This is a short, two-page arrangement of Meghan Trainor's cheerful and catchy defense of diversity in body-types. It was written to be workshopped, and can be learned and performed in an afternoon, and features vocal ranges accessible to relatively inexperienced singers. It starts off with the tune in unison, then split between upper and lower voices, before blossoming out into harmony, and passing the melody to the lead for the verse.
It is written in A major, as that is the key of the original, but leaves headroom to pitch it up should the voices need it.
N.B. This arrangement is notated in treble and bass alta (i.e. sung an octave higher than written) clefs.

(Tenor, lead, baritone, bass are roughly equivalent to SSAA, although lead and baritone have similar - in this case, identical! - ranges, but perform different functions). A Little Respect was written and recorded by English synth-pop duo Erasure, and is known as one of their signature songs. It reached #4 on the UK singles chart, #14 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and #2 on the US Hot Dance Club Songs chart. This arrangement uses words from the song in place of neutral vowels to create an early ostinato (without boring the harmony parts!) before expanding into homorhythm in verse 2. The melody is mainly in the lead part, with the final motif from the chorus passed to the tenors. In the final verse, a key change moves the melody to the basses and baritones, with the leads taking the final phrase. This arrangement was written for a barbershop chorus, and as such the lowest voice part has a lower range than is custom for choral SSAA writing. However, the range of the entire arrangement is quite narrow, and so it could be sung in a higher tessitura without undo strain on the upper voices. Please note: in keeping with normal barbershop practice the men's barbershop voicing names are used (tenor, lead, baritone and bass) and an octave-shifted bass clef is used for the baritone and bass parts. Vocal ranges are: Tenor: D4 - F5 (D above middle C to F above high C) Lead: G3 - C5 (G below middle C to high C) Baritone: G3 - C5 (G below middle C to high C) Bass: D3 - F4 (D below middle C to F above middle C).

Its bassline makes explicit reference to Ben E King's 'Stand By Me', while its harmonic riffs and melodic styling have been compared to songs by The Supremes and Aretha Franklin.The arrangement was commissioned by Young Women in Harmony, and keeps all the parts in the centre of the voice so as not to strain young ranges. This results in a tight , bright sound that captures the feel of original's Hammond organ. It also uses a variety of texture - from full unisons, to duets, to full four-part harmony - so is much more suited to chorus than quartet.N.B. The lyrics are in a confessional style, while there's a theme of self-determination in the metaphorical ladder of the refrain... The song features on Paula Cole's debut album Harbinger (1994) and runs the gamut of emotions from the urgent, unaccompanied opening strains and melancholy of the verses – to the striving, optimistic, melodic refrain and the joyous climax with divided voices. The original main vocal melody is given to the first sopranos, with the rest of the choir offering a gentle, rhythmicised ah accompaniment in the verses. The crunchy chords and occasional dissonances of the original are dramatised and intensified by the live choral setting. The piano part often operates independently, providing harmonic and rhythmic support and a robust bass in louder passages. No sheet music was originally issued with the song – perhaps because of the richly detailed texture of the women's backing voices – and this arrangement by David M. Hoyle represents the first commercially-available transcription/arrangement.

Arabic, English.This text is part of a longer work by Mohja Kahf titled My People Are Rising: An unfinished poem begun in Spring 2011 for an unfinished Revolution begun in March 2011. It speaks so viscerally of the tragic events in Syria that it was impossible to imagine setting it with Western harmonies. And so the composer began an exploration of Arabic music, with its quarter-tone scales, its lack of vertical chordal structure, its abundantly ornamented heterophony. Since quarter-tones are not a part of our Western choral training, the scales are tempered a bit (resulting in a fair number of augmented seconds) and a violin is added to the melodic mix for pitch support. The voices and violin are accompanied by a doumbek player, who is highly encouraged to improvise; the written notation is only there as a guide. This piece is dark, dramatic, and powerful, yet not without triumph. Duration: 8:30.

This is a treble choir arrangement of the traditional round Grasshoppers Three. It's a fun sing with an optional solo part and sand block. The singers make grasshopper noises, and it's a fun addition to a spring choral concert. Grasshoppers based on the vocal improv workshops I've attended with Bobby McFerrin. Even though it's SSAA + solo, it's an easy learn because it's based on stacking chords and a round. It's been beautifully performed by The Piedmont East Bay Children's Chorus (Training Group), Beverly Vista Middle School Choir (Beverly Hills), and Solstice Female Vocal Ensemble.
