I wrote this song to describe my feelings about the atonement of Jesus Christ. It's a conversation with the Savior about His role in my life and my desire to follow Him. It was greatly inspired by the October 2012 General Conference address The First Great Commandment by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland. Elder Holland states: My beloved brothers and sisters, I am not certain just what our experience will be on Judgment Day, but I will be very surprised if, at some point in that conversation, God does not ask us exactly what Christ asked Peter: 'Did you love me?' I think He will want to know if in our very mortal, very inadequate, and sometimes childish grasp of things, did we at least understand one commandment, the first and greatest commandment of them all—'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind' (Luke 10:27; see also Matthew 22:37–38). And if at such a moment we can stammer out, 'Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee,' then He may remind us that the crowning characteristic of love is always loyalty. Little by little the addicted and all of his friends and family lose faith, hope, love, peace, joy, and self respect. The shame of addiction keeps them in despair. They constantly have voices in their heads that say you’re no good, you’re no good, do you hear me, you’re no good. Well I’m here to tell you that is a lie. You are good. You are worth something. Life , family, love, peace, joy. Those are all things that are worth fighting for. Take them back. You are not unworthy. You can fight the addiction. You have made mistakes that are correctable. God tells us to resist the devil and he will flee from you. Then God says to draw near unto Him and He will draw near unto you. When God draws close to us, we will recieve His strength and power to leave the addiction behind. With Him we can overcome anything.

DedicationSometime in the 1980's, Richard Tober, a brother in Christ who was also an appliance repair man, came to our house on Hill Street in Coloma, Michigan to fix our kitchen range. He knew that I was a composer, and during the course of his time with us that day he told about his love for Jesus and his aspiration to write poetry with music to express that love. He didn't feel he was equipped to put music to his words, but he did have a poem that he gave me, wondering if I would set it to music for him. It was a difficult task because Richard's poetry was not set up in any formal poetic fashion; it was, however, a fulfilling task because his poem was such a simple, childlike, personal expression of his love for the Lord. I Am Going Home to Glory is the result of our collaboration. He was thrilled with the outcome. Now that Richard has left this world to be with Jesus, I am happy that God allowed and enabled me to set Richard's poem to music. -Richard Barber

Lewis, Winston Churchill, and Dorothy Day to name but a few--have long been attracted to this poem. The irony behind the attraction, at least for some, is that Henley himself was apparently an atheist or an agnostic. If you know Henley's biography, you know that he suffered greatly during his lifetime. In any event, the poem is a paean to the human spirit. For believers, the words remind us that although we may have little control over what comes our way, God grants us the power to choose how we will respond.
