Horsey Horsey is a comedy song arranged by David McKeown as a duet for one Clarinet and one Viola. Horsey Horsey was written in 1937 by Paddy Roberts and Ralph Butler. Paddy Roberts was a South African musician who flew in the RAF during the Second World War, then later as a commercial airline pilot. His music career finally got off the ground in the mid ‘50s. Ralph Butler was a well-known comedy lyricist of the time, responsible also for The Sun Has Got His Hat On, Nellie The Elephant and Run Rabbit, Run among others. Nowadays Horsey Horsey is best known as a nursery rhyme.This duet version of Horsey Horsey is a fun Theme and Variations, with the melody presented in swing style, in a slow minor key version, in 6/8 and in a nineteenth century style grand finale. The arrangement moves through several different keys, exploring a wide range of the instruments, and is therefore suitable for players at an Advanced Intermediate level. Joplin lived for a while in Sedalia, Missouri and the Maple Leaf Club in that town is thought to have provided the name for this composition. It provided Joplin with a steady income for the rest of his life, and while he requested that it be played at his funeral, his wife refused as she felt it inappropriate. It was the first track on Joshua Rifkin’s famous 1970 revival recording of Joplin’s music and, never waning in popularity, it has featured in hundreds of films.This version for Clarinet and Viola Duet includes all four sections of the original composition. The tempo in recorded versions varies widely between 72 and 126, so the marking of 92 is a suggestion only.
