Written for Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello and String Bass with full score. There can be as little as one player per part or placing numerous players on each part will produce a bigger and fuller sound. Even advanced players will find these pieces fun to play. These compositions contain flowing melodies with unique harmonies, easy key signatures and have generated great audience appeal. Counterpoint is also incorporated into many of the compositions. Gaudete! is Christmas carol, believed to originate from the 16th Century. It was published widely in 1582 in the collection of sacred songs known as Piae Cantiones. Whilst the plainchant for the refrain (Gaudete) is clearly published, there is much debate as to where the melody for the verses came from. To preserve the plainchant style of the verses, each member of the quartet has a solo verse – with a few alterations made to preserve each instrument’s unique voice. An additional refrain is included to create a suitable crescendo towards the climax of the piece – highlighting the meaning of Gaudete! (Rejoice!) This version is suitable for quartets of any level, especially those who desire an easily legible and flexible arrangement, ready for a Christmas concert, carol service, or other event. The Alman was part of the dances of Renaissance Suites that later occurs in the Baroque Period. Robert Johnson was a master lutenist during the Renaissance England. The beautiful 16th Century counterpoint is ewvident in his writing. Robert Johnson was the son of John Johnson, who was lutenist to Elizabeth I. In 1594 Robert's father died, and in 1596 he joined the household of George Carey, 2nd Baron Hunsdon as an apprentice. Robert is assumed to have been around 13 at the time, as this was a typical age to begin an apprenticeship, but his date of birth is not known. Carey and his wife Elizabeth Spencer, were patrons of the lutenist and composer John Dowland, who dedicated various compositions to them.
