The famous Corta-jaca, the name with which the Gaucho tango became popular, is one of the most recorded and known songs by Chiquinha Gonzaga, alongside Ó abre alas, Lua Branca and Atraente. He was born on the stages of musical theaters, where he was danced in the final scene of the burlesque operetta of national customs Zizinha Maxixe, imitated from French by an anonymous author, performed at Teatro Éden Lavradio, in August 1895. Actor Machado Careca (José Machado Pinheiro e Costa ), anonymous author of the play, ended up putting verses in Corta-jaca's music, helping to popularize it, especially after its version was recorded on disk by the duo Os Geraldos. Throughout history, Corta-jaca attended other stages and repertoires: coffee-singers, beer-beauties, choro circles… But it was at the Palácio do Catete, in 1914, that it reached its glory. Performed on the guitar by First Lady Nair de Teffé, it caused political scandal and ended up calling the administration Hermes da Fonseca. The reaction can be measured by the impassioned speech that Senator Rui Barbosa delivered from the gallery. When inquiring what the cut-jaca that he had heard so much about is, he concludes: “The lowest, the most foul, the rudest of all wild dances, the twin sister of batuque, cateretê and samba. But at presidential receptions, the cut-jaca is performed with all the honors of Wagner's music, and we don't want the conscience of this country to revolt, our faces redden and the youth to laugh!†Never before in the history of Brazil has eminently popular music been performed in the seat of government, in front of the diplomatic corps and the country's elite. Corta-jaca became a classic of the great repertoire of Brazilian instrumental music, deserving recordings, among others, by Abel Ferreira, Altamiro Carrilho, Antonio Adolfo, Artur Moreira Lima, Clara Sverner, Conjunto Regional do Donga, Eudóxia de Barros, Guio de Morais, Itamar Assieré, Leandro Braga, Marcus Viana, Maria Teresa Madeira, Marcelo Verzoni, Paulo Moura, Radamés Gnatalli, Rosária Gatti, Talitha Peres, TurÃbio Santos, numerous bands and some sung versions. It was also written by the conductor for singing and piano and for a small orchestra: oboe, viola, timpani, horns (fá), bassoon. Edinha Diniz, 2011.

Deep Purple by Peter De Rose and Mitchell Parish is here arranged for string quartet by Joel Jacklich (ASCAP). Deep Purple was published in 1933 as a piano composition. The following year, Paul Whiteman had it scored for his suave big band orchestra that was making a lady out of jazz in Whiteman's phrase. Deep Purple became so popular in sheet music sales that Mitchell Parish added lyrics in 1938. The Lieder for voice and piano by Felix Mendelssohn, while of high quality, have mostly been overshadowed by those of his contemporary and friend Robert Schumann. But his Lieder ohne Worte (Songs Without Words) for piano solo with no vocal text, were and remain immensely popular, and had a great influence on his fellow composers, creating a genre of short poetic pieces for piano accessible to skilled amateurs and students as well as professionals.This set of four arrangements for string quartet begins with the best known and most loved of his vocal songs, Auf Flügeln des Gesanges (On Wings of Song), a setting of a poem by Heinrich Heine. Following are two Songs Without Words, a fine untitled one in G Major, and the famous Frühlingslied (Spring Song).In between them is a piece by his older sister, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, an accomplished composer with a catalog of over 450 works, some of which were originally published under Felix’s name. Like Felix, she wrote Lieder both with a sung text, and with no words, which she called Lieder für das Pianoforte. This little jewel is one of the latter, from her Opus 8. She gave it the title Lied (Lenau), a reference to the poet Nikolaus Lenau (1802-1850). But with neither sung text nor poem title indicated, it is a little mysterious. A gentle sinuous melody leads to some bold modulations before returning, not in the expected tonic key but on the dominant. Only in the last few bars does it resolve to the home key. The arrangement transposes the original D-Flat Major to D Major, which lies better for strings. She proceeded to tell me that she saw the socks dancing around in a dryer. A great arrangement for your next performance, sure to be a big hit with your audience!Its original title was Tico-Tico no farelo (sparrow in the bran), but since Brazilian guitarist Américo Jacomino Canhoto (1889–1928) had a work with the same title, Abreu's work was given its present name in 1931, and sometime afterward Aloysio de Oliveira wrote the original Portuguese lyrics.Eros Volusia and her dancers dance to Tico-Tico in 1942 Rio Rita. Ethel Smith performed Tico-Tico onscreen in Bathing Beauty (1944). Yoel Epstein #4285845. Published by Yoel Epstein (A0.773330). These six songs have become icons of remembrance of the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust. They are traditionally played on Holocaust Day, which is on the 28th day of the Hebrew month of Nissan in Israel, or January 27th in the rest of the world. Unter Dyne Vyse Shteren (Under the Starry Sky) was written by Avraham Sutskover, a leading Yiddish poet, while trapped in the ghetto of Vilna, in July 1943. Days before the ghetto was destroyed and all the Jews murdered, Sutskover escaped to the forest with his wife. He reached Russia, and in 1947 moved to Palestine. He died in Israel in 2010 at the age of 96. The poem was set to music by Avraham Brodna, a simple laborer in the Vilna ghetto who died in a concentration camp. Ani Maamin (I Believe): The words to this simple song are of the Jewish prayer I believe with perfect faith in the coming of the Messiah. The tune is attributed to Azriel David Festig, a leading Warsaw hazzan (cantor) who died in the Holocaust. The song was performed after the war by Rabbi Shaul Yedidia Eliezer Taub, the Admor (Rabbinical leader) of the Modzitz Hassidic sect, and has become the iconic song of the remembrance in the Hassidic community. Shtiller Shtiller (Hush Hush) was written by Alexander Volkovitzky, then a 12-year-old boy, in the Vilna Ghetto in the spring of 1943. Volkovitzky, who wrote the melody for a song contest organized to encourage the cultural life of the ghetto, eventually came to Israel where he (under the name Alexander Tamir) became a leading pianist and music educator. The words are by Shmerke Kacserginsky, a leading poet of Vilna, who later escaped the Holocaust and migrated to South America. Papirossen (Cigarettes) actually predates the Holocaust by 15 years. It was written by Yiddish actor and composer Herman Yablokoff in 1922 in Grodno, Poland. Yablokoff later immigrated to America, where he produced a musical Papirossen that incorporated the song. It was later made famous by the Barry Sisters, a Yiddish popular music group. Donna Donna was written by Shalom Secunda, with words by Aaron Zeitlin for the Yiddish musical Esterke in 1940. Though the song originally related to the 600-year-old legend of a Polish king who married a Jewess, it quickly became associated with the Holocaust because of its haunting message. The song has entered the popular folk repertoire, with canonical renditions by Joan Baez, Theodore Bikel, and many others. Hatikva (the Hope) is Israel's national anthem. The words are by Naftali Zvi Imber, and the tune is a traditional eastern European tune. You are welcome to try some of my other arrangements.
