Maintaining the quirky energy, wall-of-sound approach, and signature string lines of the original, this one is sure to be lots of fun to play! Rated advanced-intermediate for a few tricky rhythms, tempo changes, and a few high notes in the violin part (up to 5th position); this won't be too difficult to put together, but will probably warrant a run-through before performing.Sarah “Cellobat” Chaffee is an in-demand acoustic & electric cellist and string arranger. You may have seen her onstage with legendary rock band Aerosmith as the cellist for their “Deuces Are Wild” residency, playing more than 50 sold-out shows with the Bad Boys from Boston; she is also the principal cellist for the Raiders House Band, playing for a crowd of 60,000 at all of the team's home games. Phil Beaman #5012669. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844679). Maggiolata is the Italian name of an ancient Spring Festival celebrated on May 1st, hence the subtitle Song of May. Jeno Hubay, Head of the Violin Dept at the Budapest Academy of Music, wrote this piece to be as light and celebratory as a perfect spring day. My arrangement abridges and slightly simplifies this classical standard which was originally written for Viola and Piano. I reduced it from 6 1/2 minutes to 2 1/2 minutes by focusing on the recapitulation of the main theme but also included opening and closing cadenzas. I have scored it for a String Octet; 1 Violin Solo, accompanied by 4 Violins, 2 Violas, 1 Cello. The one Violin has the melody throughout. The other Violins and Violas have occasional countermelody, but mostly pulse ensemble rich chords while the Cello sits on pedal tones. Overall, it creates a rich, balanced string sound. Fairly easy, but sounds more advanced with its full chords and the dramatic interpretation markings I have added.9 page score, 1 page parts; 17 pages total5 minutes with repeat

The piece was one of the stand-out cuts, receiving a wide variety of radio play, and bringing the trio’s music to new audiences. Written originally for the mandolin, it surely is one of O’Connor’s most memorable mandolin melodies. With the aid of Edgar Meyer arranging the fabulous cello and bass solo sections, the piece can be performed in a variety of instrumental settings. The mandolin part could be also covered by guitar, piano, harp or most any chordal instrument. The piece was named by a young music student at an inner-city camp for underprivileged youths. At his workshop, O’Connor performed his new piece on the mandolin and asked for the kids to help him name it. The title, Butterfly’s Day Out, helped O’Connor complete his vision for the tune. The whole experience also inspired the idea for O’Connor to start his own Fiddle Camps. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels. The piece was one of the stand-out cuts, receiving a wide variety of radio play, and bringing the trio’s music to new audiences. Written originally for the mandolin, it surely is one of O’Connor’s most memorable mandolin melodies. With the aid of Edgar Meyer arranging the fabulous cello and bass solo sections, the piece can be performed in a variety of instrumental settings. The mandolin part could be also covered by guitar, piano, harp or most any chordal instrument. The piece was named by a young music student at an inner-city camp for underprivileged youths. At his workshop, O’Connor performed his new piece on the mandolin and asked for the kids to help him name it. The title, Butterfly’s Day Out, helped O’Connor complete his vision for the tune. The whole experience also inspired the idea for O’Connor to start his own Fiddle Camps. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels.
