Good King Wenceslas is a well-known Christmas carol that narrates the story of a kind-hearted ruler who braves winter weather to help a poor peasant. The carol is inspired by the historical figure of Saint Wenceslas I, Duke of Bohemia, who lived from approximately 907 to 935 AD. Although he is referred to as a king in the carol, he was a duke during his lifetime; the title of king was conferred upon him posthumously by Holy Roman Emperor Otto I.Historical ContextWenceslas was born into a Christian family and raised primarily by his grandmother, Ludmila, who significantly influenced his faith. His mother, Drahomíra, was aligned with paganism and ultimately had Ludmila murdered to gain power. Upon becoming Duke at 18, Wenceslas sought to promote Christianity and was known for his charitable acts, especially towards the poor and marginalized. His reign was marked by efforts to end religious conflicts and to build churches, including part of what is now St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. However, his commitment to Christianity and his benevolent nature made him a target for his jealous younger brother, Boleslav, who ultimately conspired to murder him in 929 or 935 AD.The CarolThe carol Good King Wenceslas was written in 1853 by English hymn-writer John Mason Neale, set to a melody from a 13th-century spring carol. It was designed to encourage Christian charity, particularly during Christmas, and is traditionally sung on the Feast of Stephen, December 26. The lyrics depict Wenceslas and his page witnessing a poor man gathering firewood and deciding to help him by bringing food and supplies. This story reflects the historical Wenceslas's reputation for generosity and compassion, which has led to his veneration as a saint and the patron saint of the Czech Republic. Published by Colin Bayliss (A0.938424). The work was completed on February 2nd 1970 and is the first piece to be retained by the composer after he had destroyed all his earlier compositions. The parts are available as a separate download. The following is taken from the catalogue of the composer's works:- The photocopy of the MS is marked String Quartet No. 1, but is not regarded by the composer as part of his mature string quartet writing. The MS itself was lost in a fire at the home of Col. Robert Tong, formerly Registrar of Queen Mary College, University of London. A typesetting was made in November 2000 as the photocopy had faded so badly. The composer's sketch books suggest that the movements were written in the order 3,2,4,1. 1. Allegro 2. Scherzo (Allegro energico) Trio I - tempo di menuetto Trio II - no tempo indicated - [andante] 3. Andante con moto 4. Allegro ma non troppo Composer's note:- As the above suggests, I originally had no intention of publishing this early piece. The recording by the Lochrian String Quartet of the six numbered quartets, however , together with sleeve notes admitting the existence of this work, prompted me into revising my opinion and allowing its publication, so that anyone wishing to study this first effort may do so. It shows certain traits that I was to develop in the six quartets and others that I was to discard, and therefore is of musicological interest. It also has a few good, albeit imitative, tunes! Duration: Approx. 25 mins. COLIN BAYLISS was born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire in 1948. His life-long love of music led him to compose from an early age and he now has a catalogue of over a hundred works including two operas, four symphonies, six string quartets and many other pieces for most instrumental and chamber groupings, over seventy of them published. He is a member of the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters, the North West Composers' Association and the Performing Rights Society. As well as writing music himself, he has also compiled annotated catalogues of the works of Anthony Hedges and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. CDs of his piano music played by David Martin and complete organ music played by Ronald Frost are available on the New Century Classics label. I have been a huge admirer of Federico Mompou since my first encounter with his Música Callada on the ECM label with pianist Herbert Henck. Years later I found an album of the same work with Jenny Lin on the Steinway & Sons label. I was so impressed with her work on the Mompou that I hired her to record my Twenty-nine Fireflies for solo piano (1977-2002). I have subsequently hired her to record other solo piano works of mine: For Morton Feldman (2017), Préludes ... Hommage à C.D. (2020), Via Crucis ... Hommage à Franz Liszt (2020) and Huit Épigraphes (2021). So when it came time to write my 16th string quartet, I decided that Beethoven wasn't as inspiring as Shostakovich was when I wrote SQ15 ... Hommage à DSCH (2021). So, instead I thought maybe I should write a tribute to Mompou for my 16th string quartet.  SQ16 ... Música Callada (2022) is in 6 movements. 1. Adagio - Moderato 2. Adagio - Moderato 3. Presto - TRIO 4. Adagio 5. Allegro - TRIO 6. Largo NB: The entire work is played muted, con sordino.
