Approx. 3:42.I first began writing a Christmas carol about the Covid-19 pandemic in March of 2020 when it seemed unfathomable that the global social distancing measures could last until Christmas. First drafts, therefore, were upbeat and whimsical. The song was completed in May 2020, however, and not only did it seem likely that lockdowns could extend not only to Christmas, but beyond – until a treatment or a vaccine could be found. Though obviously written with this contemporary situation in mind, Holding on for Christmas avoids direct references to remain a universal message of hope despite hopeless circumstances. Through its imagery of a Nativity story told wrong, of an individual facing unexplained solitude, and of enduring a winter in order to experience brighter days ahead, the song can apply to many cryptic or overt scenarios.

Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring is the most common English title of a piece of music derived from a chorale setting of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, BWV 147 (Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life), composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1723. The English version of the piece was written by the poet laureate Robert Bridges. It is not a translation of the stanzas used within Bach's original version, but is inspired by stanzas of the same hymn that Bach had drawn upon: Jesu, meiner Seelen Wonne, the lyrics of which were written in 1661 by Martin Janus (or Jahn), and which was sung to Johann Schop's 1642 Werde munter, mein Gemüte hymn tune.It is often performed slowly and reverently at wedding ceremonies, as well as during Christian festive seasons like Christmas and Easter. This arrangement is a shortened version of the piece, now slightly longer than 2 minutes -- which is perfect for wedding/Mass entrance. Although the Council of Trent had forbidden this kind of borrowing of secular melodies in masses in principle, long established customs were tolerated. Charpentier’s justly famous Messe de Minuit represents a perfect synthesis between the secular and liturgical, and between the popular and learned. Adapting the vast majority of the Latin mass to French noëls, the Messe de Minuit’s fresnhess and joyful spirit perfectly represent Advent. While Charpentier used ten different noël’s through the course of the work, the most serious moment of the mass, the statements of Christ’s incarnation, his mortal existence, and his death under Pontius Pilate, is given wholly original, appropriately sober music.

Johanna Müller-Hermann (1868-1941) was born in Vienna and after several years as a primary school teacher returned to music studying with a number of teachers including Alexander von Zemlinsky and Josef Foerster. As a composer she wrote a large number of chamber, vocal and orchestra works and enjoyed much success during her lifetime. She became a professor of music theory at the New Vienna Conservatory in 1918 and much of her music was published by Universal Edition and Musikhaus Doblinger.Die Weihe der Nacht is the first piece from Müller-Hermann’s Zwei Frauenchöre mit orchestrer, Op. 10. It sets a text by Friedrich Hebbel (1813-1863) and was first published by Universal Edition in 1915.Full score and orchestral parts also available.
