Published by Silver Sickle Publications (A0.942058). This witty and extremely fun work to perform by composer Apostolos Paraskevas was conceived after real events. There is a version for Soprano/tenor and Piano and one for guitar as well. Easy to perform and the text was inspired of the following narrative. I Slaughtered an Orange over the Sink... ...and it just sat there…It didn't say a word, not a sound of anguish, not even when my teeth started to tear apart it's flesh little by little... I knew it was a special orange but I couldn't fathom the magnitude of its character…Even when gentle I took it away from its friends there at the top of the kitchen counter, it looked at me almost with a sense of gratitude. Yes, gratitude.! As if it was saying: Thank you! Thank you for helping me to fulfill the purpose of my life…Since I was a little seed I knew I would serve a higher purpose. My sacrifice will help a human to become a healthier mother, doctor, composer, a better scientist. Yes, I think I felt it said…a better composer as well. ...and there I was, sinking my teeth deep inside its flesh and taking all of what it had to offer. It's life, it's substance, it's gratitude for serving a higher purpose. I slaughtered it over the sink, to avoid any evidence of what had happen there. The remaining outer sell, I placed it on the stove top and lighted up with fire, as my mother use to do, to release the heavenly smell and there it was. Evaporated everywhere! I inhale it, It became totally a part of me. Today, I slaughtered an orange over the sink and I didn’t say thank you! Apostolos Paraskevas is a classical guitarist and composer as well as an award-winning film director and producer. He has received multiple international awards for his compositions and was nominated for a Grammy Award. He is the only guitarist ever to have a major orchestral piece performed at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Lukas Foss––and the only musician who has performed there in a Grim Reaper outfit. He was the founder and served for 16 years as the artistic director of the International Guitar Congress-Festival of Corfu, Greece. He is a voting member of the Recording Academy (Grammys). After his undergraduate music studies in Volos he pursued advanced studies in classical guitar with Costas Cotsiolis (diploma, 1990) and Leo Brouwer (Havana 1984, 1988), as well as postgraduate studies in composition with Lukas Foss and Theodore Antoniou (DMA in composition, Boston University, 1998). Paraskevas embarked on a successful career as a guitar soloist and contemporary composer, achieving distinctions in both disciplines: Grammy nomination for Chase Dance (Bridge Records, 1999); first prize for Night Wanderings (Lukas Foss Composition Competition, 2000); first prize for Phygein Adynaton (National Composers Conference, 1997); and numerous prestigious commissions, performances, and publications. Following teaching posts at Northeastern and Boston Universities, Paraskevas has taught since 2001 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston (professor of composition and classical guitar). His eclectic compositional style arises as an idiosyncratic integration of seemingly conflicting influences – from avant-garde approaches to harmonic structure, form, and timbre, to pop-folk modal and rhythmical concepts – amalgamated into a personal evocative musical language, characterized by rhythmic verve, melodic grace, dramatic (and sometimes unexpectedly humorous) gestures, and ritualistic or theatrical elements. The latter feature has also led Paraskevas to the creation of films, notably the acclaimed I Finally Did It (Gold award, California Film Awards 2010), dealing wittily with Death, a recurring extra-musical theme in his music. This is the first publication of a new Christmas song, set for baritone and piano. The words are those of a poem by Leonard Clark (1905 – 1981), an English poet who was raised in The Forest of Dean, in the west of England. In 1972 he published a slim little book of Christmas poems, of which ‘Singing in the Streets’ is one, surely one of the most appealing of Christmas poems. It gives its name to the book. The poem tells of an older man revisiting the village of his boyhood, and wondering whether, somehow, the streets still hold the sound of the carols that he and the other boys and girls sang there. It begins: ‘I had almost forgotten the singing in the streets,Snow piled up by the houses, drifting Underneath the door into the warm room, …’ It is very evocative of that time and of the magic that Christmas always holds for children. Drawn from the same book of poems there is available another new Christmas song, called The Birth; that one is set in two versions, one for voice and piano and the other for SATB a cappella. Ian Calvert.

The poems set are When I watch the Living Meet, I Wake from Dreams and Turning, and There Pass the Careless People.Review.It is important to note that David songs, while rooted in the older art song tradition, make use of the sophisticated compositional techniques of the 20th and 21st centuries. David has an ability to make complicated melodic lines that hint but do not venture into atonality, sound simple and beautiful. There, walking the streets, he saw a poster announcing a vocal recital in what he describes as “a very old chapel,†and which was the first public concert he saw since the beginning of the pandemic. “Maybe it was the ambience of the chapel, the city, and the Italian arias that gave me inspiration for the cycle,†he says. And the Poemas de bar became a model for the new music. “Because the Poemas were conversations in a bar, â€De La Chica explains, “I decided to capture everyday conversations in Florence. I ‘stole’ some stories—for example, when I was on line to buy tickets for the Campanile, or in a coffee shop,†he would note bits of conversations he overheard. He tells one story about this: “I still remember around 2 a.m., there was one guy sitting on a bridge over the Arno. I think he was drunk.†De La Chica heard him saying to passersby, “look at the light of the river.†The composer thought the man was trying to jump, an experiencehe describes as “a little scary.†— George Grella.

Originally titled “See How Brown Autumn Spreads the Fieldsâ€, this song is so rare that I couldn’t find any music for it online, and therefore wrote a new melody and accompaniment for it that captures the the solemnity and anguish of the lyrics. It’s one of the songs of harvest off of my album entitled “Hymns of Autumnâ€, but doesn’t talk about harvest in the traditional sense we normally sing about these days.Not many talk about the judgement of God in today’s church, and this hymn will send chills down the spine of the most devout believer as we realize the full spectrum of God's character, including His wrath and power on Judgement Day. I found this in an old hymnal that was so old that the “Sâ€s were still written as “Fâ€s, and I had to squint to read it while learning to sing for this recording. I hope this ancient and powerful hymn finds a place to minister to today's church and believers around the world, perhaps after a sermon on God’s judgement, or for a Lent or Advent service about repentance and turning to God, both individually and as a nation.This version is in B Minor to match the original recording, and includes the full piano accompaniment as played in the recording. Also available, by searching Stacey Plays Hymns and the song title on this site is a lead sheet version for those who prefer to play off a chart.For other formats including large print, or extended choral harmony versions, please write me at staceyplayshymns@gmail.com and I'll be glad to make them especially for you. My colleague at North Lake College was an outstanding bass/baritone and a church choir director. He handed me a copy of Wesley's directions for singers...found in many old hymnals...and we both enjoyed good laughs at how accurate the words are to modern congregations. My song is a type of theater presentation...or a short cantata and portrays the contrasting emotions in the text. For example: Sing lustily and with good courage ...singing the songs of Satan! Will be a dramatic high point! But, Wesley's beautiful ending makes a great conclusion. Above all sing spiritually. Have and eye to God in every word you sing Directions requires a good pianist but the voice part doesn't require a huge range. Note: there is a Mezzo Soprano score enclosed.

German.<br> <br> An important addition to our newly produced orchestral materials is the first publication of vocal scores of Wagner's ten great operas, in every important version, based on the Complete Edition.<br> <br> The score corresponds to the performance materials from the Complete Edition.<br> For practical use in rehearsal cues and bar numbers throughout.<br> The publisher has secured the services of renewed musicologists associated with the Richard Wagner Complete Edition who convey detailed information in critical forewords.<br> The forewords are given in three languages(German, English, French).<br> Uniform and attractive front cover designs with reproductions of paintings from the Wagner era underline the series design of the edition.<br> <br> DIE WALKURE<br> <br> In the tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen [The Ring of the Nibelung] which was subtitled by Wagner as A stage festival play for three days and a preliminary evening, Die Walkure [The Valkyrie] forms the first day following Das Rheingold as the preliminary evening. The beginning of the history of the origins of the tetralogy is frequently placed in 1848 when Wagner compiled a prose sketch entitled Die Nibelungensage (Erstschrift) [The Nibelung Saga (first draft)] or Die Sage von den Nibelungen (Reinschrift) [The Saga of the Niblelungs (fair copy)] which would suggest that this was already the text for the Ring des Nibelungen, but the actual concept for the tetralogy did not actually evolve until the autumn of 1851. When Wagner first compiled the libretto for the heroic opera Siegfried's Tod [Siegfried's Death] in November 1848 - during his period of employment as Hofkapellmeister[court music director] in Dresden - he was in fact only planning a single opera and continued to adhere to this concept even after his involvement in the failed Dresden uprising in 1849 and subsequent escape to Switzerland. He began with the composition of Siegfried's Tod in the summer of 1850 in Zurich, but soon laid it aside. He returned to the project almost a year later in May 1851 with the idea of a two-part drama: to lend the plot greater conclusiveness, Siegfried's Tod would be preceded by a second opera entitled Der junge Siegfried [The Young Siegfried], subsequently shortened to Siegfried, but this extension was still insufficient to satisfy Wagner's dramatic-dramaturgic aspirations. In November 1851, he began the first text drafts for Das Rheingold and Die Walkure which were followed by the libretti in 1852: Die Walkure was completed in June 1852.<br> <br> The premiere of Die Walkure was held in Munich on 26 June 1870, but without Wagner's specific permission as he did not wish the operas to be performed separately. He held the opinion that Die Walkure was only logical and comprehendible within the context of the complete tetralogy. Wagner had however not only made a present of the autograph score to King Ludwig II of Bavaria who had been his generous benefactor since 1864, but had also sold him the rights to the tetralogy. The king was eager to experience performances of the already finished parts and Wagner was therefore powerless to prevent him from commanding performances of the individual operas. DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NÜRNBERG “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg is today still considered a German festival and national opera: this evaluation is borne out by the opera’s performance history, the history of its reception and customary performance practice. Critical minds will perhaps recall the quotation from Friedrich Nietzsche’s publication \"Jenseits von Gut und Böse\" [Beyond Good and Evil] in which the Vorspiel [Prelude] to Meistersinger is described as ‘magnificent, ornate and ponderous art’ and Wagner’s music in general as being ‘rough and coarse’. This music according to Nietzsche possesses ‘no trace of the fine southern clarity of the sky and nothing of grace’, but instead ‘a cumbersome garb, with a touch of licentious barbarism and solemnity’ and ‘even a certain degree of ungainliness’. Nietzsche’s evaluation is regarded by many as an insight into the essence of the matter, although it is evident that Nietzsche was exaggerating in order to be provocative. What is more important today is however that this characterisation appears to have been the result of an approach to the performance of Meistersinger which had neglected or even gone as far as to misappropriate elements of this work. This is also the conclusion reached in the Meistersinger Edition of the Critical Complete Edition of the Musical Works of Richard Wagner (Richard Wagner, Sämtliche Werke, Vol. 9, I-III, edited by Egon Voss, Mainz 1979-1987). It has in fact been established that the first print of the score published by B. Schott’s Söhne in Mainz in 1868 contained numerous errors and omissions, particularly with regard to dynamic markings and articulation. The difference between staccato dots and dashes which has an influence on the tone was simply ignored. The substantial omission of these staccato markings unambiguously draws attention to the fact that Wagner intended a lighter-weight sound than was produced in adherence the first edition. The same also holds true for the dynamic markings which were submitted to a general levelling process in the first edition, thereby entirely masking their original broad scope of differentiation. […] When the saying ‘the music sets the tone’ is cited, it is in actual fact tempo, dynamics which are implied. If the new findings incorporated into the Meistersinger edition of the Critical Complete Edition are taken seriously, this will inevitably produce a new Meistersinger sound.” (Egon Voss, quoted from the foreword of the new Meistersinger vocal score; translated by Lindsay Chalmers-Gerbracht).
