String Quartet String Quartet - Digital Download SKU: A0.1031806 Composed by Liam Morrissey. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 2 pages. Liam Morrissey #3572227. Published by Liam Morrissey (A0.1031806). Between gigs on winter terraces , walks on frozen streets , chamber music rehearsals , and the recognition of the good and the bad in man and machine , my quartet was born . It came at a time of reconciliation , of a dawning acceptance of the beauty , the necessity of exploration of advancing technology in music . Before then I had trouble with the synthetic nature of contemporary music ; it seemed to me a symbol of the degradation of the importance that we give to nature in society . However , as I listened more and more to electronic music , as I rehearsed Philip Glass with my friends , I came to accept that there is a coexistence as natural and wonderful as a cup of tea . Yes , it still worries me , the level to which we have come to depend on technological advantage , and I feel we have a long way to go before we reach equilibrium .In the meantime , I wrote this piece and prepared it with completely synthetic effects in the hope of reaching that balance , at least from an aesthetic perspective . It starts somewhat coldy , a siren , a train motor , a deep respiration and a sigh . It twists , it turns , and by the end humanity and its steel and plastic progeny are one .

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1013056 Composed by Christine Southworth. 20th Century,Contemporary,World. Score and parts. 35 pages. Airplane Ears Music #5802093. Published by Airplane Ears Music (A0.1013056). Super Collider (2010, 18 minutes) Kronos Quartet and electronic gamelanComposed for Kronos Quartet & Gamelan Elektrika. Premiered at Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival, August 13, 2010 by Kronos Quartet and Gamelan Elektrika: Evan Ziporyn, kendang; Sean Mannion, kempli; Balaji Mani, ceng-ceng; Laurel Pardue & Sachi Sato, pemade; Katie Puckett & Sam Schmetterer, kantilan; Mark Buckles, Ramon Castillo, Elizabeth Johansen, Julie Strand, reong; Beth Mullins & Po-Chun Wang, pokokGamelan Elektrika is an electronic virtual gamelan designed and developed by Alex Rigopulos (founder and CEO of Harmonix Music, inventors of video games Guitar Hero and Rock Band). The piece is inspired by the Large Hadron Collider at CERN - the largest machine ever built, that's purpose is to change science forever, recreating the beginning of the universe in a tube and proving (or disproving) the theories of particle physics of the last half-century.Particle physics is the unbelievable in pursuit of the unimaginable. To pinpoint the smallest fragments of the universe you have to build the biggest machine in the world. To recreate the first millionths of a second of creation you have to focus energy on an awesome scale. - The GuardianSuper Collider will explore two obverse sound worlds and traditions, the vast culture of the string quartet juxtaposed with the ancient performance methods of a gamelan, unleashed through the unlimited sonic universe of electronics. In our own test-tube experiment, this musical moment of collision will hopefully achieve similarly unparalleled results. What does particle physics have to do with music and art? String theory, which the CERN facility hopes to verify or disprove, presumes that matter itself is the manifestation of resonant vibrations, that the world itself is a universal harmony. This post-modern notion - which Kronos embodies with every performance - itself resonates with the ancient Hindu notion of om, the absolute manifest, which is the basis of Indonesian gamelan. We will bring these two ideas of resonance together by combining Kronos with a gamelan - even a virtual one.The behavior of subatomic particles is probabilistic, group-oriented: the motion of any one particle is unpredictable and unknowable: it's what the group does that counts. This could also be a description of the Balinese gamelan, where individual virtuosity is subsumed to interlocking patterns, composite melodies, the sound of the whole. This is also the spirit of Kronos. When Robert Moog developed his synthesizer in the 1960s, he modeled its functionality on the piano and on western music in general - a single person, sitting at a keyboard. This is one reason why it was popularized by Wendy Carlos' Swtiched On Bach. Gamelan Elek Trika takes a similar approach to the very distinctive musical practices of Indonesia. Like the great gamelans of Bali and Java, Gamelan Elek Trika works as a single unit, played by a complete ensemble. The instruments are played like a gamelan - metallophones, drums, and gongs, playing interlocking patterns - but all are channeled through a central 'brain', a single processing unit which controls their sound, tuning, and timbre. The composer can thus alter the sonic environment globally, not just for one instrument at a time but for the complete ensemble.Super Collider is made possible by generous support from Alex Rigopulos and Sachi Sato, MIT, and the MIT Media Lab. Gamelan Elektrika instruments produced by Alex Rigopulos; sensors, electronics, and interface design by Andrew Boch, Matt Boch, and Laurel Pardue; technical assembly by Stéphanie Bouchard; frame design and assembly by Quentin Kelly.About the ComposerChristine Southworth (b. 1978) is a composer and video artist based in Lexington, Massachusetts, dedicated to creating music born from a cross-pollination of sonic.

String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1107440 By Nathan Evans. By Alexander Oriet, David Phelan, and Nathan Evans. Arranged by Joel Jacklich (A.S.C.A.P.). 19th Century,Folk,Multicultural,World. 12 pages. Joel Jacklich #710097. Published by Joel Jacklich (A0.1107440). New Zealand-based music teacher and folk music compiler Neil Colquhoun claimed to have collected the song around 1966 from one F. R. Woods. Woods, who was in his 80s at the time, had allegedly heard the song from his uncle. it was attributed to one D.H. Rogers. It has been speculated that Rogers was the uncle of Woods and that Rogers had worked as a teenage pirate or shore whaler in the early-to-mid 19th century, composing this and another song in his later years and eventually passing them on to his nephew as an old man. Nathan Evers recorded the work in 2021 during the COVID pandemic and it became a viral sensation with house-bound Tik-Tokers sparking a whole re-introduction of sea shanties in what was termed Shanty-Tok. This string quartet arrangement gives all instruments a chance at the melody, and adds the affectation of a foot-stomp and a shout at the ends of verses. The history of whaling in New Zealand stretches from the late eighteenth century to 1965. In 1831, the British-born Weller brothers Edward, George, and Joseph, who had emigrated to Sydney in 1829, founded a whaling station at Otakou near modern Dunedin in the South Island of New Zealand, seventeen years before Dunedin was established. The Weller brothers had on their voyage to New Zealand brought in the 'Lucy Ann' (the Weller brothers' barque) a good deal of rum and a good deal of gunpowder. From 1833, the Weller brothers sold provisions to whalers in New Zealand from their base at Otakou, which they had named Otago in approximation of the local MÄori pronunciation. The song's lyrics describe a whaling ship called the Billy o' Tea [Note: a billy is a pot in which water is boiled to make tea or coffee] and its hunt for a right whale. The song describes how the ship's crew hope for a wellerman to arrive and bring them supplies of luxuries. According to the song's listing on the website New Zealandfolk Song, the workers at these bay-whaling stations (shore whalers) were not paid wages, they were paid in slops (ready made clothing), spirits and tobacco. The chorus continues with the crew singing of their confidence that the tonguin' will be the last step of their plight. Tonguing in this context refers to the practice of cutting strips of whale blubber to render into oil. Subsequent verses detail the captain's determination to bring in the whale in question, even as time passes and the quartet of whaling boats is lost in the fight. In the last verse, the narrator conveys how the Billy o' Tea is still considered locked in an ongoing struggle with the whale, with the wellerman making his regular call to strengthen the captain and crew. 望春風 "Desire to the Spring Breeze" (Arranged for String Quartets)

String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1366465 By Jaron Khor. By Deng Yuxian. Arranged by Jaron Khor. 19th Century,Chamber,Classical,Folk,Traditional. 12 pages. Jaron Khor #950798. Published by Jaron Khor (A0.1366465). Deng Yuxian (July 21, 1906 - June 11, 1944) was a Taiwanese Hakka composer known for nearly a hundred iconic compositions, including Rainy Night Flowers, Spring Breeze, and Four Seasons Red. He is acclaimed as the Father of Taiwanese Ballads. Born in Taoyuan into a family with a rich history, Deng attended the Taipei Normal School under Japanese rule and later pursued composition studies in Japan.Upon returning to Taiwan, Deng Yuxian created numerous popular songs. In 1940, he left the music industry to become a teacher. Unfortunately, he succumbed to heart and lung disease in 1944 at the age of less than 40. Deng's musical legacy has had a profound impact on the Taiwanese music scene, leaving an indelible mark on its history.Spring Breeze, also known as Desire to the Spring Breeze, is an ancient traditional music piece with roots in a rich and old musical tradition. Known for its millennia-old melody and profound cultural significance, the song typically expresses anticipation for spring and praises the vibrant natural scenery. In this reimagined arrangement, I aimed to depart from traditional arrangement methods, incorporating rich scene paintings and vivid imagery. Each section has been crafted as a musical canvas, seeking to portray imaginative landscapes between the notes. This innovative approach challenges tradition, breathing new life into this ancient piece, making it more resonant with contemporary audiences. This arrangement is not just a reinterpretation of the music but also a tribute to tradition and an exploration of new perspectives. I hope this musical adventure guides you through the intersection of tradition and modernity, allowing Spring Breeze to blossom anew in a fresh narrative of sound, providing you with a wondrous journey for the soul.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.869118 Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Contemporary,Jazz,Latin. Score and parts. 16 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #1914305. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869118). Morango ... almost a tango (1983) is the most popular piece of music from my portfolio of over 150 works!!! It is amazing that the work was conceived thirty years ago!!! Originally, it was just a 32-bar jazz tune I performed every Sunday night with the Moon Unit at the 1369 Jazz Club in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1980-1984. The string quartet version, although written for the Kronos Quartet, was premiered at Concert X by the Composers in Red Sneakers in Sanders Theater, Cambridge, Massachusetts, on July 21, 1983. The Red Sneakers String Quartet comprised of Thal Aylward, Melissa Howe, Frank Grimes and Sandy Kiefer. Richard Buell reported in the Boston Globe a few days later that the doleful Morango ... almost a tango got a lot of mileage out of a stubborn, almost unchanging cello line and the elaborations above it. The original program note read, Last summer in Vermont I met Gustavo Moretto, an Argentine composer, who taught me the finer and more beautiful aspects of the Tango. In my modest way, as someone looking in from the outside, I created Morango ... almost a tango - a bastardized version of the 'real thing.' Morango ... is also intrinsically connected to Kate Moran, a sometimes painter ... to whom it is dedicated. The work is played con sordino throughout. I hope the sirens next door don't intrude too much. But then again, John Cage would be delighted. Eventually, the Kronos got around to performing it on tour in Europe in 1986. When they played it as an encore in Italy at the American Academy in Rome, Mya Tannenbaum of the Corriere Della Sera wrote, Non sono mancati i bis. Un richiamo al sex appeal del vecchio tango da parte di un giovane «premio Roma», Tom Lee. Soon after, back in the States, the Kronos performed it at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. John Rockwell wrote in the New York Times, ... a soulfully beautiful score by Thomas Oboe Lee. Three months later the Kronos recorded it on their Nonesuch CD, White Man Sleeps. Many other string quartets, both here and abroad, have since added the work to their repertory. The Lydian String Quartet, especially, have taken the work on their concert tours in the United States, Europe and the former Soviet Union. It appears on a CD recorded by the Lyds in Moscow on MCA Classics. As interest in the work grew, other ensembles have requested arrangements of Morango ... There are now three other versions of the work: one for big band jazz ensemble by Ken Schaphorst, another for string orchestra commissioned by Aram Gharabekian and Sinfonova, and the third for violin and piano commissioned by the Paul Chou-Paul Salerni Duo. Of the string orchestra version, Richard Dyer of the Boston Globe wrote, Lee's piece, Morango ... almost a tango, is a transcription of atmospheric and elegant music originally composed for string quartet; it is as sultry as Faith Domergue in a film noir, and it steams.
