Nigel Williams #5041009. Published by Nigel Williams (A0.763345). This popular and much loved hymn Amazing Grace, is arranged to the American melody 'New Britain' for string quartet. The 1st violin states the melody, accompanied by the other instruments. The first variation beginning at measure 21 sees the melody in the cello and viola, with a slower tempo allowing the upward moving 1st and 2nd violin figures to provide a gentle and moving accompaniment. The 2nd variation has the melody in the 2nd violin with the cello embarking on an energetic 'walking bass' accompaniment. In the concluding section the tempo and dynamic drop back for the final cadence. This arrangement is suitable in a church service at anytime during the year and especially during the Easter season. This is also ideal repertoire for High School and College String Quartets. The performance duration is over three minutes and the full score has four individual parts attached. Included with the quartet score & parts is a slash/chord lead sheet if you wish to perform this with along with guitar, piano or full band.The form follows Hillsong's live version all the way through Chorus 3. It does not include the recap/vamp of the bridge and 4th chorus, but you can loop back on the chart from letter G to letter E if your performance requires a longer rendition. It reached number one in both British and USA charts, and the top ten in many countries across the world.I really loved arranging this for string quartet and hope that it will give you pleasure to play. I have placed this piece within the Advanced category. In rehearsal with Capriccio Quartet and we tried it various tempi between70 and 84 bpm. Provided the energy is present in the playing it sounds just as good at a slower speed!Younger players could also tackle this song, which is in an easy key for strings. Although some of the rhythmic patterns appear difficult on the page, the key is to listen to the song and to do them by ear. There is not a lot of syncopation, and the on-beat semi quavers sound wonderful on strings. If they are played vigorously, with all the staccato and accents in the score, you can get away with a much slower speed altogether. As usual, the bowing is just a guide and the double stopping always includes an open string. On the rare occasion that the double stopping includes two notes without the open string, choose one of them that is not doubled in one of the other parts.Where there is a dynamic ‘p’ it is important to observe it. There are some very dissonant harmonies in this piece. Playing them loudly will sound a bit odd, but I tried leaving them out and the result was a drop in tension. The Angel Gabriel, Coventry Carol, O Come Emmanuelhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCM1oh2jWA0 I have always enjoyed singing carols in minor keys, and when it comes to arranging, love the harmonic possibilities, especially for false relations. I have arranged three so far, and if you buy them as a bundle, the third one is discounted. You can watch the Youtube of The Angel Gabriel here, but you can also find the others by typing Helen Marple-Horvat, Songwriter, Arranger and Composer into Youtube, or research them on the Sheet Music Plus Site. In my arrangement of ‘Angel Gabriel’ I have included various harmonisations of the wonderful tune, and a short contrapuntal development section in the middle to add some interest. In both ‘Coventry Carol’ and ‘O Come Emmanuel’ there are a few surprises in the counting so watch out! It isn’t always obvious, but with a few rehearsals, will give you a fresh takes on these very old carols. Capriccio Quartet are professionals, and play in higher positions with few open strings, lots of vibrato and slurred bows. That would be fine for Grade 5 players and above. However, I don’t want younger players to feel daunted! All three carols are in good keys for strings, with the double stopping always including an open string. They can also use open strings freely without detracting from this ancient style, or try one note per bow, dropping the first violin down an octave. The recording of Coventry Carol is at a very fast pace which shows off the rhythmic drive of the arrangement. I also love it much slower so that the intense dissonance can be brought out.There are two short excerpts from Coventry Carol and O Come Emmanuel, but full recordings are available to view on the single titles on the Sheet Music Plus Catalogue Index under my name.
