This score is an arrangement for piano, violin I and II, viola, cello, bass with optional drums.Backstory: Years ago I wrote a simple piano piece for my students. As instrumental music can fully exist outside the confines of words, it can be difficult to find the right title for something that is pure sound and possibility. I took inspiration from the time of year in which I had composed it and stamped it, “Almost Mayâ€. Like springtime in the Northern Hemisphere, “Almost May†unfolds slowly and majestically, with ever-evolving layers for the senses to discover. What to listen for: ThemeThe main theme is first presented by the piano with minimal fanfare. This part was written to be easy enough for a child, which despite being sparing of notes, delivers rich harmonic content. Every note has been carefully curated for the optimal combination of accessibility and depth. Weaving chromatically into distantly-related keys, the melody takes small steps into contrasting musical spaces. In a wordless procession, the storyline plays out, as if the theme discovers that someone very different lives next door, and they slowly become inseparable. The piano is accompanied by an airy touch of brushes against a snare drum, like the pitter patter of soft feline steps. In the low frequency range, the upright bass supports and deepens the tonal palette with its earthy underpinnings. What to listen for: Variation I The unmistakable string section arrives like a breath of warm air. Lush, warm and reassuring like sunshine on your cheeks, the string parts begin with long tones. This broadness and stability will evolve into more layers of complexity throughout the section. While the role of the string section is background accompaniment, it undergoes textural changes which allow for some layers to briefly rise to the forefront as melody. Careful listening to the string parts will reveal an oceanic churning, a motion from background to foreground with expansions and contractions along the way. Floating overtop this density is the improvised piano solo, with ascending gestures that progress in detail and density. Each instrument enters a general unfolding and growth period in the first variation. The bass and drums include more fills than before, as the ensemble tends gradually toward more grandeur. What to listen for: Variation II The final variation opens with a decadent treatment of the melody. What was initially expressed by a soloist as a childlike plea is reimagined as a two-part conversation between the piano and lead viola. The obbligato voiced in the viola is a derivation of the melody that holds the space between phrases so the listener's attention is passed seamlessly between the piano and viola part. This dialogue features commentary on the original melody in the form of ornamentation and taking surprising pathways to expected destinations. The rhythm section (bass and drums) takes more liberties in creating a verdant soundscape as the ensemble rises to a final climax. Credits: I would like to thank Cole Canaday for the nuance, imagination and depth of understanding with which he brought this piece to life. However, as it was originally written for solo violin, due to the technical difficulties playing it, the melody is often not fully appreciated. Besides, due to the nature of the violin, the accompaniment may sound a little jerky when played on solo violin. This arrangement allows the 1st Violin to fully express the beauty of the melody, with the support of the quartet. It can be performed in a String Quartet. Also, music students may play together to appreciate the different parts of the music, and appreciate the genius of JS Bach in reducing it for 1 violin. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.1156755). I have been a fan of the music by Heitor Villa-Lobos since my teenage years in São Paulo, Brazil, 1959-66. It was there when I first first heard his Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, with soprano solo and eight cellos. The memory of that music will forever haunt me. I then recently discovered through a CD box set recorded by the Cuarteto Latinoamericano that Villa-Lobos wrote 17 string quartets. I guess he wanted to beat the number of string quartets that Beethoven wrote which is 16. So this being my 17th string quartet I wanted to pay homage to Villa-Lobos and dedicate this work to him, in memoriam. I took his first string quartet as a model, in terms of the titles he gave to the movements of that work. I. Cantilena … Andante II. Brincadeira … Allegretto scherzando III. Canto lÃrico … Moderato IV. Cançoneta … Andantino quasi allegretto V. Saltando como um Saci … Presto VI. In 2021 I dedicated SQ15 to Dmitri Shostakovich because ... he wrote fifteen string quartets.  Then I dedicated SQ17 to Heitor Villa-Lobos because he wrote seventeen.  What happened to SQ16?  We all know that Beethoven wrote sixteen string quartets.  But, I am not a fan of his work in general, and I did not find anything inspiring among his string quartets.  So, instead I dedicated SQ16 ... In an interview with his son Giles (see Youtube link), Martin indicated that he and McCartney made several changes to the original. For example, McCartney added the following: M35 the Cello run to Eb; M44-M48 the high A on Violin I. When isolating the string section by soloing the left channel of the original recording, one can clearly hear several additional changes, such as the addition of double stops and inversions throughout the song. For example, Violin I goes to E in M11; Violin I & II hold the 3rd note of the harmony in M37. The end result of these changes is a masterpiece that undoubtedly one of the most successful recordings of all time.

The vigorous pizzicato opens up the first movement of this piece, imitates the traditional Chinese Gong-and-Drum rhythmic patterns. The cello solo main theme flows in later and develop the music to the following sections. The second movement is inspired from the concept of poetry reading. It is the most intensive section and holds the greatest contrast of this piece. The third movement combines elements from the earlier movments and leads to the fourth movement, Lebendiges Finale. The musical ideas between these four movments of the composition are strongly revelent to each other. The musical content in a composition sets up the style for itself. Even under some restrictions of tradional musical forms, the composer tried to develop few new compositional ideas in order to achieve a new sphere of string quartet with this piece. String Quartet was commissioned by the Council for Cultural Affairs, finished in 1983, premiered on 4th of January 1985 in the National Taiwan University Student Activity Center. It was programed in the event A Night of Shui-Long Ma’s Chamber Music, held by Asian Composers’ League-Taiwan Section and NTU-Philharmonic Club. The premiered musicians were: Wei-Chung Chiang (Violin I), Chin-Kuei Hong (Violin II), Ming-Li Wu (Viola) and Wan-Ling Sun (Cello). The first edition of the score was published in 1987, and the second edition published in 2016.
