I have written an 'outro' to bring a twist to the words. Originally it was arranged for a Gospel Choir so we used the words 'says our God', but I have since used it with a community choir and used the words 'Oohhh') there - both work well.Be warned - everyone is going through something, and this song seems to bring out a lot of emotion from the choir and audience. Keep some tissues andy. It sounds beautiful.Tried, tested and very much enjoyed by all :).

Published by Maria Thompson Corley (A0.845956). The text to this dramatic, intense song was inspired by the events of the summer of 2020; that said, the trope it addresses goes back for many years. The message is this: no person can be summed up by one emotion, and all have the right to be angry, on occasion. Black women have more reason to be angry than a lot of people, and while we shouldn't be consumed by anger, we shouldn't feel like we can't express it, either. Anger results from hurt or fear; the more lyrical middle section alludes to the pain that we've experienced. The song ends with the defiant question: But what if I were? If you have questions, Raehann Bryce and Jeanne-Minette Cilliers capture this song perfectly in the YouTube video. This lovely folksong is thought to have come from Scotland, though similar versions have been recorded in other parts of Britain. The song is also known as O Waly, Waly which means something like “woe is meâ€. For such an old song, it is not surprising that there are many variations of the lyrics. An early version of the modern lyrics was consolidated by the British folksong collector Cecil Sharp in 1906, using multiple older sources in southern England. There are many sets of lyrics with different story-lines. This was because in the past, performers would often create new lyrics for the song. This melody has attracted an entire family of lyrics many of which bear little relationship to each other. The words used in this choral arrangement reflect the popular lyrics used during the twentieth century. The song was arranged for voice and piano in 1948 by British composer Benjamin Britten but in more recent times, was made popular by many folk singers notably Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. It has become one of the most popular folk songs today, largely because of its beautiful tune. But as with the lyrics, there are many variations on the melody with the result that no single variation can be considered the “correct†one.This SAB arrangement by Colin Kirkpatrick is ideal for high school or college choir, especially if the tenor/bass section is a bit low on numbers. Each section of the choir has the melody line at some point and there are attractive and evocative counter-melodies. In the soprano part (which has one brief divisi section), the highest note is G5 (which occurs only once and safely approached) and the highest note in the alto part is C5 (in the middle of the treble staff). The bartione part lies between A flat 2 (bottom space in bass clef) and D3 (just above the staff). The piano part is an integral part of the arrangement and therefore essential. The music begins in E flat and modulates to C major. Running at just over three minutes, the work is sure to be popular with choir and audiences alike.

This lovely folksong is thought to have come from Scotland, though similar versions have been recorded in other parts of Britain. The song is also known as “O Waly, Waly†which means something like “woe is meâ€. For such an old song, it is not surprising that there are many variations of the lyrics. An early version of the modern lyrics was consolidated by the British folksong collector Cecil Sharp in 1906 using multiple older sources in southern England. There are many sets of lyrics with different story-lines. This was because performers would often create new lyrics for the song. This melody has attracted a family of lyrics many of which bear little relationship to each other. The words used in this choral arrangement reflect the popular and optimistic lyrics used during the twentieth century. The song was made popular by many folk singers notably Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. It has become one of the most popular folk songs today, largely because of its beautiful tune. But as with the lyrics, there are many variations on the melody with the result that no single variation can be considered the “correct†one.This SSA arrangement by Colin Kirkpatrick is ideal for boy choir, amateur choir, school or college choir. Each section of the choir as the melody line at some point and there are attractive and evocative counter-melodies. In the Soprano 1 part (which has one brief divisi section), the highest note is G5 (the G just above the staff) and the highest note in the Soprano 2 part is E5 (near the top of the treble staff). The Alto part has a range of G below Middle C (G4) up to B flat in the middle of the treble staff. The piano part is an integral part of the arrangement and therefore essential. The music begins in E flat and modulates to C major. Running at just over three minutes, the work is sure to be popular with choir and audiences alike. The message of Christmas Is... is timeless - hope, joy, love and peace. On a personal note, the images evoked by the text are memories of my own childhood in wintry Canada where Christmas was made magical not by things (because no one had much) but by kind friends, seasonal sights and sounds, and simply being and sharing together.

Although Rückert did not originally give the poem a title, Schubert titled his song after its first line, “Du bist die Ruh’,†and Rückert later titled his poem “Kehr ein bei mir,†or “Stay with me.†With a simple yet beautiful melody, sung with a seemingly uninterrupted legato, Schubert conveys the sense of “calm†and “peace†the poet feels in the companionship of his beloved. So many of the Lieder by 19th-century composers like Schubert and Schumann, chief proponents of the genre, lend themselves well to rearrangement for multiple voices. Here, D. Cape Cod Girls, originating from North America, is traditionally thought of as a short-drag shanty used in activities such as raising sails. Its lyrics vary from version to version between “heaveâ€, “haulâ€, and “bound†away, depending on the physical activity required. Jolly Sailor Bold first appears in a collection of sailing songs out of London, but has many similarities to the Irish ballad The Banks of Claudy. While not used as a working song, its minor tonality and association to sailing folklore makes for an interesting middle point along the journey. This setting contains a newly written verse warning of the dangers of sirens, mythical creatures known to sing to lure sailors to their doom. Lastly, Leave Her, Johnny is a pump shanty, usually one of the last activities done as a ship docks. In these types of pieces, sailors sing to complain about the rough conditions aboard, knowing they are soon to leave and will face no punishment. While sea shanties have been popular repertoire for tenor/bass ensembles, there has been a distinct lack of arranging for treble choirs. Historical research is discovering more and more evidence that while piracy and sailing was male-dominated, female captains like Anne Bonny, Mary Read, Zheng Yi Sao and others made their mark on the high seas. This piece is dedicated to the women that his-tory has forgotten.

Published by Daniel Steenson (A0.905647). Beginning solfege singers! As you probably know, not all melodies lie between lower Do and higher Do. Many melodies orbit around their key note, Do. Relatively speaking, these melodies travel between a collection of pitches extending from lower Sol to upper Sol (Ex: Amazing Grace, Happy Birthday, the familiar theme from Brahms Symphony No. 1, 4th movement). Learning to hear and navigate these basic Sol-to-Sol tonal relationships is a vital step for students learning to sight-sing using the solfege system. Here is a warm-up exercise of a Sol-to-Sol melody traversing keys having one to three sharps or flats. There are several typical Re-Ti-Do cadential gestures and a few simple skips. This exercise reviews basic patterns to build fluency in beginners. Sing using solfege hand symbols. After this, sing my Dona Solbis Facem using solfege/hand symbols followed by Dona Nobis Pacem in Latin.

This arrangement is for SSA and Piano, and sits at a easy-medium difficulty level for high school groups, but this is a certainly possible piece for middle school groups as well.This arrangement features a soloist in the first verse with hums and 'oo's in the background; the chorus is sung by all voices in 3-part harmony. All voices get the melody on multiple occasions during the piece. Additionally, this arrangement features a unique canon effect between verses one and two, where each voice gets a turn to 'oo' the first four notes of the main melody (B4-C5-E4-G4) before going to other harmonies. Firstly, Arabia's Magi sought him is a setting of original English words by the composer which references the journey of the Magi, their gifts and the redemption of the world following a humble birth. This three-part (S,A,Bar.) homophonic piece is only one page in length but, in its 45-second duration, sets the scene for the following Latin motet. Ubi est qui natus est uses the words from Matthew 2,2 when the Magi ask after the new-born King of Judea. Comprising three short contrapuntal sections, this section lasts about 1.15. Either section (English or Latin) may be used independently or, as intended, with the English followed immediately by the Latin.Marked as Early Intermediate because there are a few intervals which may catch the unwary sight-reader. However, with practice, this is certainly not difficult. (And, yes, I know this is not actually a Christmas piece, but it may well be included in a service of Lessons & Carols - and there was no option for Epiphany.)N.B. The second & third pages are for reference; please print (& back) pages 1 & 3-5 for the complete work, or 3-5 to miss the title page.

This is a great arrangement for a budding SSA choir or a 2-part choir that wants to try something with a little more challenge.The Ella Fitzgerald solo (which I will link) is one of the best vocal improvisations of the era. The introduction on the recording is not featured here.
