It works well in pretty much any concert due to its popularity and the variations in dynamics, timbre, texture and, or course, the incredibly unpredictable harmonies. I have kept much of the piano accompaniment the same as David Bowie composed. There is some lovely interplay between the vocal parts which explores the original text a little further, leading to a huge, impressive ending. An essential addition to any programme, this arrangement is a great crowd-pleaser!

The opening percussion motif is intended to evoke Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man.II. Oh, Watch the Stars-- Oh, Watch the Stars and Great Big Stars, combined in unique ways. The two songs used, Oh, Watch the Stars and Great Big Stars, are distinct in their own right. They have been fused together in this movement, borrowing the text from one and using the tune from the other, and modifying one to partner with the other when presented simultaneously. The Messe de Minuit was written around 1694 for the Jesuit church of Saint-Louis in Paris.What is remarkable about this mass is the use of ten French noëls (Christmas carols) in the composition. In the liturgy the birth of Christ is celebrated with three masses: the first during the night of December 24th, the second in the early morning of December 25th, and the third on the day itself. A special atmosphere surrounds the first of these masses on account of the midnight hour, and so CharpenÂtier gave special expression to the long observed practice in France of including popular Christmas carols in the Christmas liturgy by including them in the composition of his midnight mass. Although the Council of Trent had forbidden this kind of borrowing of secular melodies in masses in principle, long established customs were tolerated. Charpentier’s justly famous Messe de Minuit represents a perfect synthesis between the secular and liturgical, and between the popular and learned. Adapting the vast majority of the Latin mass to French noëls, the Messe de Minuit’s fresnhess and joyful spirit perfectly represent Advent. While Charpentier used ten different noël’s through the course of the work, the most serious moment of the mass, the statements of Christ’s incarnation, his mortal existence, and his death under Pontius Pilate, is given wholly original, appropriately sober music.

The Messe de Minuit was written around 1694 for the Jesuit church of Saint-Louis in Paris.What is remarkable about this mass is the use of ten French noëls (Christmas carols) in the composition. In the liturgy the birth of Christ is celebrated with three masses: the first during the night of December 24th, the second in the early morning of December 25th, and the third on the day itself. A special atmosphere surrounds the first of these masses on account of the midnight hour, and so CharpenÂtier gave special expression to the long observed practice in France of including popular Christmas carols in the Christmas liturgy by including them in the composition of his midnight mass. Although the Council of Trent had forbidden this kind of borrowing of secular melodies in masses in principle, long established customs were tolerated. Charpentier’s justly famous Messe de Minuit represents a perfect synthesis between the secular and liturgical, and between the popular and learned. Adapting the vast majority of the Latin mass to French noëls, the Messe de Minuit’s fresnhess and joyful spirit perfectly represent Advent. While Charpentier used ten different noël’s through the course of the work, the most serious moment of the mass, the statements of Christ’s incarnation, his mortal existence, and his death under Pontius Pilate, is given wholly original, appropriately sober music.

History: The Father Sent the Son is the title song of a cantata I composed ten or so years ago for a church choir that could barely muster a men's section. They loved to sing. They rehearsed every Sunday afternoon between services and sang every Sunday morning for worship and often in the evenings. They loved the entire cantata and sang it with enthusiasm. Since that time other choirs have song the cantata, and I have added and subtracted and rewritten through the years. I wanted to get the entire cantata as close to perfection as possible before I published it, but I have decided to publish the portions I am most happy with piecemeal for the time being. When all portions are where I thing they should be, I will publish the entire cantata as one work. Lord willing, of course. Please let me know if you enjoy the music I write. The composer wrote it for her mothers funeral, wanting to end the service in a positive Celebration of Life sort of way. It was performed by the First Presbyterian Choir on February 9, 2022, however many changes have been made to the piece since. The MP3 is computer generated and is only to give conductors an idea of how it might sound. Human voices of course will add richness, artistry, and expression to the music.

Always on My Mind is a song by Johnny Christopher, Mark James, and Wayne Carson, recorded first by B.J. Thomas in 1969, then other versions including Gwen McCrae, Brenda Lee, Willie Nelson, The Pet Shop Boy, and of course, Elvis Presley.
This is a very accessible soprano/alto/baritone arrangement for SAB choir by well known UK choral composer and arranger Chris Lawry (www.chrislawry.com) which is simpler and quicker to get ready for performance but still provides a really effective concert work for both choir and audience.
