Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522228). The text to this new SSA setting is by Peter Abelard, the medieval French scholastic philosopher, theologian and logician. The setting gives opportunities for soprano and alto solos though they can be sung tutti if more appropriate. The keyboard part is essential though there are two a cappella sections in the arrangement. The vocal parts all lie easily within average range. The keyboard part, with its plodding bass line (which may be doubled on double bass if required) gives the impression of the slow walk of Jesus to the Cross. This is a melancholy, reflective arrangement. Other SSA titles in this series of three Easter canticles are “My Song is Love Unknown†(Text by Samuel Crossman 1624-1683) and “A Time to Watch, A time to Pray (Text by John Mason Neale 1818-1866â€. In the audio sample, soprano 1 is played by the flute, soprano 2 by the oboe and alto by the clarinet.

Tobias Clausnitzer (1619-1684) was a German Lutheran pastor and writer of theological treatises, sermons, and hymns. His best-known hymn, perhaps, is Liebster Jesu wir sind bier, translated to English and published as Blessed Jesus, at thy word by the English hymn-writer and educator Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878) in her Lyra Germanica — Hymns for the Sundays and Chief Festivals of the Christian Year, translated from the German (1858), and repeated in her Chorale Book for England (1863). Winkworth was also translator for Clausnitzer's Wir glauben all an einen Gott, Yater, Sohn und heilgen Geist (We all believe in one true God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost), a metrical paraphrase of the Apostles Creed designated for Trinity Sunday in the Culmbach-Bayreuth Gesang-Buch (1668). Winkworth also included this in her Chorale Book for England.This new musical setting, mostly in unison and briefly expanding to three-part harmony at the peak of each verse, is very singable by small and developing choirs composed of soprano, alto, and baritone/bass voices. The accompaniment, with sustained tones, is best realized on organ.The opening phrase, We all believe in one true God, may be sung by a solo male voice, similar to the opening intonation of a chanted canticle or psalm. Written by Henry Williams Baker (1821-1877) and titled “The Lord Shall Give His People the Blessing of Peace,” the text of “O God of Love, Give Peace Again” was published in the 1861 edition of the landmark English hymnal, Hymns Ancient and Modern. Baker, who is perhaps best remembered for his hymn “The King of Love My Shepherd Is,” was chairman of the committee that prepared that hymnal. Because war is a constant in the world, Baker's text is always relevant. Stanza 1 is an entreaty that God would “make wars throughout the world to cease.” Stanza 2 asks that God recall his “works of old,” for only by God's hand can peace be given again. Stanza 3 extends this thought by asking “Whom shall we trust but thee, O Lord? Where rest but on thy faithful word?” and noting that “none ever called on Thee in vain.” A fourth verse, omitted in some hymnals, ends on the hopeful note that as saints and angels are bound “in holy love,” so we might also be bound to them and to one another in love and peace. In this original setting of Baker’s text, stanza 1 is sung by unison voices, stanza 2 by unison women, stanza 3 by unison men, and stanza 4 in parts following a recapitulation of the introduction and a modulation to the relative major key. ©Copyright 2024 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). In that year the song peaked on the Australian Singles Chart at number 72. But whilst its initial impact was somewhat less than stellar, it has gone on to become one of those songs that is part of the national psyche and is well-known by most Australians.In I still Call Australia Home Peter Allen wrote of his longing, no matter where in the World he might travel, to always return home to Australia, where he could be near his family and friends once again. The song is now regarded as a heart-warming expression of Australian patriotism and nostalgia for home.Its adoption by Qantas in the mid 1990s as the centrepiece of a long-running advertising campaign exposed a new generation of Australians to the song and greatly boosted its popularity. The Qantas campaign became one of the top Australian television campaigns of all time. It has linked together Australians living at home with those travelling or living overseas. Beginning with a number of well-known Australian musicians, the campaign went on to become associated with the Australian Girls Choir, the National Boys Choir and the Gondwana National Indigenous Children’s Choir.The song has featured in television programs, benefit concerts, sporting event ceremonies, and was included in the musical, The Boy From Oz, which starred Todd McKenney as Peter Allen in the Australian production and Hugh Jackman in the title role when the musical transferred to Broadway.This arrangement, with piano accompaniment, is available in SATB, SSA, SAB and 2-Part voicings.

The invocation, “Eternal God and Father, by whose power we are created and by whose love we are redeemed” acknowledges the eternity, creative power, and redeeming love of God. The petition, “Guide and strengthen us by your Spirit, that we may give ourselves to your service, and live this day in love to one another, and live this day in love to you” asks for the aid of the Holy Spirit in service to God and recalls Jesus's words in the Gospel of Matthew, 22:37-39: “And [Jesus] said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. The tune accompanying the text in this arrangement is Song 46, one of many melodies written by the English composer Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) for use with The Hymnes and Songs of the Church, published in England in 1623.
