Sometimes fast and furious like the legendary racehorse Whirlaway, this entertaining and challenging one-movement string quartet is just as much fun for the players as it is for audiences. Replete with brief quotes from the music of Mozart, Gershwin, Joplin, Stephen Foster and others, it loosely follows the life of Whirlaway from his birth in 1938 to his untimely demise in 1953. The String Quartet no II comprises four movements: 1. Preludio, Passacaglia, Minuetto and Trio and Rondo. The first movement is fast and furious and cast in a modified sonata form - announcing two contrasting themes with a transitional section in between. The development section fulfills the role of various transformations and fragmental modifications of segmented thematic material, adding instabitily to the movement. The recapitulation is truncated, rather referential to the exposition and presented in reversed order. The second movement is a plaintive passacaglia, with a recurring eight-bar melody - in this case not traditional in nature as the bassline mostly carried the melody throughout, but nw distributed between all the string instuments. The theme is heard fourteen times. The use of textural contrast and canonic procedures add to the contrapuntal nature of the movement. The Minuetto and Tro movement is strikingly neo-tonal, and but sudden shifts of scalar centricities in the Minuetto add to suspension and elements of surprise. The Trio is more lyrical in character and fluttering fragments create dialogue between the members of the quartet. The last movement is cast in a modified Rondo form. The refrain parts are continuously presented in different textural and harmonic content. The alternating first episode draws material from the first movement and the second from the third movement, resulting in a cyclic structure of the work as a whole. The musical language is loosely based within extended tonality, with modal intersections and dissonant colours, making consonant sonoroties slightly ambiguous and unpredictable.2016 Chamber Music Contest Entry.

Howard #986178. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1402959). This Second String Quartet is in four movements, and runs to over 30 minutes long. The work uses the traditionally expected forms for each movement, as a framework or starting point for departure, but also uses a conceptual title for the work as a whole. In this case 'Locomotion', or the conveying of motion (especially with regards to train travel), was used as a compositional stimulus in creating extended pattern-based textures, as well as the development, or journey, of motifs and themes. Otherwise, there is no particular attempt to evoke the sound of particular modes of transportation, or certain landscapes or scenes. Such imagery is left at the discretion of the listener. Formally, the work begins with a loose sonata form first movement, based around E (modal minor). The second movement, on A, bears the hallmarks of a busy scherzo, while the sentimental slow movement in D minor that follows is based on ground basses, in a ternary form of two varied themes. The extended finale grows out of the previous movement, with a jig-like rondo theme on another ground bass. Contrasting episodes feature modulating material, as well as a secondary theme in C. The final section sees a cyclic return of the first movement's first theme, now at the finale's faster tempo, and in the closing key of G minor.
