of all ages that they could ring and sing simultaneously. One also has the option of having a soloist or vocal choir sing the hymn tune accompanied by the handbell or handchime choir. Separate vocal pages are included for the convenience of non-ringing singers. The Saving Blood of Jesus is a 4-5 octave, 110 measure handbell choir arrangement, that is a medley of the Christian hymns: Nothing But the blood, Jesus Paid It All, The Old Rugged Cross, Down at the Cross, and There Is Power in the Blood. The theme of the arrangement is the blood of Jesus that was shed for us on the Cross. Three octaves of OPTIONAL handchimes (C4 through F6) are used in The Old Rugged Cross, but handbells can be substituted for the handchimes, if desired. There is a brief introduction (...No other Fount I know...). Throughout most of this arrangement, use is made of descant lines and bass runs. There are contrasting styles, tempos, key signatures and dynamic levels within. Only the subject matter remains constant. Because of the emphasis on the Crucifixion, it can also be used as Easter music. This is probably a 3+ or 4- level of difficulty. The audio clip supplied is in a piano voice (patch) but suffices to demonstrate how the arrangement is generally meant to sound.
