Arranged for solo female voice, SSAA choir and piano, this is a song of hope, the hope of a girl to escape the workhouse during the Irish Famine years and to travel to make a new life in Australia. At the time the British Crown was encouraging girls to emigrate as a means to redress the gender balance in the colonies – there were too many men and not enough women. Over four thousand young women took this journey between 1848 and 1850. The composer Brendan Graham expressed his own hope that this song might have significance for the descendants of those girls, many of whom were present at the song’s first performance in 2012 at the Irish Famine Commemoration in Sydney.

This work approaches the matter of change, perhaps ironically, via minimalistic techniques and an uplifting perspective. This song is an entirely secular work in Latin. It touches on some minimalist techniques and could be integrated into secondary school music lessons as a means of discussing minimalism and also as a means to introduce students to singing in Latin while avoiding religious ties. This work has been arranged for SSAA choir (a cappella) from the original SATB version and is approximately 4.5 minutes in duration. As a theorist, his areas of study vary widely, including 18th century counterpoint, the early American Sacred Harp tradition and impressionism. As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Association’s Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. There were several melodies attached to the poem by Isaac Watts. The traditional version, which has become the most popular, is attributed to Lowell Mason, and is the fourth revised version. The first part of the tune in the popular version is similar to pieces by George Frideric Handel, and the melody for the second part is Lowell Mason's. Presented herein is a fifth version (maybe there are more!). If one of Handel's rousing pieces could be used for the first part of the song, why not another? I have used the Handel's Overture to the Music for the Royal Fireworks for the first part of the song, and have kept Lowell Mason's rousing ending. Please enjoy. Also available for SATB. ASCAP.

This choral song cycle consists of settings of the four main Marian antiphons used in the traditional Latin liturgy: Ave, Regina coelorum; Regina Coeli; Alma Redemptoris Mater; and Salve Regina. The music makes use of much expressive dissonance but within the limits of a purely diatonic collection of pitches. The antiphons are presented here in the order in which they would be sung during the church year. If performed as a group in a concert setting they may be sung in this order or the order may be changed for musical reasons. They may also be performed individually for liturgical or concert use.

Using the words of Christina Rossetti's delightful poem of the same name, this is an unaccompanied choral piece for female voices (SSAA with some divisi). It begins 'My heart is like a singing bird whose nest is in a watered shoot' and as the voices weave together, a series of beautiful imagery is presented including apple trees, rainbow shells, peacocks, silver fleur de lys, a halcyon sea, and a dais of silk and down. Towards the end it breaks out into a joyful 'Happy Birthday' waltz, before the final climax 'The Birthday of my life!.
